Tip the World Over on Its Side... October 16, 2007 3:15 PM   Subscribe

So I'm reading this, and I'm thinking it makes a pretty good prelude to a Los Angeles Meetup.

Maybe we're the greatest city in the world, and maybe we're not. Either way, there are more than a couple of people who love this town, and I'd like to meet some of them. This would be my first Metafilter gathering, so if any of you have more experience with the planning of these sorts of things, I'd appreciate the help.

No, no. We are.

Also, count me in. I've been to 3 - one was in Glendale, one was in Sherman Oaks & one was in mid-wilshire. I live on the westside, but I'll happily travel. Weekends or weeknights are fine.

I keep hoping there'll be an LA meetup I can crash and bring all my Santa Cruz real ultimate power. I'm down in Ventura a lot (moving there soon, too.)

Pick yer date.

Yeah, dude that proposes the meetup proposes the date for the meetup. That's the rule!
posted by jonson at 3:30 PM on October 16, 2007

How does November 17th sound? If we do it on the Westside, then I can totally pretend that it's out of mercy for Jonson, who's been forced to travel to all of the others (and who should get some sort of reward for crafting the post that spawned this thing), and not out of my own selfish desires to keep things within stumbling-home distance for myself.

Ok, so let's talk locations. My possible suggestions:

The Arsenal: Bar at the corner of Pico and Bundy. It tends to get a bit on the noisy/crowded side, but the food is tasty (if a tad overpriced) and they pour heavy. Lawdy, do they ever pour heavy.

Bossa Nova: It's on Hollywood. It's delicious. The wait is sometimes a pain in the ass.

Cha Cha Chicken: It's tasty, it's on the beach, and they don't mind if you bring your own booze. In Santa Monica.

Harvelle's: Jazz club on 4th in Santa Monica. I always complain that its cover is ridiculous and the service is slow, but somehow I always find myself having a good time when I go there.

Merkato: Etheopian food on Fairfax (in Little Etheopia, appropriately enough).

Any other suggestions?

Someplace without a cover. Please?

The Edison, a bar built in an abandoned power plant in the basement of a downtown highrise is huge & accomodating to decent size groups. Plus it's FUCKING AWESOME.
posted by jonson at 4:48 PM on October 16, 2007

Oh, and no cover. But the drinks may be a tad pricey, to which I say: don't drink so much, or maybe just drink more before & after you go there.

Seconding jonson's idea just because the pictures are winning me over.
posted by katillathehun at 4:49 PM on October 16, 2007

Jonson's idea does seem good. Also, Carsonb, Harvelle's is the only place on the list that I gave that has a cover charge. Frankly, I'm with you on that one; I oppose the idea of paying to get into a place when I'm going to later pay ridiculous prices for booze and food.

Huh. I was actually thinking about going to the Troubador to see the Warlocks play on the 17th, so I might be in town. I'll watch for developments.

Wow. I haven't been to Harvelle's in YEARS. Forgot it existed. However, after looking at jonson's link... I vote The Edison. And I can almost swear I'll make it this time. I'm between projects.

The Edison looks very cool and I will be there if that's the place to be. My only beef is "We will always strive to more quickly accommodate those who achieve the highest understanding of our dress code." (from their website) Whatever, I can clean up OK.

Parasite Unseen, I wasn't getting down on your choices—I'm too new here to have even heard of any of those places let alone harbor opinions about them. I'm sure they're all fine establishments and more than qualified to host a gathering such as we propose. I'm just poor like dirt is all. ...And a one-drink drunk, so it evens out in the end.

Calm down about the "dress code," folks. I've been there in a non-buttoned up shirt & cheap shoes & it was no problem. They're just trying to avoid the torn jeans/tanktops/super low dress standards in place everywhere else in L.A.

BTW loq, it was odd to see you posting anti-los angeles stuff in the other thread, but then I remembered that you're crazy and you say crazy things, and it made sense.

Wait, so I just went to their website; couple three complaints.

First, I don't trust anywhere that has a webpage that takes that goddamned long to load. Fuck your flash bullshit.

Second, I thought we said WEST side. The Edison's in, like, the armpit of the 10 and 110.

Third, no, the dress code is assy and presented in an assy way.

So, I'm going to vote against The Edison. If everyone else is already het up about going there, I'll likely demure, but Christ, there's gotta be somewhere else.

I'm still kind of leaning towards the Edison, but if it's decided that we want to go someplace a bit more laid-back (and, as klangklangston mentioned, in the Westside), we could try Busby's in Santa Monica. I've never been there, but I've heard it mentioned favorably by people whose opinions I generally trust.

Is anyone else really enjoying the irony of a meetup inspired by a "you can do whatever you want in LA!!!!" thread taking place at a bar with a restrictive, pretentiously expressed dress code?
posted by speicus at 5:42 PM on October 21, 2007

Not really. When you can usually wear whatever crap you want, anywhere you want, for whatever event you want, it's a sign of respect to your fellow Mefites to take a little care for a meetup. Plus it is nice to have a reason to dress up a little once in a while.

