I enjoy it when celebrities join our site, because I like imagine that they occasionally name-drop us when they are talking to other famous people.

Sort of how someone who is star-struck will reference a famous person they've met, in my head, Adam Savage, Woz, Amanda, and Kaminsky are at parties with hundreds of A-list movie stars, music giants, well known artists and award-winning authors, and they're casually trying to slip in that they are a Mefite.

Just so everyone there can step back in awe and bask in the warmth of how cool it is to be in the presence of an actual legend.

I'm really glad you pruned it a bit, jess. As I mentioned in the thread I'm not a fan, but some of the comments were totally fucking embarassing.

Being said, a few of those comments look ugly, but in context I don't find anything offensive about them. The first one you listed that comes to mind is "she's hot. More like hott." Not only was it left by a female - not that that should matter, really - but it's actually on topic. The thread, more or less, is at least partially about Palmer's unattractiveness in the eyes of the record label, isn't it? While 'hott' isn't exactly the most eloquent way to approach it, the word gets the job done.

I don't know. I'm not looking to open a giant can of wormbeans and generally stay out of 'noyzone' discussions 'round here, but I am a little curious as to what's wrong with the 'hott' comment. Mmm-hmm.

A discussion of here appearance is relavent to the thread, because it was the subject of the thread, and I don't think it is inappropriate for people who find her attractive to say that, the label be damned, she's a good looking woman and deserves better treatment, whatever the fuck the labels thinks about her belly. And some people said that. And I think others were trying to say that and just got a little, well, fannish. She probably overlooked that because she gets it all the time. I often wonder what it is like to be a female singer and get those sort of comments with great frequency. I imagine it's complicated, because they are intended to be flattering, but come off as creepy, or thoughtless, or exclusively focused on appearance.

Yeah. There is some ugly stuff there. I'll admit that that's about the closest I've ever come to getting HURF DURF AESTHETIC RESPONSE INDUCER about the subject of an FPP, but I couldn't remember why that would be an important thing to share so I skipped it.

Seems like there needs to be some leeway to talk about appearance in a post whose subtext is whether a moving image is promotable or not on the basis of the physical beauty of its subject, but that would sort of argue against being gross and solipsistic about it, since that comes up short of a full thought and we aren't usually trying to be impressively stupid around here.

Most of the comments I pulled out weren't, to my mind, terribly obnoxious. The fact that they were over 10% of the thread just made it a little tiresome. Culminating in Smedleyman's ironic-to-make-a-point-yet-ick statement about his penis. As I frequently say "Oh please stop talking about your dicks already."

Mostly I agree with Your Time Machine Sucks. It's a thread about appearances, nominally, so that's got to be within bounds and yet saying "Gee I don't think her belly looks bad" is across some sort of line, to me, from "I don't care how hot she is. Shut up." and "that is one scary woman"

I feel the same way when people slag dudes in threads too, it just has a tendencey in my comfirmation-bias universe to not culminate in so many "This is how I feel about having sex with him..."

With that said, I'm ditching the Cooter Clock. It's into 2009 at this point. I think the point was made and I'm okay with where we're at vis a vis the "I'd hit it" levels on this site and I like my username.

After reading the post and seeing all of the terrific supportive gestures floating around online, I spent a little while feeling chuffed that a musician I enjoy, one with the type of distinctively esoteric approach to life that truly grooves me, was standing up against being labeled by her label and that others were willing to stand with her.

Then it gets topped by a personal response here, bringing it all delightfully full circle. I'm not good at that whole fangirl thing, but it's not often you're so well rewarded for investing in accessing someone else's ideas and creative output.

In my defense the personal thought processes and intent behind "I would lavish that belly with worshipful kisses." is a long, long hike away from "I want to ogle you like an object and/or put my penis in you."

And frankly objectification was the framed focus of the post. I suppose I could have chosen much dryer and more clinical words to disagree with the idea that Amanda was somehow not attractive or not (aesthetically) rock star material - but, damnit, we're talking about displays of sexuality, naughty underwear and live cabaret. We have passionate, descriptive words for a reason. I wasn't trying to be disrespectful - only affirming and supportive.

for myself, i saw the DD live before i really knew any of their music, have since bought one album out of, idunno, 3-4 available (including this new solo thingy), so i like their stuff enough, without being anywhere near a fanboy. others seem to have been more excited by this incident, and why should you begrudge them that?

Maybe it's because she's queer? I've certainly done my share of grousing about queer culture (frequently about the precise phenomenon that she vented about, but in more general terms), although I don't do it here because Metafilter doesn't need my help collecting strange notions about queers. Feeling differently about a dude invoking the elusive AFL in response to someone saying they think he sounds kind of jackass-y seems reasonable to me.

But even if that wasn't the case, I'd defend her because I have the fan-vapors! Make another reasoned and well-put observation using Mefi's own Amanda Palmer as an example and I'm going to have to ask you to step outside, Ubu.

