Thanksgiving jive turkey festival November 13, 2007 5:19 PM   Subscribe

Portland, OR MeFites: Far from home this Thanksgiving? Us too. Please attend our Orphan's Thanksgiving dinner/short film festival!

When: Thanksgiving Day, 11/22, 5:00 pm.
Where: Our house (me and sleepy pete).
Who: So far, me and sleepy pete. Also cmonkey, cortex, and secretariat.
Menu: Big damn turkey and tofurkey (aka "jive turkey").
You bring: A side and a short animation/movie to watch afterwards. (Can't cook? Bring hooch or something store-bought. No movies? Don't worry, we'll have plenty.)
How to RSVP: Please memail (aka "milfmail") me with your interest and proposed side so we can avoid a turkey and 500-crescent roll dinner. I will send you more details.
Disclaimer: We have 2 cats. They are extremely full of dander and friendliness. However, if you touch their tails they will eat your face. We will say "aw" and supply Neosporin but we are not otherwise responsible for any injuries you sustain.

Come as you are. No pictures if you don't want them taken of you, no shoutouts if you don't feel like shouting. We will just eat and drink and have some laughs and get sleepy. Don't be shy.

Accessible by holiday mass transit? (The lon/lat on your user page shows you living in the middle of the Columbia River.)

Aw man, I would have totally gone if we didn't just order an organic bird and invite a few people over.

It's North Portland, and pretty dang easy to bus to.

Accessible by holiday mass transit?

Yes, you just take the longboat!

ha ha ha

No really, like cortex says we are right on a couple of big bus lines (4, 44, 6) and just a short jaunt from a big Maxline. I assume that all runs on the holiday but you may want to check for yourself. Write for address details. Also, please no tentacle porn.

(matt, you can just bring the organic bird and your people over, why not? And spot jessamyn a ticket and call it "meeting expenses" or a "teambuilding retreat" or something. Oh please please please.)

I am also too far away but would like to cheer on this type of thing. A++ would attend.

I'll be out of town.

Dammit.

Toast to me with some roasted delicata squash, please thanks.

I don't own any tentacle porn. Not my style.
posted by Steven C. Den Beste at 6:10 PM on November 13, 2007

Should be fun! Now, nobody openly flout their families in order to attend this- family comes first on Thanksgiving.

I requested special permission to move thanksgiving dinner with my mom to lunch. She gave her blessing as long as I give her a shoutout.

Aw Steven, sorry, that was a dumb joke. Please try to come if you can. That goes for the rest of you, too. We will have a great time!
posted by melissa may at 6:34 PM on November 13, 2007

Well shoot. I was going to go until the invite was updated with a No Tentacle Porn rule. Tentacle porn and turkey goes together like, uh, well very carefully I suppose.

Hi there Portlanders. Seriously, if you haven't hung out with sleepy pete and Melissa May yet, you are in for a real treat. They are the nicest folks you'd ever want to meet in real life and I promise all of you that you'd enjoy yourself in their company even if there was only turkey and 500 rolls!

What a marvelous idea! PDX is awful lonely when you're alone....

Aww. I live on the 44's route, but I've just reserved a turkey and committed to hosting dinner for 12ish myself. Thanks for the invitation though. Sounds like a good time. Mmmm, crescent rolls.

This sounds righteous...

hi Melissa!

Hmmm. A friend of mine just moved to town (newer than me!) and we were kinda planning a min-feast of our own. But a feast with y'all sounds like a hoot... I'll have to see if my friend is brave enough for a meetup.
posted by janell at 12:48 PM on November 14, 2007

Janell, it would be great to see you and your friend. Just tell her it's a meal-up. Or that you've got to get a re-up on your turkey.
posted by sleepy pete at 1:01 PM on November 14, 2007

Heck yeah, janell.

*sniff* Now, if it were the OTHER Portland I could make my way north.....
posted by brujita at 10:24 PM on November 14, 2007

What other Portland?
posted by cmonkey at 10:52 PM on November 14, 2007

I bet she meant Poland. Poland's kind of northern, isn't it? The name is pretty similar, I can see how you'd get confused.
posted by Secretariat at 12:43 PM on November 15, 2007

She forgot it, clearly.

Dang it, meetup threads don't get front page real estate much more than a day anymore, do they? Why can't you chatty cathy MeTa mopes get your drama reups elsewhere once in a while?

Anyone mulling this over or stumbling onto it late: please memail no later than 11/20 so that if things get much bigger than we've currently planned for, I can get some reinforcements on the food front.

However, if you have holiday plans that fall through late for whatever reason, DO NOT BE SHY about getting in touch at the last minute if needed. This really will be a low key deal so if you want some food and company that day, come be with us.

Hi hototogisu, feel free to commute for some turkey, honey!

We should put little pilgrim hats on the cats and race them around the living room. It could be the start of a new holiday tradition.

Considering you were nearly the OTHER Boston.....;-P

You mean Massachusetts nearly had the OTHER Boston.

Man, here's what Metafilter needs to adhere by: all Portland, ME, posts should be designated that way. Otherwise, everyone in the entire world should know that it's the better Portland (and anything relating to Portland, OR, should henceforth be titled "Portland" or "The Better Portland" or, perhaps, "The Better Portland, as seen in the NYT" or, perhaps even better, "Portland, ha ha ha ha ha, wait, you mean there's another one.... Yes, we know it was named after it, ha ha ha ha, you mean there's another one? Really?").

Otherwise, brujita, yeah, you should totally come on over. The weather here is fine.

As for pilgrim hats on the cats, I tried to put a Halloween "princess" outift on one of those bastards and I still have the scars to prove it. Go for it. It'll be fun. I'll record it in horrible digital video. It'll be awesome.

I've been to your Portland with the Klickitat Street.... if I'd had earlier notice, I could have made it back :-(
posted by brujita at 3:06 AM on November 16, 2007

we can set the video of the cats mauling cortex (who I nominate as the Giver Of The Cat-hats this year) to yakkity sax and i swear we'll all be famous on youtube.
posted by cmonkey at 2:46 PM on November 16, 2007

If I wasn't already committed to two thanksgiving meals in Salem and giving rides to people I would totally come to yours.

I shall do my best to give a shout out to the Portland MeFi Thanksgiving Soire that day. Here's hoping the Turducken doesn't burn.

Cortex is from Portland!?!?!

When I get back from France there must be another, non-holiday related PDX meet-up! Even though I will be the youngest person there.
