The Boy Who Was Raised As A Dog, a book on dealing with child trauma was co-authored by Dr. Bruce Perry and Mefite Maias. Perry's clinical and research work -- the thing that the book is based on -- is the topic of Oprah Winfrey's show this coming Tuesday. Don't think Maias appears on the show, but presumably her sales should see an upturn. Congrats, Maias!

Doesn't really matter about the referrer code on this one, as it doesn't look like there are new copies available from Amazon (you don't get the kickback from used), but they'll still want to get it fixed.

Back in the early 90s when I worked in a generic mall bookstore in the midwest, we'd experience a regular phenomenon that went something like this:

Someone would call about a book or author we'd never been asked about before. ("Bridges of what county?") And then, in the space of fifteen minutes, we'd get a dozen more calls until we all knew EXACTLY what happened: Oprah had just featured the book on her show. By the time the next shipment arrived, the author would have an entire section devoted to him, and we'd spend the next year selling the book to every other customer who walked through the door.

Its a shame Oprah isn't the smartest of cookies. Her book recommendations are often awful. When she isn't promoting some silly-ass new-age psuedo-quantum-physics crap about how thinking positive will make the universe align to one's will, she's promoting a million little lies.

btw, Oprah's not going to be airing any false memoir stories again any time soon.

After Frey, she introduced serious fact checking/legal checking-- which is more than most publishers have done. The Holocaust one only appeared to have happened post-Frey-- he'd actually been on the show years before Frey and the fact checking would have caught him if he re-appeared, but others got him first.

About the newage stuff, well....
