I wonder if there was anything more to the choice of music than its fast, driving beat. "O Fortuna" is a grim and fatalistic poem (lyrics and translation here), not the kind of thing you'd wish on your friends. Mecum omnes plangite... Yikes!

Holy crap - I'm in there too! Vana salus semper dissolubilis but eh, I got my 15 minutes of fame.

I just heard from forrest. He'll be taking the movie down tonight when he gets off work. Apparently one of the photographers *cough*stynxno*cough* demanded that forrest either remove his pictures or link to a site other than where forrest got the pictures. Forrest doesn't think it would be right to credit one photographer without crediting all of them and he doesn't have the time to go back and ID the owner of each photo and ask for permission. He says he'll work on replacing the pictures in question and repost the movie sometime later.

The site isn't about the pictures so much as it is about the technique. He put up the site when he was asked to do a presentation to a local user's group. It's far easier for him to create a movie with a generic set of pictures than it is to do unique pictures, but he thought folks here might have some fun with the MeFi movie.

BTW, he told me that he tried to put the pictures in user number order. If there's a group shot, he used the lowest number in the group unless that person had an individual picture. He searched Flickr with the MetaFilter tag, then started grabbing pictures and naming them the way they were ID'ed on Flickr. He tried to double-check the IDs by cross-matching to profiles here, but he may have gotten some user numbers wrong. Maybe that will help jessamyn towards her goal.

stynxno: I wouldn't have outed you here, but I saw your email to forrest. He was trying to work with you and there was no need for snark.

Oh lawd.

He made a movie using copyrighted images under a variety of licenses. He claimed to have respected copyrights. My photos are not available under a CC or any sort of license. I asked for credit. He declined. If he is unwilling to give me credit and respect my copyright, then I am unwilling for him to use my photographs in his creation. Rather than bring it up here, I emailed him asking for the 17 photos of mine ( that I found) be removed.

This isn't rocket science. If you say you're going to respect copyright, respect copyright. If you're not, don't claim that you are.

Kind of like this, actually, only this skews far far further towards the hilarity. Several thumbs up and I'm sorry it's leaving us.

I emailed him asking for the 17 photos of mine ( that I found) be removed.
You also accused him of willfully ignoring the copyright, which he didn't -- he made a mistake in interpreting your conditions. You gave him the option of linking to some half-assed blog that wasn't where he got the pictures. Since that didn't work for him, he offered to remove the offending pictures as soon as you identified them, but you had to get in some self-righteous snark.
posted by joaquim at 11:14 AM on October 29, 2008

Are you forrest? If you are, that's fine. We can talk about this here if you would like. If not, then you seemed to have some information that I wasn't aware of in the email back and forth Forrest and I had.

However, it doesn't change what I mentioned to him. You might take it as a snark, but from my point of view, if an individual is unwilling to follow copyright (and it is obvious on my flickr images what type of copyright license I follow), he shouldn't claim that he did follow it. I can't read his mind, I wasn't there when he created the movie. I can only take what he said on his site at face value. I have no problem disagreeing with him (and point it out) when I witness what appears to be a willful rejection of my copyright. Claiming to follow and actually not following doesn't mean covers everyone's behavior. You're not allowed to kick the ball over the fence and go "my bad". I merely asked for credit. If he didn't want to link to my blog, he could have mentioned it. He never brought that fact up to me (which why you seem to have some information that I don't). He's offered to remove my 17 photos from the movie tonight once he gets home from work. He'll redo his movie, my copyright will no longer be violated, everyone wins.

Sometimes I wish I had his disposition, but no, I'm not him. He lives a few houses over, which translates to about 3 miles away out here. I suggested he sign up to MeFi and he avenged that by recommending his ISP to me, so it looks like we're about even as far as mutually-inflicted damage. I am in at least one photo and I've taken at least one or two or maybe more of the photos in the video.

For the use of the intellectual property in question my reasonable and affordable licensing fee schedule is as follows, and should be satisfied completely within a calendar month starting on todays date:

1) Call your mom. (Or suitable replacement, as needed.)

2) Hug the next person you see. If you don't want to hug them because they're a grody homeless person and they need a shower and/or clean clothes then make sure you help them obtain such, if needed.

3) Make brownies, cookies, cake AND/OR pie. If you can't cook, have someone who can help you. Share them with your friends and neighbors.

4) Wear a silly hat. Sing "I am a Little Teapot". Outside.

5) Offer a sincere compliment to someone.

6) Let someone "cut in line" or "offer up a seat" wherever suitable at least a dozen times.

7) Try out a new hobby or skill for a month. It can be inexpensive. Say, sketching or knitting. Juggling. Whittling. Baking cookies. Papermaking or bookbinding. Kitemaking.

8) See if there's anything that your local library needs that you might be able to provide. If not, donate something.
