I just love sea kittens dipped in batter and fried. Add some tartar sauce and I'm in kitten heaven.

I love to eat sea kittens. But what about the fresh-water kittens? I like to eat them, too. Does no one, even PETA, think of the fresh-water kittens??? /false outrage

Anecdotally, my son used to especially like the sauteed baby octopi available at the local Chinese food buffets. A good part of his enjoyment was grossing out his sister by eating them in front of her; he's 11 and she's 10. Then, we watched a show on PBS about octopi and how smart they are. I can't remember the name of it, but it had to do with migration on an area that often was dry, and they had to find little hidey-holes of sea water. After that, he felt bad and hasn't had a taste for octopus, even when his sister dares him.

Personally, I like octopus sashimi when it's good and fresh, but I suppose I'm evil. Can't tolerate squid, but that may be an allergy or something.

I also tried to feed the boy oysters one time. He managed to choke one on a cracker with some cocktail sauce, but he wasn't a fan. Perhaps when he's old enough to have beer, too...

I'm one of those people. I'm also a vegetarian and yes, even dabble in veganism at times. I ridicule PETA because they turn far more people off from their cause than properly inform them with their aggressive tactics (which they are pretty damn proud of). Because they recruit celebrities who aren't really vegetarian, get caught eating at KFC or someplace shitty like that, and make the organization look really foolish. Oh, and they run campaigns that are sexist as hell and annoying to boot. Fuck PETA.

I hope your first comment was a joke.

It was from a MetaTalk post about in-jokes. Stynxno suggested that "the" is as much of an in-joke as anything else that didn't originate in MetaFilter, which then led to the becoming an in-joke.

(Also, my google-foo is strong today. I found that thread without knowing anything other than that people were talking about The.)

I know a couple of people that are pretty heavily into animal rights, and at least one person that used to actively work for a number of legit political action groups.

They hate PETA and think that they're ridiculous - especially the Sea Kitten campaign. That's some extra stupid shit. They also don't like how PETA will resort to sexual objectification of women to try to clumsily make a point.

PETA is a casebook study in missing the point.
