Where to talk crisis stuff October 9, 2008 2:15 PM   Subscribe

Do we have a thread somewhere for this week's market crisis?

Not only are the lending markets in a death spiral, but now we have the equity markets cratering with the DJIA down to 8500 this afternoon. The weeklong odyssey of this crisis is alarming but doesn't really fit the short-attention-span style of the front page. I'm looking to read more with sensible people like those on MeFi.

So... is there a thread somewhere for this? Could there be a front page sideblog for the relevant discussion thread? If MeFi isn't the place, is there a good website you all prefer for thoughtful and interesting discussion of the crisis?

We're hedging our comments across multiple threads in case one of them gets a sudden injection of insightiquidity

Personally I want to know why the fuck my MeFi membership is now only worth $1.20.

I honestly didn't realise when I made my initial investment that MeFi was carrying so many sub-prime users.

I know that lately during electiontime the site has been getting a lot more discussion-y with longer threads on current event topics but we're not likely to enable that any more than we have been. No thread about the mess lately seems like THE thread so maybe we'll have to keep our eye open to see if one turns into that. With a lot of these current events threads, even though discussion gets heated and generates a lot of comment flags, the threads themselves don't get many flags and so we usually just leave them be unless they're really obvious dupes.

At my firm, we're having our twice-daily group therapy sessions in the stairwell - one at lunch and again after the close. This afternoon's topic was about whether or not we should buy handguns to help us cope with this shit. Drinks are on the house.

I always try to diversify my MeFi investments with extra accounts, so I'll always have a Pot to piss in.

The Mariana Trench forms the boundary between two tectonic plates, where the Pacific Plate is subducted beneath the Philippine Plate.

Hopefully the necessity will inspire some creativity in the form of an awesome FPP. This is what I keep coming back to this place for. You guys never fail to deliver. During the staggeringly long Palin thread, I remember wondering if there would possibly another one like it to discuss politics. Look where we are now...so many threads, so little time!

not as long as we have idiots linking to idiots who have made videos of other idiots behaving like aforementioned idiots in some vaguely political context. this is after all an important election.

"Financial cocks". I like that. You know what my friend said the other day? "Ridiculous countries". Made my day.

D'oh, cortex deleted it.

Ahh well, from what I've gathered in the comments it looks as though Monday is going to be a real barn-burner, so maybe an OMGWTFCRASH thread will be allowed up when the DJIA drops 10% or something.

Perhaps a post to thank the French for their remarkable restraint in not pointing and laughing at the silly Anglo-Saxons and their yo-yo economies, despite having to listen to years of tedious lectures from us on deregulation, efficiency and the neoliberal way of screwing the citizenry?

In the meantime, you can get some current events from blogs like The Big Picture, Calculated Risk, Naked Capitalism or, if you really want to talk doomsday scenarios (pdf), you can read Roubini.

I dunno Abiezer, in this episode of From Our Own Correspondent, BBC reporter Emma Jane Kirby gets an earful from her optométriste about the profligacy of les Anglais.

I had no idea the French were known for their tightwaddery, I've never felt closer to my heritage than I do now.

btw, just got my TIAA CREF quarterly report, or rather received it by email on the 4th and had been ignoring it assiduously until tonight, with a single malt in hand, I logged in.

-21% change since June

woo hoo, working my ass off for the next 80 years, here I come
