Question disappeared

I posted this question a little while ago. It's still there via direct link, and it's still there in my profile, but it's no longer listed on the main page.

(I suspect that with Murphy's Law the question will re-appear as soon as I click Post, and I will end up looking foolish, but what the heck..)

The main page is a little delayed. Wait one minute.

It's just showed up on the main page for me?
posted by Solomon at 1:54 PM on January 27, 2009

Around 25 questions appear to have been deleted today... most of them not deleted in the sense of having a reason attached by a mod.

I suspect something is up.

I'd bet it's a pb-tinkering-related burp, yeah. I can confirm that you're not hallucinating, anyway.

Oh, I see. "A little while" == 45 minutes.
posted by Plutor at 1:56 PM on January 27, 2009

FWIW, it looks like several more questions are now missing.
posted by jclovebrew at 1:56 PM on January 27, 2009

And now a bunch more or there. It's like a damn emotional see-saw of post corporeality!

Confirmed that there's some tooling going on on the front page of askme right now, so expect a bit of bumpiness.

Super minor bug: On the main metafilter page, if you're not logged in, you see an advertising link:

http://www.fmpub.net/about/

They don't seem to have an about page anymore, and it drops you to a 404.

Priorities being what they are I can't image this is that important to fix, and it's not like any members are going to care, but just figure I'd point it out.

Comments seem delayed too FWIW - I post a comment, I get back a page with an empty comment box but without my comment in the thread. A few minutes later (or if I preview a repost), there it is. Seems off from normal.
posted by GuyZero at 2:32 PM on January 27, 2009

The deleted posts script is completely freaking out on askme now, showing deleted posts that aren't actually deleted. I just figured it was something to do with some behind the scenes stuff since I didn't change anything with the script.

Or it was anything, looks like it works now.
posted by dead cousin ted at 2:39 PM on January 27, 2009

it was anyway

Whew. Thought it was just me.

Oh, poor Metafilter!

*pat pat*

Is there anything we can do to help? Should there be an official bug thread, or is an email better?

I don't see any question. What question? Do you guys hear that ringing?

"Open links in new windows" is also Fail.

how so waraw? Seems to be working fine for me. You might try resaving your prefs and see if your window preference is set.

I have a similar problem with posting comments. After posting, the page reloads and I'm redirected to the bottom of the page, but no comment appears. After logging out and back in, I can see that the comment posted correctly.
posted by chrisamiller at 4:24 PM on January 27, 2009

Ah, truly thou'rt made of win and gingerbread, pb, as that fixed the problem.

Same thing except I varied up the comment a little and got them both.
posted by waraw at 4:36 PM on January 27, 2009

There's been little jags of lag in stuff appearing, for admin actions as well (a delete takes a few seconds to take effect, ditto for a comment edit or removal). Pres. due to server load or something, but we'll keep an eye on it. For now, give things a minute and see if they do show up.

Maybe a moratorium on new AskMe's and the like until things have cleared up?
posted by turgid dahlia at 5:11 PM on January 27, 2009

My MyAsk preferences seem to have disappeared too. Is that waiting to be restored or do i need to set it up again myself?

Buggy-thing-techno-notice deal:

This question shows on the main page as having 3 answers (2 new) yet the actual page shows two total. I suspect this is some kind of bug possibly caused by the first answer (mine) stalling for an enormous amount of time before finally posting. The page never actually finished loading, so I reopened my browser rather than double post (I use no tech knowledge for my logic). The site often had a poop while trying to comment yesterday for me.

Instead, I seem to have made one post and one 'ghost' post...
posted by Brockles at 5:17 PM on January 27, 2009

(and I had the 'no post thing appearing deal. Restarting the browser sorted it. I'll time this one to see how long it takes to show up).

Oooh, I forgot small tags till now. Weeeeeeee!!!!
posted by Brockles at 5:20 PM on January 27, 2009

Instant. Bah. I appear to be no longer special.
posted by Brockles at 5:20 PM on January 27, 2009

Actually Brockles, there was a second comment after yours (which is now missing) that said something like "Brockles shoots... and scores!". I think the user was named "Bkln something" r "Brooklyn something". I wonder if that's where the mystery 3rd answer is coming from.
posted by jclovebrew at 5:33 PM on January 27, 2009

What jclovebrew said—probably a not-excluded-deleted-comments counter problem on the comment count bit of the AskMe front page.
posted by cortex (staff) at 5:44 PM on January 27, 2009

yep, that was it. counts should match now.
posted by pb (staff) at 5:52 PM on January 27, 2009

Abiezer, sorry about your MyAsk prefs. That's a new one to me.

I just tested by changing/saving my prefs and it all checks ok. Sounds like you'll have to rebuild.

Oh, good work, kids. Now, I have some washing up needs doing, and being as you were so quick to sort that one out, how's about getting on that next?

Cheers pb - not a big deal as I only had a few tags in there, but I do worry for the poor userbase who obviously be needing my wisdoms bad. It's me public service remit. Ahem.
posted by Abiezer at 7:03 PM on January 27, 2009

On checking it seems my list of tags was still there, just nothing was showing up - maybe it was just not showing those things from prior to the restore and my few areas of "expertise" are that obscure anyhow. So false alarm I think and apologies.

I still have the lag issue on comments occasionally, but now I just wait a while. I can be patient, no really I can.
posted by schyler523 at 8:01 PM on January 27, 2009

My current Ask problem is that if I go to Ask without logging out and logging back in, the new post/new comment count is at 0. I know that's not true because I can see new questions. I get the correct count when I log out and log back in.

I've had this problem several times since the injection and it started about the time the admins were fixing Ask as mentioned in this thread. If there's a better place to do a bug report, I'll be glad to submit it more formally.
posted by immlass at 9:20 PM on January 27, 2009

I see what you mean, immlass. Next time you see the "no questions or posts" message try reloading the page instead of logging out/back in. That sets the proper count for me anyway. We'll get this fixed up soon.
posted by pb (staff) at 10:27 PM on January 27, 2009

pb: counts should match now.

My activity page says that my recent post about the Reykjavík protests has 47 comments while in actuality has 45 (2 comments were deleted days ago). However, I noticed this before Friday, so it shouldn't have anything to do with the attack.
posted by Kattullus at 6:22 AM on January 28, 2009

I have the same issue as immlass. Go to AskMe initially and reports no new questions/comments though I see them on the front page. A refresh then gives me the proper count.

Same thing on the Recent Activity tab on MeFi. But, yes, it's always been like that.

pb, it's fixed now. Thank you very much.
posted by immlass at 10:38 AM on January 28, 2009

This is an open bug list?

I just left a comment on Runnin' with the Songsmith, & Recent Activity is saying "0 since your most recent comment... " but not showing my comment.

Gee, I hope it doesn't happen to this comment too.

This is an open bug list?

Well, there is this little problem of the MetaTalk favicon :)
posted by Chuckles at 3:32 PM on January 28, 2009

Pronoiac, confirmed and looking into it.

Chuckles, go here, hit Shift + Reload, and then hope your browser picks up the favicon. Forcing the browser to reload those is kind of a guessing game, so that's the best route I know of right now.
posted by pb (staff) at 3:38 PM on January 28, 2009

Gah, my browser is still fighting me.. Probably needs to be restarted, I guess. Thanks though! Really, I should have just checked to see that the favicon.ico file was present myself, sorry about that..
