BoC deletion reason? November 25, 2007 10:36 AM   Subscribe

Which guideline did the BoC post violate?

Cortex's deletion reason for removing this post is given as a "stuntish abuse of the guidelines". I checked the guidelines, which say:

"A good post to MetaFilter is something that meets the following criteria: most people haven't seen it before, there is something interesting about the content on the page, and it might warrant discussion from others."

The BoC post seems to meet all three, iss not newsfilter, is not axe-grindy, and is not offensive content. The post description is taken from a lyric from one of their songs, and served as an effective way of communicating to any BoC fans that there might something interesting inside. I've seen lots of other stuff posted to MeFi that does not have particularly detailed descriptions of what's inside the associated links.

Surely the post wasn't deleted simply for having all the links after the jump?

The post was deleted in large part for having all the links after the jump, and coming across as a weird, contextless political statement on the front page. That's just crazy nutso bad presentation, and I've discussed it with bigmusic in irc already this morning.

I've suggested that he rework the post to not be a site-defying no-link cypher and post it again in a day or two.

Guideline: Make sure you're linking to something on the web.

The FPP had no links at all on the front page, which is creative and cheeky but technically broke the guidleines.

Additionally, that front page was essentially an opinion about censorship only very tenuously related to the content of the post.

I hope bigmusic redoes and reposts it. A lot of work clearly went into the post.

I thought it was a great post, but, even though I'm a big BoC fan, I thought that the group had been censored for some reason, and also wondered why there were no links on the front page. So it stands to reason that folks who are not familiar with BoC would probably find the post questionable in the context of MetaFilter, which is too bad, since it really was a great collection of BoC YouTube stuff.

Probably would have worked better on a BoC fan site, but MetaFilter is...so...much...more...than...that!

Googly -- the frontpage part was not an opinion piece about censorship, it was a lyric lifted directly from one of the songs that were then linked to.

Anyway, good to know someone's had a chat with the poster and hopefully it will get reposted in a manner in which more people approve. I've been sending the deleted post to a bunch of people and it's got rave reviews, even from folks who have never listened to BoC before.

Lets be clear here. The reason this post was deleted was not because the uninitiated can't understand it, but because there was no link above the fold.

Let's be clear, it was deleted because of bad timing, lack of link and the old "oh it's a quote from someone you never heard of except without the, you know, quote marks to make that point a little clearer" trope which never gets old.

I liked the post and hope you redo it in a way that makes it make sense as a MetaFilter post, but because there is such a rough and ready "your favorite band sucks" countermeme to music posts generally, it makes some sense to try to make your post about them seem like they are awesome not just a tactic of making some implicit point about... something.

With the lack of clear context people will infer their own and it's pretty obvious where cortex's mind and mine are this weekend. Be cool, repost, follow another rule or two. Thrive.

BÖC is better than BoC.

Discuss.

Discuss? There is no discussion.

Considering I'm probably one of the few people here who has repeatedly listened to nearly everything by both bands...

...you're so fucking wrong it's depressingly pathetic, and I really feel deeply sorry for you that you live so far in the past that you can't wrap your mind around the present.

Get the fuck over it, Jon. Just because it doesn't have (obvious) guitars in it, doesn't mean it can't rock your world in a thousand different ways. Get the fuck over your pretentious self-presentation - you're only getting in the way of yourself, and the only one who cares is you.

Music is math, boyo. If there's one favorite, post-rock band of mine that I'd wish you could put aside your guitar-aesthetic wrongheadedness away over, if there's one band I deeply wished you could simply analyze the songwriting, the structures, the melodies of, and besides all that, the sheer enjoyability - Boards of Canada is it.

See, comparing Blue Oyster Cult to Boards of Canada is indeed an exercise in futility to begin with. It's like comparing Paleolithic Man to Atomic Age man. Which isn't to say that futurism for it's own sake is good - but to simply acknowledge that BOC is an ancestor of BoC.

Time moves forward. Tools change. The language changes. So do entire philosophies. History is remembered, recycled, reintegrated.

So, Boards of Canada isn't techno. It isn't new age synth music. Hell, it isn't even hip hop, trip hop, acid jazz or downtempo. It's not ambient, and it's not furniture music. It's way, way too structured and planned for experimental. It's not pop. I want to say that it's the closest thing to classical I've seen in decades - but it's not as simple as that, either.

As you may gather, they're one of my long-term favorites. They've been around a while, now. Yeah, they even achieved a bit of fame, maybe a bit of fortune. Yeah, annoying stoners listen to them, as do mild, mousy folks at dinner parties.

Forget all that. Just listen to it. Use good speakers and headphones - there's a lot of stuff in there that won't come out to play on a boombox. Play it just loud enough that you can feel the mids and lows clearly, so it reveals all the intense, complicated layers.

Hell, now I've got to play some for myself. All of it, methinks. I'm going to be here all day.

Orange.