It's not like we're talking about wearing top hat and tails, here. The dress code is like "don't show up in flip flops, shorts, and a tank top."

If not being able to wear flip flops, ripped jeans, and a t-shirt is a big hassle I'm not sure what to say...
posted by Justinian at 6:28 PM on October 21, 2007

I actually never wear jeans or flip-flips, and don't mind wearing collared shirts. I just thought the juxtaposition was funny, and if that's lost on you I'm not sure what to say...

I don't know kids, but last I visited the Edison, it quickly became a velvet rope type establishment early in the evening. And on a Saturday in LA, with all your ugly mugs, it could be a recipe for disaster. No offense to the cosmetically challenged, silicone-free and caped LARPers in the crowd, but I'd personally consider some place a little more chill... Or at least go on an off night.
posted by drpynchon at 7:23 AM on October 29, 2007

Depending on the venue, I'll tentatively sign up.

I've been to the edison and it was indeed stunning, but not a good place for a meetup. Not a lot of places to sit down, loud-ass music and a big velvet rope outside.
posted by milinar at 6:43 PM on October 29, 2007

Now I'm totally confused. Is this happening at the Edison, or not? The crowd seems about 50/50 split on between those who are coming JUST BECAUSE it's at the Edison, and those who will definitely not attend if it's at the Edison. If I were smarter, I would make a science joke about Thomas Edison & polarization, and you would all be impressed by my wit :(
posted by jonson at 11:07 PM on October 30, 2007

Velvet rope? No go. There are already too many reminders in my life that I'm not one of the pretty people.
jonson, will The Edison present me with a velvet rope situation on a Sunday night? Will there be loud music? A place to sit? Because $9 drinks in a collard shirt is one thing and I can handle that at a cool place, but add in ropes and that really dumb service aspect of their dress code plus what now sounds like a dance club atmosphere and it's too much trouble.

November 17th is a Saturday night, carsonb, not a Sunday night. And I've only been there once, but it was extremely low key at the time (Thursday night, 10:00 PM), so it's hard to say what it's like on a different night at a different time...

OK, so hey—klang and ebk, any ideas for an alternative location? I'm new in town and the only bar I know is the Roost, which has been done I believe. It's also east past the 5. I still want to meet MetaFilter, but I don't think a trendy club on a Saturday night is the best option for everyone. So let's keep the 17th, and look for a more amenable location. Without a velvet rope.
posted by carsonb at 6:34 AM on November 8, 2007

Yeah, the velvet rope aspect of the Edison is making it seem sub-optimal as a meet-up spot. I don't mind dressing up, but if getting in is any sort of hassle I'd rather find someplace where we can spend our time meeting one another instead of waiting around.

There is a parking lot in back for those of you who won't be stumbling home and the place sells tasteycakes. For god's sake, what more is needed? Sure the cheesesteaks aren't really authentic. I'll go for an hour or so, depending on how much work I get done during the day. My liver's still metabolizing all the booze I drank at the SF meetup and I have gigs the next day, so it won't be a late night if I have to drive to and from Westwood from Los Feliz.

I tried posting a reminder, but it got deleted due to this thread still being open. Here's hoping people wade through this one to get to the actual time and place.

I like Tastykakes, and I like this meetup.

I will venture out tonight if I get back from a friends place in time. If you see a guy in a red sweatshirt looking confused and not sure where he's supposed to go, that might be me.

A'ight. I will TRY and make it. I can't stay too long as I'm probably going to Bar Sinister a little later - so if you see a redhead in fishnets and heels, looking woefully out of place... I don't know WHO that is. She might tell you she's me, but don't believe her.

Well, never mind. My only gothy friend in this city tells me I shouldn't go to Bar Sinister by my lonesome, so that means I will definitely be at the meetup AND in sensible clothing.

This was lots of fun! DaShiv made an unexpected appearance, so I trust that fabulous photos will be forthcoming. In attendance were DaShiv, mandymanwasregistered, epimorph, klangklangston and holyrood, katillathehun, and derek. And tastykakes. Yummy, delicious peanut butter tastykakes.

Good seeing everyone!

I was really hoping to make this, but something came up and I was stuck at home. Glad to hear y'all had a good time with the Tastykakes.

Crap. I had a sick kid and I'm knee deep in moving boxes. I wish I could have made it.

I just got back in town from my film shoot. I'm so sorry I couldn't make it. I'm glad you all had a great time. Hopefully I'll be there next time!

So glad I got to meet you'se guys! It was fun. Those of you who didn't show? You missed out. There was table dancing, some stripping, a loooot of confessing. I just had an iced tea, so I'm probably the only reliable witness. Yeah. That, uh... that about covers it.

Sadly I showed up about an hour and change late, so I missed the stripping, but I did have a great time. And I must correct myself, it's not a red sweatshirt, it's maroon.

New MeFi contacts! YEA!!!

I didn't think I needed to point this out, but you just can't say "stripping" and "DaShiv showed up" in a thread and then not post the evidence.

FUCKING PICTURES NOW, PEOPLE.

Heaven help me when dhammond finds out I'm a damned, dirty liar.
