Ah, I remember my first year anniversary on Metafilter. It was a cool, crisp spring day, just as an ice age was starting. As I was walking home this evening, a little girl was riding her bike in the middle of the street. She still had the training wheels on as she wobbled and struggled to peddle. It reminded me of when I was little and how badly I wanted a bicycle but couldn't get one. My parents wouldn't let me have a bike until I was 12; my mom was too afraid I'd hurt myself. I'd pass the bike section in the store and just look, having given up asking my parents about it long ago. I eventually did get one after much pleading and begging. Amazingly, getting my driver's license at 16 and the subsequent borrowing of the family car passed without incident.

Thirteen people call me a contact. I'm really, really not into getting any kind of gratification or validation from the amount of contacts or favorites I have. It really doesn't mean much to me.

Funny you should mention that. I'm laid low with a monster case of bronchitis that I probably picked up at work. I work at a used bookstore of some repute and one of my jobs is opening and sorting boxes of books that people bring into sell. A pretty fair chunk of the sellers are homeless guys and other street flotsam who fished these books out of God knows where*. They probably sprung some superbug on me. Plus I got a tetanus shot because of box cutter cuts and the time a few weeks ago where I accidentally plunged a label-scraper into my thumb.

But, no, I don't want an enema. That's just an elaborate scam so you can take pics of my tush and sell them to the tabloids.

*and there's an already well publicized incident where two of our homeless regulars were found to have been 'cleaning' their salvaged books by spitting on them and rubbing vigourously. Yeesh.

Some would argue that the subprime mortgage crisis began with Alan Greenspan and his reckless lowering of interest rates. However, I can pinpoint the precise moment when the whole fiasco began : 1989, when the B-52s announced to the world their acquisition of the Love Shack.

The reason why this has gone unnoticed for so long is that Kate Pierson and Fred Schneider did such a capital job of covering their tracks. Upon arrival, they took note of the Love Shack's popularity with the local youth. They noticed the dancin'. They noticed the kissin'. They noticed the lovin'. However, they were unmoved by the spectacle of such wholesome fun. They had one thing on their mind, and that was the allmighty buck. "No problem, " they thought, "the current owners are just a bunch of hippies. We'll force them out in no time."

And, unfortunately for the people of Georgia, they were correct. It only took one call from Pierson to the Department of Housing to get the place shut down. It didn't matter that the place was a cultural treasure. It didn't matter that it was one of the few places left in the Atlanta region where one could shimmy and move around and around and around. It didn't even matter that it contributed significantly to the regional economy, with folks lined up outside just to get down. Apparently, rusted tin roofs are considered a major hazard in the state of Georgia, and as such constitute grounds for immediate condemnation.

After the property was devalued by the condemnation order, Kate and Fred were able to buy it for almost nothing.

So what exactly did they do with the Love Shack? Well, that's an interesting question, the answer to which involves an alphabet soup of CDOs, SIVs, ARMs, and MBSes. Kate and Fred flipped the property almost immediately, selling out to some schmoe who lied about his income in order to secure loans to buy the Shack and other similar properties. And we all know how the rest of the story goes - I believe you can read all about it on the dude's blog, if his lawyer hasn't yet convinced him to take it down.

So what are the good, fun loving people in Georgia to do now? They can bang, bang, bang on the doors of the Capitol building all they want, in the hopes that the Federal Government will step in and put an end to this madness. Good luck on that one. At this late stage of the game, it would probably be best just to rent instead of buying. Or better yet, they could stay in a hotel. I hear there's one in California that has vacancies.
