Denver Mefis! Go! Go! Go! November 6, 2007 8:31 AM   Subscribe

November Denver Meet-Up is a Go! Put November 17th on your calendar...

Initial planning took place in this thread, and after hemming and hawing, lonefrontranger and I decided to make 11/17 the date. So, on to the plan...

Let's do Falling Rock Taphouse again since people like it, there's good beer, it's central, and we know how to find it (1919 Blake Street, google map); we usually start showing up around 7-ish and the goal is to take over the squashy chairs inside and to the left as you walk in the door.

That's the plan - we hope to see some of you there!

Sounds good. We'll see what we can do.

Aww, damn. I don't get back to CO for a couple weeks after. Sounds like fun, too.

Awesomeness. Way to pull the trigger Jazon and LFR.

I sent an email to our old bulk email list with some additions from these threads. Let's hope some respond here. Either way don't let me pour a beer for -t after I've had ten or so myself -- shaky hands make a lousy pour. I'm looking forward to seeing all ya'll.

rats. i can't decide if mathowie and jessamyn have some grudge against Denver or we just have really crappy timing. This will be the second time in a row we've posted meetup stuff only to have it scroll off the front page in >24 hours due to "features spamming" on the part of the mods =P

FAIL, I meant "less than" 24 hours, ugh.

I can't be there, I'll be in Ft. Collins at a piano bar party. I will be drinking quite a bit, just not with MeFi folk. Next time! Have a fun time...

I plan to be there!

I'll be there. I miss the Portland mefis so it'll be extra cool to meet some Denverites.

I'm sort of having a dilemma. I had planned on bringing the SO with me, although she does not know it yet.

The problem is, I'm completely having a Costanza "when worlds collide" moment. Is real life and and the online world ever really suppose to meet. If relationship -t and independent -t meet, will I cease to exist?

I'm kidding. Sort of.

P.S. I want to go to the Rome meet-up now as well.

P.P.S. Hey, and what about Lawrence KS, that isn't too far away.

Ah well, working during yet another meetup. Enjoy yourselves!

aw, -t we'd LOVE to meet her!

besides, you guys have all met my guy :)

Well it sounds like Eekacat won't be there -t so we have a seat to fill;) Please do bring your SO. We'll be nice.

Hi. I hope Paula and I (people call me Gregg) can make it although I haven't asked her yet. She is sensibly unconscious right now, where I hope to be in fifteen minutes.

Last time was downright friendly and fun. Words which are bled of their true meaning on the Internet, not to get all Thoreauvian on your ass.

Yours truly,

kozad

-t, I may have to bring SO also. I get in Denver today (Friday) after nearly 4 weeks away from her. So I'm not sure I can get a night off so soon without... consequences.

Or maybe I'll come alone for a shorter period and not get quite as trolleyed as ususal.

Yo Nails: I hope your flight is/was pleasant and uneventful. I told Miss Regina you used to live in Rome, so your going to have to tell a story or two. After the ugly baby jokes (you do have more, right‽).

See everyone (that includes you yodelingisfun) tomorrow (except Eekacat & dr. fresh who are secretly running off and doing something that is... secret... and involves, uh... running off).

As it turns out, I'm not going to be able to make it. I hope there's another meetup soon. Perhaps I can organize one in Boulder.
posted by lukemeister at 2:39 PM on November 17, 2007

Sorry I couldn't make it, I had totally spaced that my old room-mate from Portland was flying in today. We're going to the clock tower cabaret though if anyone is still out and about....
posted by yodelingisfun at 8:42 PM on November 17, 2007

it's quite all right yodelingisfun, although you missed a good one. Denver MeFites are amazing, and amazingly adaptable!

don't forget to ask us about the sofa anarchy...

anyhow, da boyz (well koeselitz in particular) were making noise about doing a meetup SOONER not LATER and in Boulder this time. So, looks like chances are good to do another one before Xmas, even.

This time we're just gonna fire one off and whoever can make it, makes it :) I think this should be our modus operandi from here on.

Marginal quality phone-cam photos are on Vox.

Unfortunately I didn't get everyone. I really should of moved around a bit. _Please_ let me know if I got anyone's name wrong (I have an notoriously bad memory). Also, I didn't catch Scott or Jessica's screen name.

It was great seeing/meeting everyone!

lukemeister, let us know when to head to Boulder.

