MeFi Winter CD Swap reminder!
Hey swappers, the deadline to mail your mixes is one week from today, January 20th.

If you can't mail out by next Monday, please let the rest of your swapset know. I am willing to pass on any messages as well.

My own mix is just about finished; as soon as it's unleashed upon my fakebandmates I'll post a link here to a digital copy (for anyone who didn't/couldn't participate but still sorta wants to).

I'm narrowing down tracks (iTunes says the mix currently has 1.5 hours) but should be done in a day or two, and then there will be burning and mailing.

Mine's been done for a while. As for the mailing... you can bet your ass it's going to be at the last minute. Perhaps even a day late.

What it is with me and the Post Office, I'm not sure, but there's definitely some kind of "disturbance in the force" issue. I don't know why I always put it off until the last minute, but I do. It's like I'm going to walk in and someone's going to, oh, I don't know... go postal.

I got one in the mail already.

Hey Carson, you wanna get together this weekend so I can give 'em to you? I got Friday off, too.

Also, I'm totally in that weird-ass moment where you start to second-guess every goddamn song you put on there, thinking "Is this pretentious, is this common, will this blow them away, will they hate me?"

It's usually one of those things that I assume is just part of the relationship process, but that it's happening now too is disconcerting.

IT'S NOT PERFECT!

I think the problem is that the Monkeyfilter mix I sent out a couple years ago was perfect, so perfect that everything else has seemed like ham-handed attempts to recreate the perfect mix, but since I can't use the same songs (that would be cheating, admitting defeat, sadness), something's always wrong. Like the second Monkeyfilter mix I made, which drifts too much into mid-tempo rock in the last third, because I didn't know how to break out of it.

And I made another mix that's got the best of 2008 on it, but it's too long for a CD. Maybe I'll be insane and steal DVDs from work and burn it to that. But then, the DVD would be mostly empty and wouldn't play in most players.

At least I made a pretty kickass gangster rap mix (though it could use some fiddling too, as I tried to make it too edifying, since I was giving it to my mother, who's recently decided that she likes rap music).

ARGH THE PRESSURE

I just got mine from Hoppytoad--DC represent! I really love that Chuck Brown song...I was lucky enough to interview him last year and asked him about it. Apparently he has always wanted to play that tune, and not just cuz he's the Godfather. Cool beans.

IT'S NOT PERFECT!

I realized early on that my music tastes are so deleterious that the closest I would ever come to perfect is 'perfectly awful'. So I embraced my suck and just put on some stuff I found fun.

Though I had to seriously debate about whether or not to include the Meow Mix theme.

"Unless you listen to vampire weekend in which case you are pure evil"

No, though one of my favorite new bands this year was Vampire Hands, a band that also has some funky Afro-pop instrumentation underpinning their indie rock. But they're awesome and Vampire Weekend is bland, and I think people might write them off due to the vampire name.

And my mix has to be perfect otherwise I can't mercilessly critique everyone else's. JEEZ

By the way, this is my best of '08 mix tapish thing (it'd fit on a 100 minute tape, but then the side swap would be weird, like those damn factory tapes that had like 20 minutes of silence on one end.)

Time to cut the interstitial gaps, then open up Amadeus and see if you can shave a couple seconds off of intros and outros to make "radio edits."
You know, it normally wouldn't be a problem for me up to about 3 months ago when I switched to Linux. Now Audacity only sort of works for me—it'll shave and fade tracks OK, but the exported mp3s (while in actuality retaining the correct length) show up with hugely expanded runtimes. So even though they're actually 3 or 4 seconds shorter than before, my burning software thinks they're 3 or 4 minutes longer and won't run the disk write.

No, I was a Windows user before, and utterly broke when that machine crapped out on me. So I went with the cheapest (free!) option on a homebuilt box. It's done me right so far, for the most part. I think part of my problem is that I keep trying to run KDE applications in a normal Ubuntu (opposed to Kubuntu) environment, and just don't have everything set up/downloaded/installed correctly.

bwaha!
I waked to the post office today to get the last 11 cents or so worth of stamps needed, but I realized at the last minute that I left my wallet at home.

