I had a chance to meet Gallagher when I was about 13. He maintained a very odd conversation with Jim Stafford, my dad and me, all while walking along the edge of the landscaping like it was a tightrope. Unfortunately, there was no Sledge-O-Matic present.

When I was a kid we used to sleep over at my aunt's house as an occasional treat for the us and for our parents. She'd order in pizza and let us drink all the soda we wanted. Then we'd play nintentdo for a while (our uncle would kindly beat the hardest levels for us) and fall asleep watching Gallagher on HBO or whatever cable channel he was on. When we'd wake up she always had a gallon of chocolate milk and a couple of boxes of snack cakes ready for breakfast. Awesome.

We'd go to bed watching a grown man tell jokes we didn't understand, then smash shit with a giant hammer. When we woke up there was chocolate milk and cakes for breakfast!

This is so awesome.

What you really have here are three costumes in one. With a sledgehammer, you've got Gallagher! Replace the sledgehammer with a mushroom, and, viola! Mario! Switch that out for a paint brush, and suddenly it's that guy from the TV show we used to watch in elementary school where the guy showed us how to draw funny, alien scenery!

(Anyone else know what show that is? I can't remember the guy's name. I must not be the only one who had to watch the show with the guy who looked kind of like Mario and drew a bunch of silly aliens. This comment sure would've been better if I could remember him.)

Hmm...I knew that show as the Imagination Station. And it sounds like there was another show called The Secret City, which does sound familiar too. That dude had a lot of shows!

I sent him a drawing and you were supposed to get something back, some sort of Imagination Station club kit or something and I never got it. How disappointing. You owe me, Mark Kistler!

As to the images in the link, when I first saw them it took a lot of effort not to post something proclaiming how cute they were...something with a lot of initialisms, capital letters and exclams. Very tough to resist that urge.

lampoil, you're right, the show was "The Imagination Station", but I discovered him through a VHS tape at my local library which I thought was called "The Draw Squad", and at least his book certainly was.

At the time I was convinced that all I needed to do was learn the tricks of drawing that everyone else seemed to be born with that my hands simply couldn't do. I later found out that for a lot of people it's a case of faking-until-making and a greater amount of manual dexterity than I am capable of.

I know this comment is going to make me even more unpopular than I am, but... so what?

The stream of "Here's the latest exhale from Matt/Jess/Josh" on MeTa is, to me, completely annoying. Aside from the off-putting suck-up air these posts give off, they feed a cult-of-personality that a "community weblog" should be avoiding. In addition, they have disruptive side effects like bringing comments on that post over here, instead of on the original blog, where they belong.

I love the mods, and I think the work they do on the site is fantastic. Occasionally, one will do something interesting outside of the MeFi universe. But you know what? There's already a site to post interesting things you find on the web. MetaTalk is a site to discuss things about MetaFilter, which these things are not.

Besides, they're taking up valuable real estate that could be used for perfectly good flameouts.

It's tough on all of us. I, for example, was forced to avoid saying "I'd hit it... with a sledgehammer!" about the watermellon costume, tying MetaFilter history and Gallagher's Sledge-o-matic schtick together. But it was too creepy to tell the joke about Matt's little daughter. So I didn't say it. Because I'm not "that guy." But it hurt me.

If you click the links, she has been running a fundraiser for a couple weeks, asking for donations to DonorsChoose.org, and in exchange for each donation, she makes a blog post and calls out the donation. So I gave some money to help some kids learn about music in a school somewhere is basically my only connection to it.