P.S. My god, that joke. I think I fell asleep in the middle of it. :p

Oops. I guess I don't keep up enough on how things work around here.

Anyway, great meetup, everybody. You guys are a lot of fun. Boulder should happen soon. Name a place and time.

I thought the Sundowner would be fun, but I don't know if that would really fit us very well.

I am Scott. Jessica is sheddica. This morning I read that Denver is the "most dangerous drunk city." Way to maintain our #1 status, koeselitz!
posted by scottreynen at 7:03 PM on November 19, 2007

scottreynan, I saw that Denver Post article too!

hm, the Sundowner... as far as I can recall, it can get pretty crowded.

I will do some research. I'm not totally against the Sundowner, mind you, it's just that we may want to look for other options.

How about showing up early and just taking over part of the community table at Southern Sun? There's good beer there!
posted by lonefrontranger at 10:55 PM on November 19, 2007

Actually, the article used statistics like 'deaths from liver disease' and 'drunk-driving arrests'. These statistics argue more that Denver has medical facilities that specialize in liver treatment and that Denver cops and, especially, other drivers with cell phones, are singularly intolerant of drunk drivers.

That's a great idea, lonefrontranger; it's crazy, because I was just thinking the same thing. Except I was thinking of Mountain Sun, the main downtown location. I've never been to Southern Sun; how's the atmostphere?

I've always loved Mountain Sun. I've never seen a cleaner den of hippies.

scottyren: Way to maintain our #1 status, koeselitz!

My shame grows by the day.

koeselitz, I'm actually more in favour of the Mountain Sun than the Southern if only because I'm a lazy prat and MS is much easier for me to get to from my house (i.e. not way out on the far end of South Boulder / South Broadway).

The reason I recommended it is simple: it's a much larger place.

The vibe is a little more with the college students, less with the clean hippies. The challenge with Mountain Sun is that if you don't get there by like, 5PM (or earlier) you will never, ever get a seat for a party of more than 5 on any given weekend while CU is in session. And by never, ever, I mean it is UNPOSSIBLE.

That said, I really do like Mountain Sun veryverymuch.

One little foible I should mention to all those planning to join in with the clean-hippie-stalking: neither Mountain Sun nor Southern Sun takes any form of plastic. They're a strictly cash-only operative. Which shouldn't be a problem in our case, but I'm just saying.

ok I"m off to bed!
posted by lonefrontranger at 9:47 PM on November 20, 2007

hm, maybe I should have gone to bed sooner... up there where I said "it" in the 2nd paragraph, I was referring to Southern Sun. It's a bigger place, and it's a bit more sports-bar-ish.

There's also the upstairs/mezzanine at BJ's Pizza on the Pearl St. Mall. Which also has excellent beer. And I believe can be reserved.
posted by lonefrontranger at 9:52 PM on November 20, 2007

I have had very good times at the Southern Sun and I recollect that it is much larger than the Mountain Sun (to piggyback on LFRs recommendation if I am interpreting it correctly). That said I would try my damndest to make it to any Sun that MeFites would choose to have a meetup at. Of course, my car was jacked last night....so I will be relying on the transportation of RTD. Oh, and I like hippies-- a little too much if truth be told.
posted by fieldtrip at 11:36 PM on November 20, 2007

Just my car was jacked last night...

Sorry to hear that mate. I can drive to Boulder... unless you figure out good public transport routes -- obviously I would much rather be drinkin'.
posted by NailsTheCat at 4:55 AM on November 21, 2007

I was at Southern Sun last night, got there around 8:15 and the place was packed. Including the sofa area that LFR mentioned. We had a 15-20 minute wait for our table for two, but they did give us free beer to try while we waited, and then took a beer order as we waited some more. I wonder how those sofa seats are procured on a weekend. Their sun-dried tomato soup is rather rather good.

I guess I'm telling a story rather than making a recommendation or suggestion. :)

Agreed. The weird-ass "reserve a table at the bar and wait" crap is silly and tiresome with so very few tables and so many hippies. Southern Sun sounds awesome. And also better geographically. One of us might get there early.
posted by koeselitz at 12:27 PM on November 21, 2007

okay lets not plate-of-beans this one. Southern Sun it is. they have couches but I dunno if one may reserve that section. I believe it's their waiting lounge for overflow for when they're waiting to seat people. I can find out tho.

The only day that's bad for me over the next couple of weeks is 8th December.

koeselitz, the ball's in your court, dude.
