Coincidence?

Dictionary.com's word of the day is fustian. I think we know who to blame.

I'm going with not-coincidence, since there appears to be no coinciding. Nor do I know whom to blame.

so wait wait wait.

it's a coincidence that fustian is the word of the day over at dictionary.com, on a day which has no significance to our own peculiar but almost totally forgotten day of fustian usage?

that is indeed a coincidence. no doubt I'll understand who we can blame for this once I discover which mefite is responsible for completely unrelated happenings.

fustian \FUHS-chuhn\

adjective:
1. Made of fustian.
2. Pompous; ridiculously inflated; bombastic.

Indeed.

fustian \FUHS-chuhn\

adjective:
3. Used to describe a MeTa thread that seems to be entirely nonsensical, since it provides no context or points of reference, or those that it does provide do not illuminate readers as to the purpose of the thread.

Synonyms: cryptic, inscrutable, mystifying, baffling, abstruse.

that was 4/20. this is 5/5.

Yeah, but today is Cinco de Mayo, a traditional day of partying. 4/20 is also a day of merrymaking, just of a different kind; though it is the sort you might sell your soul to be a part of.

It's really all very Faustian.

quonsar that was 4/20. this is 5/5.

I dunno if it's a total fail. I could link 4/20 and Cinco de Mayo together very easily without very much effort on my part. Without being fustian, even.

boo_radley,

We are not to be blamed for this coincidence.

Do not try to find hidden messages in future words of the day.

Skipping dictionary entries equal to the number of days since a word was used on MetaFilter will also get you nowhere.

Look it took us a while to figure out how to bribe the people at dictionary.com so I'm sorry its not exactly synchronous ok? They have some... unusual tastes, but we did it. We all did some things that we are not proud of, things we can never take back. But I'd like to think it's worth it. Please try to appreciate the work involved.

I used the word fustian in a comment last night, foolishly engaging unarmed in a battle of wits with my good friend bokane, but this was on some AskMe thread I doubt you've read. And let me assure you, dear readers, I need no dictionary-dot-com approbation before deploying the more rococo oitliers of the English lexicon. Oh no sir!
posted by Abiezer at 10:01 PM on May 5, 2008

oitliers - I bet that's not in your dictionary-dot-com! Because it's a fucking typo

oitliers might be a "typo" to you but to my ear it's this plumber I worked with once. He was from Gravesend, Brooklyn. Among his myriad verbal fillips, he also pronounced "whore" "whoow- auh."

Though I am confident he is not behind this "fustian" flap. Which he would have pronounced "fust-yyan."

Have a nice day.
