This post is cool, not just because of the answers, but more even more because it shows how very diverse the membership of Metafilter is. I wanted to say this in the orinal post but thought it wasnt a answer...so I brought it here.

Of 35 people, many of them have different jobs. (The clear majority of them being well-paying jobs that require a college degree.) Were you expecting everyone to have the same well-paying, degree-requiring job or something? Oy vey.

I dig the question but I didn't think the results were that diverse. Basically scienists, doctors, editors, writers and ad execs. I was hoping to see answers from an astronaut, a garbage-man, a leg-breaker for the mob, etc.

I expected more responses from computer geeks and fewer from people whose jobs don't depend on continuous net connectivity. I agree with ShawnString -- the range of responses is fascinating.

The other distinction is that the work of many blue-collar trades is their daily practice. Plumbers only make money while working on pipes, welders while welding. Musicians, doctors, and even web geeks in small shops like mine have a significant part of their work days taken up by doing things that aren't a part of their craft - I figure this week so far I've spent about 28 of the past 32 paid hours on client management, platform research and proposal documentation, in addition to the usual office administrivia. If I didn't have the opportunity to put an occasional fifteen minutes into somebody else's CSS problem, I could spend entire weeks as a web developer, making money without doing any developing.

I'm the knitting/yarn store employees, but really it's cheating. Thursday was my last day. I go back to being a software developer on Monday. That's a lot more boring (but sadly, pays a lot better).

My least-favorite portmanteau is "webisode." They had that one plastered on every bus station in Sydney last year, and it made my blood boil every time I saw it.
