LJ/MeFi active users? January 31, 2002 9:33 AM   Subscribe

crap! don't know if this goes under 'general:weblog' or 'metafilter:metafilter related'.

anyways, i'm one of those filthy, filthy livejournal users, and listed in my interests is 'metafilter'. out of the thousands of people who use lj, i've found there's a total of 8 people that share such an interest. but... i'm not sure if they're actually active members. so my question is... is there anyone here that IS both an active user of both mefi and lj, or do they cancel each other out?

Answer me this, jcterminal: why is it that LJ users think it's okay to display images that aren't on their own site? (E.g., you did an <img src> to an image that sits on notsosoft.com.)

I'm just curious why LJ culture thinks it's okay.

There's no metafilter/LJ separation. Mark Kraft from LJ posts here off and on, and he's like #2 at the company. Why didn't you post this on your livejournal, so other LJ users would see it? (how many will see it here?)

Active user of both. Never bothered to list metafilter among my interests, though. I do have the distinction of having been, for the better part of a year, the only LJ account out of almost half a million who lists either 'cavalier poets' or 'heroic fantasy' among his interests. Whoops, just checked, and I'm now sharing 'cavalier poets' with some marxist philosophy grad student.

You're right, the populations on LJ and MeFi are rather different. The modal LJ user, as can be easily gleaned from the stats page is a 16-year-old female. I would guess that the modal MeFi user is a 20's to early 30's male. I'm typical of neither population.

[going off to list 'metafilter' in interests, what the heck]

85 people on LJ that are 55 years old? I can't decide if thats creepy or not.

because they can? because it's the nature of the beast?

the difference between me and most people is, a) i gave credit, b) i will gladly, and quickly, take it down if asked too. i figure a few dozen k is worth any traffic i might send her way. but if she doesn't feel that way, i'll remove it, no prob.

as for why didn't i post this in my lj, simple, no one reads it. :D

if thats creepy or not

I say "not", what's wrong with older folks?

I just barely have one, mostly so that I can write notes in people's LJs berating them for stealing my images [credit or no, it's still bandwidth stealing], nothing personal jcterminal.

Hey, shut up, one of those users is my mom.

(Seriously. She doesn't maintain the journal, though; she just logs in to post responses on mine.)

Indeed. I like MetaFilter quite a bit. I even bought a MetaFilter TextAd. MetaFilter is a good thing and more LJers should read it.

Information is everything, and having access to good information gives you the basis for making informed decisions. As such, it's important to be tapped into the flow and know the pulse of what is going on out there in the wide world of weblogs - especially for me.

As for the demographics of LiveJournal, the average age of our users is actually 21.5 right now and getting older... it's just that 16 and 17 are the most common ages. Also, judging the age of users by seeing those who are 55 is kind of slanted - we probably have closer to 1000 users who are 55 or older. The oldest LiveJournal user I know of is in their nineties.
