Hey, as long as we're talking about yes-on-8, here's a letter I found on my doorstep (along with our No on 8 sign) when I got back from trick-or-treating with my kids:

Hi neighbor,

We live @ [redacted] & our next door neighbor came by to tell us our No on 8 sign was missing.

They told us their sign was knocked down.

I decided to check other houses with signs & saw yours missing, too. It was in your trash can. I pulled it out & placed it at your front door.

Pretty outrageous that some parent or teen who came to our doors for candy had the audacity to steal our signs. We still have not found our sign.

Thought you would like to know why your sign is at your front door.

As I said to them via a note in return, my frustration with someone throwing our sign in the trash was more than offset by knowing we have good neighbors looking out for us.

Oh, and within 24 hours, they had a new sign, and suddenly many of their neighbors had put up signs as well.

You know, I grew up in California and my family is still there, although this was the first year I didn't vote in that state. I would not have voted for Prop 8, fwiw.

But I don't get the hate thing, the general punch-them-in-the-genitals attitude. I don't get it across the board (by that I mean not just on Prop 8 but in general). As much as we may disagree with the outcome, the state's voters got what they wanted. The majority of them are those who would vote for Prop 8, and their voice was heard. The power of democracy flourished there. And so our response is one of hate?

Call me what you will, but that seems a bit hypocritical in a thread about hugs in a time of change.

I'd humbly suggest the higher and more productive response should be one of "we didn't work hard enough and need to work harder next time around to convince those who think otherwise." Or, as a better man than me once said:

There are still ballots to be counted for Prop 8, from the mail & the 5% unreported districts, which might be urban areas, which might lean against it.

The polling was against it by 5-10%, so I'm surprised & disappointed at the numbers right now, but that might be temporary.

I understand your point, and I would really, really like to be able to be so Buddha-like about it. But, yes, my first response is anger because "this is democracy" feels like such a white-washing of it.

What percentage of Californians are homosexual; 20% at most? I think that's a pretty high guesstimate, even with the gay-mecca aspect. Any vote on the matter is going to come down to what the heteros want to allow the homos to do. Since Prop 8 sets no limits whatsoever on what California heteros can do, it really smacks of oppression. From their perspective it's not "I don't want to be able to marry someone of my own gender"; it's "I don't want them to be able to marry eachother."

It's as within the spirit of democracy as the brunettes and blonds of the world deciding that redheads are an abomination and should be put to death.

The voters got what they wanted in Jim Crow laws, too, until they were struck down by federal law. I don't want to punch the people who voted "yes" but I do note that every 2 years more states pass these laws. There is a distinct trend-- much of the nation prefers a tyranny of the majority to equality, and that is very disturbing.

It was pretty shocking to see the prop 8 returns come in last night. Recent polling seemed to show a close race, but with the proposition being defeated. It's a huge setback, but it's not the end, by any means. Andrew Sullivan posted this reader's email yesterday on his blog, and I've been thinking about it a lot this morning:

"I voted here in San Francisco's Noe Valley neighborhood about two hours ago. It took about an hour to get through the line, and while standing there I was chatting with the 75-year-old retired cop in front of me, and the young 30-something gay couple in front of him, who had their two little girls in tow.

Everyone was in good spirits as the conversation moved from the Obama-McCain contest to the farce that is Sarah Palin, and then on to non-political matters, like the road work being done on the next block. The conversation between the cop and the couple started to get animated toward the end of our hour in line as the three men began to discuss the current football season, wagering bets for this weekend's games and making predictions for the Super Bowl.

And then, as we entered the firehouse that doubled as our polling place, as the couple and their daughters stepped out of line and up to the table to receive their ballots, I observed the cop in front of me. He opened his sample ballot, took out his pen, scribbled out his "yes" vote on Proposition 8, and filled in the ballot line for "no."

I don't think he knew that I observed him. And since it was such a private moment I held back my tears of joy and my overwhelming desire to pat him on the back and say "thank you, sir." Instead, I left the polling place muttering to myself those two words you have repeated over and over during this election cycle, Andrew:
