Having been a Giants fan since the Joe Pisarcik days, the '86 victory was thrilling, the '91 victory was surprising, but this one was enormously satisfying. Great post, btw. I didn't realize that Facenda had died so long ago, what a great voice. His pronouncement of "the Frozen Tundra: Lambeau Field" actually still echoes in the odd football dream I have every now and again.

Last night, I explained as best I could to a friend the etiology of the terms "fanfic" and "slashfic"—new, to him, when they came up in a jokey conversation between me and another friend earlier in the evening. I gave him a rundown of the whole mess, trying to draw a rough picture of the path from auteur-produced fiction to commercially sanctioned canonical (and non-canonical) third-party fiction, to pseudo-canonical fan fiction and then the subgenre of kinda-vaguely-pseudo-canonical shipper fanfic and then finally full-on slash fiction Kirk/Spock style erotica. This was all new to him, which was kind of charming.

But I realize just now that I stopped short of the cross-universe, cross-species, metamorphic/anthropomorphic furfic type point on the continuum. I'm not sure this is a bad thing, really, judging by the tone in his voice when he asked me how, exactly, I knew about all of this. But I do feel a little remiss.

But what I'm really trying to get to is the realization that someone, somewhere, may be writing—may have written, posted, and promoted fervid self-abuse through—mathfic. Naughty human-numeral hybrids completely violating the axioms of set theory in their mad passion.

The Mathematician's Nightmare: The Vision of Professor Squarepunt by Bertrand Russell's Nightmares of Eminent Persons has very passionate numbers but mostly not in the way you're thinking, you filthy, filthy people. Still, it does mention that odd numbers love their attendent evens, and that even evens feel kindly towards their odds (however odd they may be). Throw in some Spuffy and it's an erotic opus.

I get this exact same reaction all the time. Frankly, I think that I scare most of my friends. On Sunday I was tempted to explain/show people the "2 girls 1 cup" phenomenon, but don't want to completely alienate everyone I know.
