We brought it back on the notion that it could probably go well despite the fact that the poster was pretty thing on description. A little more context would have helped with the initial what-the-heck reaction.

I personally like wonky stuff, even if I wouldn't want most metafilter posts to look like this one. But then, I can't think of a kind of metafilter post that I'd want most mefi posts to look like. Variety is nice.

Wonky? I'd just call it an obscure text-heavy academic history post, but yeah now that I think about it, I guess that counts as "wonky." Thanks for rethinking that one, whoever it was who rethought. Funny, but I'm currently reading this book about the Abbasids, Barmakids, et al, and Transoxiana was popping up regularly on maps and in the text, making me wonder why I'd never seen the term before. So, uh, getting a free pointer to the archive at transoxiana.org (even if some of it is in Spanish) is kind of a neat bit of serendipity.

I might even call it the reason I keep coming back to MeFi.

This was a good thing - I need no context to understand the pivotal significance of the Central Asian crossroads in the long course of human development, but am at a loss as to why I should give a toss about Barack Obama and his likely nugatory impact on the realities of US power structures.
Which is a flame-baity way of saying, just because it appears obscure doesn't mean it isn't worth reading. More, I'd say that's the kind of thing I like the best about this place, stuff I didn't know already.

It was written really strangely, but I liked the way it was written. Just, hey, this is a cool thing I found on the internet. The links were descriptive and honest (and never a single letter long), there was no baiting, there was no pretentious "But what does it all MEAN?"

Sometimes posts that seem like mystery meat posts to a bunch of people (and the mods) make a bunch of sense to other people who would like a chance to discuss whatever the topic is. We got an email or two basically explaining what the post was about and decided to reopen the thread. Generally speaking, most mystery meat posts aren't very good, but we-the-mods don't have to like/appreciate/understand each post on the blue, or anyplace.