With that said, I'm ditching the Cooter Clock. It's into 2009 at this point. I think the point was made and I'm okay with where we're at vis a vis the "I'd hit it" levels on this site and I like my username.

For a short while, I checked in once a week just to see how far it would go. I had a plan that if it hit day 29, I'd put up a fresh post to MeTa that said simply "I'd hit it." And then people would be all OH HELL TO THE NO and I'd be all THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID and then the Ewoks would rock out and Bo and Luke would jump the General Lee over Projects and cortex would do a Waylon Jennings schtick. I'm sure I am not the only member here who entertained such a notion.

But then I saw how quickly the reset button kept getting hit, sometimes ironically, more often not. I don't think it ever went more than two weeks, while I was following, if even that long.

So yeah, point clearly made.

It's vulgar and disrespectful to kick off a conversation with a woman by telling her that you're horny. He actually says that being horny puts him in Palmer's "demographic," as if all creative works by women have titillation as their primary objective. The most repugnant aspect of the comment is that it postdates Palmer's appearance in the thread, that it's actually addressed to her directly. Is it honestly okay in your social circle to speak to women that way? Would you be comfortable approaching a female artist and delivering that speech to her face?

cirocco loosely states my issue with that comment which made me go "ewww" to the point where I figured I had to 1) not moderate it and 2) take a walk. Whether someone (male OR female) is horny or not shouldn't really have to enter into a "hey how's it going" discussion with someone who is female OR male who is not someone you have a reasonable expectation of sex with.

Oh, I have a few ideas of what "crude" would look like, and it doesn't look like that comment. I'd give you an example, but -- boyzone? So let me not even go there. Anyway, being angry at actual crudity I would get. The comment in question just made me cringe; I think that elsewhere the sensation has been dubbed the "douchechill." The attempt at a suave come-on from Dude on the Internet to Midlist Rock Star, complete with negs and an admission that one is broke and jobless, is just...I mean, on the one hand, you can't blame a guy for trying, I guess, but on the other, I'm just kinda like...look away, for the love of God, look away. I guess it's kinda embarrassing insofar as the post's representative of the site, but it just made me really embarrassed for him. I ain't going nowhere. I said I wouldn't want to be part of a forum where remarks like Mike's pass by without a call-out, so I called it out. Now I get to stay. When you want a job done right, etc. BTW, I can't take full credit for "Drakkar Noir skeeve." It's a modified neologism based on the 80s Valley girl term "Aqua Velva geek."

RE: my weak "tossed-off" line: I said Mike's comment wasn't tossed off. If you must read something into the pun, and of course you must, the objective interpretation would be that he was refraining from tossing. That might explain why his eyes were bugging out and he was pounding on the table and whistling while watching a music video, I suppose.

Moreover, it wasn't I who dragged Mike's sexuality into the discussion; he broached the topic of his horniness himself, in no uncertain terms. If it's fine to crassly remark on Palmer's sex appeal because she presumably invites slobbering by performing in a bra, then shouldn't we also get to make crass remarks about said slobbering? What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. (Okay, this is starting to sound like what Philip K. Dick refers to in Valis as an "I didn't steal your horse and it was a lousy horse anyway," argument.)

The whole thread seemed to be based on the mistaken premise that Palmer's label had told her that she wasn't sexually attractive in their male eyes. In a rather transparent attempt to endear themselves to hot chix with bellies, oodles of MeMen felt the need to pipe up and tell us Palmer isn't chubby, she's chubby-worthy! What RoadRunner actually said was that her recent work wasn't marketable. Dear God, please let me not have to come back here to explain the difference.

Now, some of my best friends are mimes, but I hope this puts the conversation into some perspective. I've tried to give myself some time to breathe and think beyond my first emotional response to seeing my comment lumped in with some "ogle/hit it" comments, and here I am a few hours later, still angry.

I understand that, for a variety of reasons, male sexuality and its expressions are complicated phenomena that need to be handled with extreme care -- if not avoided outright -- here on MeFi and elsewhere, but I despair if we've reached a place where any expression of appreciation for beauty by a (presumed) heterosexual man is viewed as an oppressive "Male Gaze" moment.

I would have made the same comment if the issue was that RoadRunner didn't like the shirt Amanda Palmer was wearing: "Sorry, but her eyes and her mouth are way too beautiful for me to want spend even a moment looking away from them and down at her shirt."

Outside of the movie Deliverance it's not the case that saying you think someone has a beautiful mouth is unquestionably a disrespectful (when unsolicited) sexual signal. I also think that Elvis, Jim Morrison, my father (God rest his soul), and my daughter have beautiful eyes and beautiful mouths: All of them have features that call for my eyes to linger on them. If you view this as ogling or as a desire to have sex with these individuals on my part, you're the one with issues, not me.