Awkward.

Tomorrow, though. Mail will happen!
Burned, printed, cut-and-pasted, and I have the address labels ready to go on repurposed envelopes as soon as I get home. Hope nobody hates it because it went a bit more country-tinged than it began - I realised while making it that my music-listening has been split evenly between that and rap recently, which hurt my ears when combined.

The address I gave was my parents' because I wasn't sure which part of the country I'd be in by now, so I'm going to have to wait patiently until my mum visits in a few weeks to get mine, but she tells me there's a few waiting. Excitement!

OK, mailed! Well, mostly. klang and Ambrosia, I'm gonna wait until I see you again before you get a piece of me. The VERY NICE WOMAN at the Post Office just now refused to count my 'packages' as 'large envelopes' so I went way over budget. Let's do it soon.

US recipients keep an eye out the next 1 to 3 days. Past the edges of our coasts the USPS gives 'Varies' as the delivery time, so you, Swede, Kiwi, and Phillipino, might have to wait a while. Sorry! Also apologies for the Frankenvelope situation many of you will encounter. I usually reuse the envelopes from the previous swap, but this time there weren't enough to go around and I had to make some, uh, adjustments.

Meanwhile, I've received mixes from Katullus, Miss Otis' Egrets, thivaia, and not_on_display, which I can finally put on and enjoy.

80 minutes on the mark, I will expect! 79:59 will not do!!

It was classic last night. I'd spent hours tweaking the tracks (in a pretty good program I finally tracked down called ReZound) so that my music library told me the mix was at 1h20mins, but when I loaded everything into the burning software (after a six round bout with my old burning software) I was still 28 seconds over. At that point I was so fed up I just lopped the whole coda of one of the instrumental songs right off, didn't give it a second look (heh) and set to burning. So I don't know exactly how long it is, but it's pretty damn close to 80 even. Which WILL do, TYVM.

Of course, now that they're safely in the mail and out of my control I realize that the entire second half of the mix is totally misguided (whereas before I was convinced it was salvaged and actually pretty good) and I'm prepared for the lambasting I deserve.

I mailed mine while listening to the radio playing a speech from the Inauguration at my local post office, which made me smile. I've been waiting to mail mine to listen to the mix I already received--I'll be doing that tomorrow because tonight is Inauguration with my man.

One of my recipients is local to me, so he should get his tomorrow. My Italian swap-partner should get his in 5-10 business days.

ATTENTION: grapefruitmoon does *not* suck for sending her CDs out late. I only mention this because mine are also going to slightly late-ish. And since she is awesome, and we can all agree that this minor infraction in no way reflects on her suckiness, I think we can all accept that by extension the fact that mine are also going to be a little bit behind the deadline should not reflect poorly on me...
Additional commentary: There wasn't a tracklist in the liner notes, just a long ramble commenting on how much I regretted burning the discs already and a bit about each track that I wrote as I listened the thing through. You can read it for yourself (not recommended) if you download the mix. Anyway, of all the frickin' artists to get pinged on a repeat, someone sent me an excellent mix that also featured a groovy Prince track. I mentioned upthread that I had to lop the end of a track (Tori Oshi) off to get everything to fit on the disc. Well, I guess I deleted that hacked file so the full track is included here. That brings this version to 1:20:28, not_on_display, so there! The more I look at this track list the more I realize that this is an insane jumble of songs with little to nothing in the coherence category save the mid-temposity and an uncanny self-awareness of how bad it is, but the more I listen to it the more I like it. I hope you like it too.

Today I got fantastic Cd's by Thivaia and Carbide. Much Obliged.

For reasons I cannot articulate properly, I did not send the track list nor made beautiful cd sleeves. What I did, was to make my cd a 1:01:15 long non-stop-mix of mainly instrumental tracks, which I really hope my bandmates enjoy.