To somebody not already familiar with Boards of Canada, there was nothing on the front page to indicate that the post was anything other than a linkless rant about censorship. The people who are already familiar with Boards of Canada are presumably perfectly capable of searching YouTube themselves. Terrible post. Next time, the following should go on the front page: something that explains that this post is a YouTube linkdump of songs by a group called "Boards of Canada". Perhaps a line or two about what kind of music they play or in what respect they are, in your opinion, good. If the censorship thing is in any respect relevant, link to a good story explaining what the hell that is about. Unless this is supposed to be only of interest to established fans of Boards of Canada, in which case perhaps a Boards of Canada fan forum would be a better place for this than MetaFilter.

Also, rather than 81 links in the "more inside", you could just link to a YouTube playlist for greater efficiency.

He DID link to something on the web.

I'm not defending the post. I agree with the deletion. But is a "post" what's on the front page or the whole thing (including the "more inside")?

I actually made the same mistake a while back. I put a bunch of links inside but nothing on the front page. I was rebuked and told I was stupid for not noticing that all FFPs contain links. And I think the rebukers have a point. It was unobservant of me.

Still, for literal-thinkers like me, it might be best for the guidelines to be a more explicit. I definitely WOULD have moved a link to the front page if the guidelines had said that there must be one there.

loq, I dig your funky vibe, and way back when I asked for some Electronica recommendations, I gave BoC a whirl. Did nothing for me, dude, sorry. We like what we like, and all the browbeating in the world won't change that.

See, comparing Blue Oyster Cult to Boards of Canada is indeed an exercise in futility to begin with. It's like comparing Paleolithic Man to Atomic Age man.

Well, the paleolithic part is a big aspect of their appeal to me. Loud riffs, big thumping drums, chant along choruses etc. Although BÖ are definitely more self-aware than most of their contemporaries (witness the goofiness and self-mockery of 'Godzilla' and 'Joan Crawford') the quality of the music shows that they still have an emotional attachment to what they do, so it never degenerates into snark

The only change the post needs is this:
Now that the show is over and we have jointly exercised our constitutional rights; we would like to leave you with one very important thought. Some time in the future, you may have the opportunity to serve as a juror in a censorship case or a so-called obscenity case. It would be wise to remember that the same people who would stop you from listening to Boards of Canada may be back next year to complain about a book, or even a TV program. If you can be told what you can see or read, then it follows that you can be told what to say or think. Defend your constitutionally-protected rights. No one else will do it for you. Thank you.

You're showing your age, jonmc. There's that long period of adolescence, starting at 12 or 13, where what music you listen to is more important than anything else. Hell, sporting the wrong radio station sticker was enough to get you punched in the face, or worse, called a fag.

So, in the spirit of the worldview, I say:

Ok, I agree with the weird, contextless political statement criticism. But links after the jump?

I thought every time we have a cryptic, no-explanation-provided set of links (I'm looking at you, hama7) a bunch of people in here flip out because "you're just too damn lazy to click on a link to find out what it's about" -- AND by that they apparently mean (as explained in several threads in the gray) also clicking on the thread link in order to see the tags by which you might figure out WTF the post is about.

So having to click on thread link because post is completely opaque otherwise = perfectly fine, you lazy bastard.

Having to click on thread link because the poster has courteously kept a laundry list of (admittedly yet another YT band tribute) links off the front page.

Sure. Ok.

I'm going to need, at the bare minimum, a Venn diagram showing the music of which jonmc and loquacious approve, and everything else.

Lets be clear. My Venn Diagram probably entirely encircles jonmc's Venn Diagram - for I do appreciate his taste and knowledge in music, and I've learned a bit from him besides.

Thus, inherently, his Venn Diagram is within mine. There's little he's recommended that I wouldn't listen to. I like old punk and rock, particularly the punk/alt stuff. I dig it.

There's little that my musical Venn diagram doesn't contain. I like everything from Ambient to Zydeco. I like bluegrass. I like blues. I like folk. I like jazz. I like hip hop. I like classical. I really like traditional music from around the world, particularly percussive stuff with chanting or dancing.

Actually, there's very little music I've met that I don't like. What I usually don't like is commercial, disposable pop. I don't like artistic falsehoods, I don't like crap, and I can tell when an artist is being impure and untrue to themselves. I am a truthsayer. Be true to yourself or face peril.

Basically, I like purity of essence and world peace.

This si probably where the irresistible force meets the immovable object. I believe that for the past century or do that the mass electronic media has existed, that artistic purity is a myth. So the whole 'authenticity' thing dosen't mean much to me, unless you're talking about emotional authenticity. Beyond that it's all as pointless about arguing why I like carrots and don't like string beans.

But do you like Peking opera? Be honest now!

This is where the True Scotsman Escape Clause works well:

"No, of course I don't like Peking opera. I said I like music!"

But do you like Peking opera?

What's not to like? You've got your clangy, splashy Chinese gongs (the kind that deliver that characteristic upward bend, that delightful splu-waaaaaaaiiiiiinggg!), you've got your snakey, meandering melodies played by reed horns, flutes, strings and such, and you've got your bizarre 'where-the-hell-is-the-tonal-center' vocals that defy every law of western melodic theory in the book! All in all, it's fantastic!

Not to mention the back-flips and the neon makeup.
