I can haz add tags? April 9, 2008 9:26 AM   Subscribe

Why can some users add tags to some other users' posts? How long has it been that way?

Burhanistan can add tags to loquacious's posts. I can add tags to utilitaritron and tractorfeed's posts.

You can add tags to mutual contacts' posts.

Forgot to mention: it would seem that you can add tags if you link to user and user links to you. I did figure that part out. Is that correct? And why?? I mean, what if some jackass goes to one of their contacts' posts and adds a crazynonsequitur tag? Do you really trust us to not engage in such asshattery?

Yeah. I did figure that out. So.. why?? And is there another meta on this? I wasn't able to find it. Sorry if it's been discussed before.

Presumably if each of you lists the other one as a contact, you trust each other. If someone you thought you trusted engages in asshattery, delete them (as a contact).

If they're one of your contacts, presumably, if they did stuff you didn't approve of to tags of your post, you could simply drop them as a contact, and delete their asshat tags.

Yes, one would think so. But, I'm all for adding "enemies" and "frenemies" labels for contacts.

It's been that way since last july.

And for the record I think it's cool and should be maintained, but maybe some better documentation would help. (On the other hand it was links two and three here, so it's no that hard to find out...)

[For those of you following at home, I originally had added "crazynonsequitur" as a tag to one of utilitaritron's posts, thinking, "eh, I'll just delete it once the discussion plays out. But, that would make the discussion rather confusing farther down the line, so I'm deleting it now and explaining, while it's still early and you might actually see this comment]

But if it's a big problem for folks maybe the powers that PB could add an 'Allow contacts to tag my posts' profile checkbox.

I like TPAA's idea. And I like the idea of tagging meta posts. If ever there was a post perfect for a tag, or vice versa, it is this post for the crazynonsequitur tag, or vice versa.

Here, this cat video will cheer you up.

I'm all for that. Then maybe my first MeTa won't be deleted because I can't use search properly (I did try). But... maybe if we could tag MeTa posts, I would have been able to find the previous ones more easily...

you'll have to excuse me now - i'm training a dog to give me a lobotomy so i can keep up with this site today

Pretty much. If someone does decided to engage in such asshattery after all, we have a couple tools that will let us see what they've been up to and they'll likley be stripped of the ability to do so without recourse. In the mean time, everybody else seems to be behaving pretty well.

Hmm... the crazynonsequiturtag page is going backwards: "Displaying 1 through 0." Is this some kind of black hole tag that is going to start sucking tags off other posts?
posted by tractorfeed at 11:24 AM on April 9, 2008

"Displaying 1 through 0."

All tags with no results do that. An unsafely-assumed "Displaying 1 through" string on someone's part, I'm guessing.

well, this late in the day, that would seem to be all. the post is obviously staying. but as a rule, there is a certain type of person that thinks that all things cat related belong on the blue. some call these people "cat people." you know, that person who incessantly talks about their cat, or who gushes over stupid cat shit all day or has pictures of cats all over their desk. that kind of nut. without exception, every one of these people are the type of person you can only stomach in small doses. the constant devotion to the idea of "cute" is nauseating in anything but 5 minute durations. cat people do not manage newspapers, they don't run movie studios, they don't direct. They don't write anything that ever gets published. no one likes their many many photographs of cats and no one wants to put their cat paintings in galleries. they don't manage anybody in an office. in fact, they've never been in a supervisory position of any kind in any workplace, except for the occasional library, and when asked how they spend their weekends they never have anything interesting to relate. their view of the world is so myopic in its scope that no one ever pays much attention to their ideas or opinions on anything, and this is largely how it should be.

it's just a shame that they get to put whatever the hell they want on the front page, is all.

not that mythmaker is necessarily a cat person, btw.

If it's any comfort, I'm not a cat person. I don't know for sure that Matt and Jess aren't cat people, though the lack of cat pictures in their flickr streams seems to suggest they're fairly emotionally well-balanced. (Ignore the pictures of cats that show up in my stream. I'm a camera person who knows cat people who know I'm a camera person, is all.)

I just thought the post was really cute and silly. And while I'm bracing myself for the ZOMG SLFV thing too, I feel like there was maybe some crazy pre-emptive reaction along those lines driving some of the negative reactions.
posted by cortex (staff) at 1:27 PM on April 9, 2008

what's interesting is that the cat thread has far more noise in it about the crosstagging phenomenon than people who don't like the post. In fact, the thread is remarkably positive, which I'm inclined to be happy about even though I don't especially like the post. But then, there will always be people willing to turn their brains off in favor of some stupid cat shit.

What's the deal with your nickname? How did you get it? If your nickname is self-explanatory, then tell everyone when you first started using the internet, and what was the first thing that made you say "wow, this isn't just a place for freaks after all?" Was it a website? Was it an email from a long-lost friend? Go on, spill it.

"dersins" is an acronym for a German phrase that rhymes in Spanish, and almost rhymes in French. If that seems deliberately opaque, that's probably because it is.

Flickr lets you decide who can tag your posts. I think the levels are your friends/your friends+contacts/everyone.

Are we not trusted to tag our own posts?

It has apparently escaped your notice that some people are not very good at tagging; there was at least one poster who refused to tag his posts at all. There is no harm in other people filling out an insufficient set of tags; tags are not your special-snowflake personal expression, they are a way for other people to find the post if they're interested in one of its aspects. The poster may think they're being oh so clever for tagging their post "woohoo lols batshitinsane," but it's a lot more helpful when someone comes along and adds tags that actually indicate the subject. I have not seen any misuse of the system.

And if you don't like it, delete your contacts.

Are we not trusted to tag our own posts?

That's not really the way we're looking at it. In our ideal world (which admittedly doesn't overlap with everyone's) we'd like to have open tagging where everyone could tag everything. However, acknowledging that this site has many, er, spirited members, this might not be a great idea, so we made a compromise where your contacts can tag your stuff and you can tag theirs. This feature comes with the assumption that more tagging is generally better than less tagging and the promise that if people abuse it there will be some sort of plague that befalls them.

Tags mostly work on MeFi as a way to check for duplicates, group like posts with like, and so that people can view the site/questions/music in their interest areas more easily. They're additive generally speaking and we see them more as "metadata" to a post and not as part of the post per se.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 8:14 AM on April 10, 2008

I've not made use of the cross tagging feature since it was implemented, but I've liked that it exists.

I think it's kind of notable how Mounds and Almond Joy have been marketed on equal grounds historically. It's not something I think you really see with a lot of other products—even when there's a matched pair (e.g. NyQuil and DayQuil) you usually get an ad targetting one of the pair with a quick little tag for the other at the end, as if an afterthought.

But Mounds and Almond Joy are some sort of wonderful binary star system, inseparable.

I also wonder if at some point somebody was all "but shouldn't we call it like 'almounds joy' to emphasize the relationship between the two?" and then that guy got fired.