The tracks are:

Toshack Highway -Harlem
One Dove - There Goes The Cure
William Orbit - Harry Flowers
David Bowie - Art Decade
Primal Scream - Inner Flight
KLF- The Lights Of Baton Rouge Pass By
Christian Kleine - H-Y
Opiate - Late
Slowdive - Erik's Song
Eric Satie - Deuxieme Gymnopedie
Aphex Twin - [z twig] aka [b+w stripes]
Sam Rosenthal - Jane
Skylab - Six Nine
Boards Of Canada - One Very Important Thought
Kraftwerk -Ohm Sweet Ohm

You can download the mix here.

Oh. my. god. Not only did misteraitch send us Cloetta Plopp x2 (om nom nom)*, but also his CD looks and feels like an LP, and furthermore it includes one song which I happened to be watching the Youtubevideo for over and over today before receiving the CD. WOO!

Thanks for the tracklist, carsonb. I smiled when I heard the Cher mixed in there with everything. Great music to drive to. And I knew barely any of the bands, but liked all of the songs.

Kattullus: I've only heard the first two songs on yours, and somehow they work well together and point to yours being a great rollercoaster ride.

Also can't wait to receive kerning's and Ambrosia Voyeur's mixes.

Oh, and one thing I should mention. The weeks' delay in sending out the finished mixes did allow me time to make nice covers.

Just got mine from Batmonkey. Mad crafty cover + THE GOATS. The freakin GOATS? Spirit of '96 for real. Awesome.

I also got a request from Indiebass for my mix when I mentioned it in an askme, and he linked me his friend's site the International Mixtape Project, which is just awesome and makes me want to do this year-round.

I also have an extra one if anyone wants it. Warning: it is as weird as the cover indicates.

klang, your mix was incredible. Mailing it out with mine took the sting offa subjecting our other swapset members to my abomination. How about a track list, though? Some of that stuff is so obscure Google doesn't even know about it (or I'm just kissing this guy). Frinstance, that Dudley Moore/Bedazzled track had me stumped for quite some time, and I can't place anything with no/low lyrics.

hey klang - I got your mix a couple of days ago. In the same package as carson's. Are you guys comparing notes or something? Haven't listened to it yet, in fact, I only barely managed to get into the envelope there was so much tape securing it. Carson mentions he received mine upthread, so hopefully you got your copy too.

I finally got to listen to yours this morning(no commute yesterday due to North Texas' complete inability to deal with ice of any kind), and while it's quite different than most of my collection, I like what I heard.
I've just managed to listen to the last of the 7 CDs I received.

These are the ones I know I have:
hoppytoad - Capitol mix! Heh. My favourite of the entire set was "Bullet and a Target". It's just short of earworm, which is perfect. I know I've heard it before but never had a chance to listen to it, say, five times in a row as I pleased. Must. Buy. Album.
Bigfoot Mandala - Plushly global, genre-busting mix that makes me want to find a soft-floored forest, where I would be inspired to alternately dance and ponder...and rock out. Intensely percussive. The Sandy Bull track nearly broke me. If I'd had any idea I was going to be dancing for damned near thirty minutes, I would have prepared more; some stretching, perhaps. Whew.
Empress Callipygos - Cleverly & joyously wrought. The axis of the theme is excellently cohesive without sounding same-y. Lots of timewarping, singing along, and finger-snapping. Great CD for the car.
defenestration - This mix had my brain traveling the gamut from California sunshine to the land of the midnight sun. Thoughtful while unexpectedly "boppy" in places, I think this is going to be a favourite wind-down disc from now on out.
Potomac Avenue - Somehow, I expected this to be more discordant than it was, which was a pleasant surprise (I say this as a fan of discordant music). Quirkily upbeat, exuberantly raw. It'll probably get abused as a house-cleaning CD again, but I'm also thinking it'll make a fine psych-up CD for going out.
The Ardship of Cambry - Insane mix. Seriously mad. Barmy. Bezoomny. In case I'm not making this clear, I mean as in "crazy". Japanese, cacophony, moodiness...don't take this the wrong way, but I think this is a great CD for activities involving floggers and thuddy things. Or encouraging a schizophrenic break. Either way. It made cleaning house unforgettable, that's for damned sure. Will play again!
Jacquilynne - okay, pretty sure I put the right name in the case ("Everything new is old again"), but let me know if I'm wrong. I love this mix. Wry and playful. Another one I'll definitely be playing again and again.

