Oh man, you just wandered in? You do not want to miss what else has been going down in Meta tonight.

Now I must go to bed, since ideally I would be walking up in 2 hours...

Alright, serenity, come clean! What do you hope to gain from this post? Trying to direct traffic to your userpage or something? Yeah, right, "Happy New Year"... suuuuure, pal! I see through your little ruse.

I hope the intent of your post is to demand the best holiday you can get, as you do with every other event, rather than settling for a "double-check" that your celebration isn't being lit on fire. If that's what you're looking for, I recommend Arbor Day.
posted by dhammond at 9:09 PM on December 31, 2007

January 1st is the also the celebration of the circumcision of poor baby Jesus. I double-dare someone to make a FPP on that topic.

But maybe that will only occur when clocks strike 12 in Hawaii! It's only, like 7:15 over there. Someone will have to check. I'm not staying up that late.

Once when I was a little kid I was playing outside on Dec. 31 (it's Texas, so it was probably like 70 degrees), and a neighbor kid asked me if I was going to "light fireworks for happy new year's." He was pretty dumb.

Happy happy new year, everybody!

The solution is to crack the window open, point the .357 Magnum away from the Rimrocks, and fire at will.

True goose related a story:
A friend called me on Christmas morning and said her boyfriend wanted goose for Christmas. They knew a guy with a goose hunting license, so they took him along to go get a goose. So... where does one go to get a goose? Why, of course, the local duck and goose feeding pond! Yes, they nabbed a goose from the park. No gunfire, just chased one and grabbed it, and put it in the car. No clue whether chloroform was involved. Took it to the house, chopped the head off and started gutting and skinning.

And I am cold hearted? I don't think so!

And, yes, I actually can open my window, and at least the see the Rimrocks. I don't think I could hit them with a gunshot though, since they are a few miles away. And I do not own a gun.

Hey ho!

Dec 31st was one of the most hectic days of my year. The second day of a winter camp for kids from all over Afghanistan. There were some provinces that were recruited for by American Councils - they all showed up on time, and with their English tuned up and ready to go. The other "no-go" provinces that the Ministry of Education sent kids from are where it is too dangerous for Americans to be recruiting, and most of these guys showed up late, and I needed to do their placement tests. Two shy girls from Faizabad in Badakshan province who started their two day journey to Kabul on donkeys. 20-something men who are finishing 10th class in Khost and Gardez. Guys dressed like they stepped out of the 19th century, all of them from different tribes and in their special hats and blankets and baggy peron-tonbon and flowing robes. Dirty, dirty hands and faces. Their English was on the whole way too low for our program, but what are you gonna do, send them back home?

In retrospect that was a pretty good day. This is a weird planet. HAPPY NEW YEARS.

Gleðilegt nýtt ár!

First there was a family gathering, with the requisite eating of a lot of tasty things and the watching of Áramótaskaupið. Then there was the communal blowing up of fireworks. In Iceland pretty much every family has its own private fireworks show on New Year's. Looking over Reykjavík around midnight is amazing, fireworks going off everywhere, the whole cityscape acquiring a layer of color on top of itself. Afterwards I went to a party with some friends where I wore a Venetian mask, bonded over feminism, drank Havana Club and a fine white wine, sang Dylan, Cave and Megas with the last few people and walked home at 10 in the morning where I ate some leftovers and took a shower.

Finally, I want to share with you the joke that was in my New Year's cracker:

What kind of sweet swings through the jungle?

Tarzipan.

May all of you have a lovely 2008, with more hugs and kisses and less pomade fires and weasel bites.

2007 sucked. I'm glad it died. 2008 better watch itself, too. 2008 tries to pull the same kind of shit 2007 did, it's history. 2009? I've got my eye on you. You better be prepared to step in early. Things happen.

I'm with It's Raining Florence Henderson. 2007 was distinctly not my year. 2008 had better watch it, or I'm going after it with a crowbar.

It's been a very low-key start to the year and I like it that way. I've spent most of the day napping. I'm pro-nap! And I vote!
