That's some pretty fucked up HTML.

But, there's no reason matt couldn't add a color field to our user names, letting us choose a color. But, you'd need to do some fancy coding to prevent the name colors from matching common backgrounds (i.e. gray, blue, green, etc)

This comment in that meta thread has a list of other usernames with embedded HTML (including the one this post is about).

There is font styling info as part of the username, which now if someone tried to create a username like that would be disallowed.

Before the Great New User Hiatus of 2003/2004, the site would only allow 10 new users a day to sign up. I tried day after day for months to get an account, but because of my computer-usage schedule at the time the slots would always fill up before I could get the chance.

Anyone remember when the 'only 10 per day' policy went into effect? Because if it was in place when the users in the comment linked to by voidcontext above were signing up multiple accounts in a row, I think I'm retroactively pissed off.

Yeah, these are all artifacts of various hacks people tried when signing up using holes that were patched years ago. We'll remove them (and no, you can't create accounts with HTML in them today).

When ObsureReferenceMan noticed Plutor noticing the old hacks via the Contacts' Activity sidebar, the full extent of the dumb prank was revealed using Burger-Eating Invasion Monkey's statistical wallop on the newly available MetaFilter Infodump. Hope that clears that up.

There's my Metafilter mark contact contributions Greasemonkey script. It uses stars (grey for incoming contacts, yellow for outgoing, double star for co-contacts) and houses for people who live within 10 miles of you. I could easily change it to use colors, if that was in demand.

I spose I could also make it configurable, a la Mefiquote 2.0.

I was a ten-per-dayer, and I got in after only about a week of trying. This would have been summer of 2002. For comparison, user 13305 joined in December 2001, when I'm pretty sure that only the Sooper Seekrit Backdoor Sign-up was available.