...I had to reconstruct a couple of those because I was a little too fast to recycle the envelopes. Please be gentle in correcting me if I got you mixed up with someone else.

I do not have CDs from the following, as far as I know:
klausness
czechmate
biblio

I'm deeply digging that so many of you enjoyed the packaging. After getting them all designed and printed, I had major help on construction from the fella (saintcynr). If anyone wants official follow-through instructions, I'll be posting 'em later this week. I think it's pretty easy to reconstruct, but I'm going to do it anyway and will link back here when I'm done. One of the most fun comp packages ever. I hope the mix held up to the promise of the packaging.

Potomac Avenue: !!! beyond delightful to have someone as excited to hear the Goats as I always am. There was a radio station in Dallas which played "Do the Digs Dug?" over and over in the summer of '92 and you can imagine how gratifying it was to buy the album and find out it was so much deeper than the single had promised.

I'm, um slightly late.... The mix is done, but I still need to finish the covers. I should be sending them off in a week or so. Sorry about the delay.

Listening to the collections that others sent me (all very good by the way), I had this sudden realization that most of my music was comparatively very angry and hostile.

So, uh... sorry about that. If it helps, there is a pretty good story behind most of the songs I chose.

Though in some cases, the story isn't much more than someone getting into my vehicle when one of the songs is playing, having them listen for a second or two, and then turn to me and cautiously reply: "Wow, your car must really hate you to shout at you like that."

Heh. Yeah, yours was pretty aggro, and between it and The Ardship's, I was totally taken back to my late-high-school, post-high-school time as an industrial fan (though yours had more nu-metal). I was, like, oh, shit, I think I drove, like, 200 miles to hear Hansel Und Gretyl around '99 or so! I met a chick there who I had sex with later!

quin - I think your mix scared my cat. He's been hiding under a bush and refuses to come in unless I turn the music off. It rocks pretty hard. Although I haven't finished listening to it yet, so maybe it ends up with Enya. Who knows?

batmonkey - I'm very curious to see your packaging. Can you put some pictures up somewhere?

Crap!

klang, you gave me an extra copy of your mix, so I brought it to the meetup last week and gave it to the first grabby-hands who wanted it. Today I wanted to rip it to the ipod (and totally recycle that Sparks tune for a friend) so I got out the other copy I had...which turned out to be blank! Ah, well, it shouldn't be too hard to reconstruct it, and I've been meaning to acquire a bunch of those albums anyway.

kerning, I got your mix and it looks great except for the big ass crack running out from the center hole of the disc. Another reconstruction project, yay!

Aside from these piddling troubles, this has been a great swap for me. Thank you all for participating, you're wonderful people with terrible taste in music. Muah!

PS -> If you haven't heard from someone in your swapset, and would like to report them as a low-life cod-swallowing moocher, shoot me an email. There's not a lot I can do except out them as such the next time we swap.

If anybody in my group got a bum CD, please let me know. Apparently my burner has gone on the fritz and I'm having it replaced. It may have been on the fritz for a while, so if I burned a bad one and sent it out, I'll be happy to replace it after the new burner comes in.

I've had a very long day and coming home to find that it arrived in the mail was very nice. I've started listening to it and will go to bed listening.

I got mine, klausness! Looks delicious. Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, though.

For those who requested it: (bad) Pics of the packaging in process - I'm sure you've seen this style a million times before, but it was my first time giving it a go. Fun to make, fun to fill, fun to send. They were put into black envelopes which were just big enough to hold the CDs.
