I'm flying from Londonengland to Toronto next month because I need to make a series of cake-related decisions. So, er, meet-up? Due to these dessert dilemmas, I can't really do any other date than Friday February 15, or at an absolute pinch, +/- 1 day... which is why I've asked so early. I have only one requirement, which is the opportunity to drink a beverage at #e0c616 or darker. Oh, and I will need to take a GO train back to Mississauga at the end of the gathering. I can supply references. Anybody around?

In questions of wedding cake the answer is always:
If one cake, then luscious white cake with lemon flecks, lemon creme between the layers, and buttercream frosting on top.

If two cakes, add a chocolate cake with hazelnut frosting, possibly with red fruit jam between the layers.

If three cakes, add carrot cake.

I descended on this thread yesterday, eager to offer a reference for my good friend randomination, were such a reference required.

Prior to pressing post, I contemplated my misbehaviour and the general shenannigans, not just at the last London meet-up, but indeed, at all meet-ups in London to date.

I worried, you see, that these upstanding Torontonian Mefites might get the wrong impression of dear, sweet randomination (who did NOT participate in the aforementioned misbehaviour, in case his bride-to-be is lurking!).

Witnessing the above, I venture to offer said reference now, secure in the knowledge that our esteemed Torontonian mefites clearly comprehend that what happens at Meet-up stays at Meet-up.

Well, I've had my greens for the day so let me be the first (!) in this thread to suggest a few different places to meet. There is always the Wheat Sheaf (King & Bathurst) which is usually recommended to out-of-towners because it is so old (old bar in Toronto) but since you live in the UK, a building merely 150 years old is probably not too impressive. A little further along King street is the Foggy Dew which is much newer and has baked brie on the menu, it's an Irish Pub though, I don't know if that matters to you. Chinese New Year begins on Feb 7th and the celebrations continue until Feb 22 so surely Chinatown would be colourful for you (do they celebrate Chinese New Year in London?). Hmmm, there are lots of little resturants there but I'm not so sure of a place to get beer because I don't drink. I am sure one of our connissours will pop in with an opinion. There is also the Bovine Sex Club (Queen St) but conversations can be limited while the bands are playing. An awesome after hours club is the Matador (just recently saved from becoming a parking lot - apologies to Joni Mitchell). Toronto is really small so you don't really need to worry about being close to Union (ugh, overpriced Tourist traps, Wayne Gretszkys/Planet Hollywood anyone?).

heh, after Meatbomb's Niagara Falls Askme maybe we should arrange a roadtrip to Niagara Falls to count South East Asians as a proportion of the tourist population.

Anybody else got any ideas?

RedRoom works for me, too. Cheap food, cheap drinks, lots of space, and right on Spadina so the all-night Spadina streetcar runs to.... you guessed it... Union Station.
Coincidentally, the last MeFi Toronto was at Nirvana, RedRoom's sister spot in Little Italy.

A minor observation.

I think I speak fairly clearly. I have an accent, but that's not as if nobody's heard somebody from England before. So why do service personnel find me so hard to understand?

In the cinema today, I order water from the kid behind the counter and get given tea. At Tim Horton's I ask for two maple swirls and get given three. And at Swiss Chalet -- I went to the loo after my meal, came out and couldn't find my table. I found the waitress, and I said:

"Hi -- I'm really quite tired and jetlagged and I seem to have forgotten where I'm sitting. Could you tell me where my table is, please?"

"Sure. That way's north, that way's south, that's east and that's west."

Where the cock did that come from? In what possible accent in the world does that sound like: "Hi -- I don't know where the points of the compass are right now. Could you give a demonstration please?"

Morning. I made it home. Unfortunately the all-night streetcar down Spadina runs all night but only stops at Adelaide, so I ran, weaving through club queues and skidding over icy pavements all the way from Adelaide/Spadina. I think at one point I vaulted a six-foot snowbank. At Queen I dived into the underground passageways thinking they would get me down the block faster. That was a mistake. I lost all sense of direction and had to be escorted back up the stairs, gibbering, by the security guard.

I got to Union bus station to find the gates bolted shut.

Arse.

So I just climbed over the barriers in the middle of the road and into the bus station to see the last GO bus for Clarkson just pulling out and around the corner. I think I actually said "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO".

This caused the policewoman to wave the bus down and stop it, and I jumped on.

Then I got to Clarkson to find no taxis, but a Mississauga Transit bus about to pull out going where I wanted to go. 45 minutes and the most circuitous route imaginable later I got home to find my fiancee climbing up the walls and her mother driving around searching for me.

There's been an awful fire on Queen St. W. near Bathurst, but it's the south side, not the north side, so Gandhi's Roti is safe. *hugs tehloki*

Sorry guys, my husband and I ended up catching a random ride to NYC for that day (for the weekend)... I was disappointed to miss the meetup, but I've never been to NYC. Where ya'll are right here.
