Hi!!!!!!! I was so excited when I got my mefi mail invitation... and I ran straight to this thread, only to be let down... I just bought my tickets this morning to go back to the states for a week, so I definitely can't on the 12th.

Haha, love the crisis title. I feel honored by the invitation, but as last time, I can't make it. I'll be in Chicago during all of Semana Santa (visiting a friend) and that'll probably use up all of my traveling budget for the rest of the year. Malditos dólares caros!

I really miss Mexico City. One of the great cities of the world, in my opinion. I probably wont be back until December but I'll be sure to organize a meetup when I'm there.

No wish to derail but...does anyone know why Kong in Colonia Roma is closing? That was unfortunate to hear about.

Me, I can make any of those dates. Working early morning shifts, which means only that I can't stay too late. Or, rather, I shouldn't stay too late but might anyway and just suffer the consequences.

This meetup attempt seems to be veering off the tracks quite badly, with date changes, Semana Santa and now me ill. Is everyone free for Friday, 08 May? I'd suggest next Friday, but the long week-end will probably play havoc with our plans again.

Well...i don't think so!

Actually, what I had was High Altitude Pulmonary Edema. Really not fun at all. I went camping, as I do every year, at ~3000 metres above sea level and for some unknown reason, I got HAPE this time. I did have a terrible cold before I left, but the doctor says that w ould not cause the edema all by itself.

I was in the hospital for five days, tied to an oxygen mask around the clock, and confined to my bed at home for five more. They gave me quite the cocktail: antibiotics, cortisone (which I'm still on), antiacids, diuretics, etc. The ER people say that I was in very bad shape when I stumbled in, with purple fingers and lips, and with oxygen saturation at 73%, which is, apparently, "very fucking low".

I'm fine now, but the pig bug symptoms do sound eerily familiar...the only thing I never had was a fever. At least, not while in the hospital.

I can't help wondering if I had this thing, or something similar, and that caused the HAPE. Even before the outbreak I was scouring the literature on edema to find an answer. It just didn't make sense...I mean, I live in Polanco now, but I lived the previous 25 years above 2700 and 2900 metres. If I had a genetic predisposition, it would have shown up ages ago.

I guess I'll never know for sure, but the coincidence seems a bit much.

About this meet-up, the Universe is clearly conspiring against us. Shall we suspend plans until the flu settles down?

Yeah man, glad you're OK. It's probably best to call off the meetup for now. Hopefully this'll all pass quickly. Are you guys holding up OK? I just got back from Superama (packed) and people appear to be stockpiling stuff: Bleach, tortillas, bread, canned tuna. (Interestingly the water-packed tuna is almost completely sold out, while oil-packed is plentiful. It's my preference too, but I didn't know most people shared it.)

Two friends of mine have had their bar closed entirely and their restaurant ordered to shut its doors by 6 p.m. daily through May 4. I can't find a pharmacy where they're not sold out of surgical masks. A lot of people on the street just look ... scared. Who knows what will happen if they shut down the metro.

And then the freakin' quake -- as if we didn't have enough to deal with?

I'd love to hear your experiences. (And personally I'd rather do it here, rather than the thread on the blue which has some good stuff admittedly -- but also plenty of annoying windbags and petty name-calling that's really off-putting to someone who's living this madness.)

Sounds brutal Cobalt, glad you pulled through.

Yeah, honestly, the quake freaked me out more than the flu scare. It's a bit unsettling when your coffee begins to splash out of its cup for no apparent reason.

Laying low, taking vitamins, fortunately working from home these days, also unable to find a mouth cover as well. I spent saturday visiting every farmacia between Roma and Polanco and they were all sold out. And I can't seem to stop at a traffic light where the army is handing out the masks.

There was also a shootout in front of my building a few weeks ago!

These are certainly interesting times in the D.F.

Well, let's wait out this latest drama and hopefully one day soon toast to our impeccable survival skills.

I'm bummed about the cancellation of the meetup, but well, this flu thing is so inconvenient on so many levels.

I'm a school teacher, so I've been off work since Friday and I won't go back until Wednesday the 6th. I have an optional meeting at school tomorrow

I live downtown, and here things are pretty quiet. I went to the ISSTE supermarket, and it was pretty relaxed. There are a lot less people on the streets, and only about half of them have masks on. I don't know where you could get more masks, they are all sold out, it seems.

I've heard everything at this point - conspiracy theories, people saying this is a cover-up for something else (what???) and all kinds of other weird things. I have some friends who STILL insist that this is all BS and that its just an exaggeration, I only shrug (virtually) and tell them I hope they´re right.

I'm not sick, although I have caught myself over the course of the past few days and thought "I have a headache. Omigod, does that mean... ??? " or "Hmm ... I woke up a little congested.. do I have it...???

But I'm pretty sure I'm fine. Also, I wasn't into Twitter before, but I am ALL OVER THAT SH#T now. I find it fascinating the part that technology plays in the sharing of this kind of situation, and how this kind of situation encourages technology.

Crazy shootout, lovejones. Venezuelan woman and Cuban man? About six months ago a lawyer was ambushed and shot dead about two blocks from my house and some people were a little freaked out. Interesting times, indeed.

Though the quake was more amusing to me than anything, having grown up in quakeland north. It did mean a sudden flurry of work activity of course -- on top of the 1 million things I was already juggling.

I've heard the conspiracy theories too. That it's a ploy that has to do with the July elections. That the government is trying to distract from rising prices for some consumer goods. Even that the narcos have hired themselves a bio-terrorist and this is the result since they failed to raise a big stir when they downed the plane last November. Yikes.

I also get the OHMYGOD ASNEEZE AMIDYING?@@!!!!!! moments. They usually pass pretty quickly.

Yesterday at work, I started feeling really dizzy and I thought, "fuuuuck, I've got the flu". Then I realized it was a quake.

I live near the museum zone in Chapultepec and it was surreal to see it almost empty this past Sunday. Nobody crossing Reforma a la kamikaze, no street vendors. But there was a Turibús packed with tourists on its second deck, most of them using masks.

A doctor in the family gave us a pack of facemasks, much better than the regular blue ones, and a friend gave us a gas mask like this one. I don't know if I'll use it.

I'm also using Twitter a lot. It was super fun yesterday, but it made me a bit paranoid too.
