Fresh? Just posted? Moments ago? What's the difference?

While checking out my recent activity (you know, like you do obsessively every time you post something to MeFi), I noticed that comments posted within the last minute each had different timestamps. They were (newest first): "Moments ago," "Just posted," and "Fresh" (after fresh was "1 minute ago"). Is there any difference between these, or are they arbitrary?

I believe those three descriptions are tossed out at random for less-than-one-minute-old comments, yeah. Totally arbitrary.

And how come a comment from six months doesn't show up as "stale" ?

Can we get "Phunky Phresh" in there somehow? I'd pay another $5 for that.

Sorry, my google fu failed me. Thanks for the explanation!

Previously, with the same first-comment answer.

This is a search that should be automatically performed before claiming that a post or reply is "fresh".

The posts are also exciting, so exciting to me, yeah yeah.

I'd like to see Fresh, Just Posted and Moments Ago all replaced with BAM! It would also be nice if Emeril's voice saying "Bam!" could sound off when you hit the Post Comment button. Is this OK mods Y/N?

Also, for comments more than 30 days old should say,

"yo' comment so old, I told it to act its age and the bitch died!"

This is the wrongest idea in the long and glorious history of posting about wrong ideas on Metatalk. I salute you, MStPT.

Fresh is one of my favourite albums.

Could one of you please write a Greasemonkey script that automatically blocks all comments marked "Fresh"? I've got enough freshness in my life.
posted by jbickers at 12:29 PM on April 24, 2009

What if your comment has that "less than fresh" feeling?
posted by backseatpilot at 12:36 PM on April 24, 2009 [1 favorite]

Only comments that pass the "smell test" can be certified as Fresh.

I'd like to replace "Just Posted" with "So Nu?".

Freshen up this drink for me, please?

Can someone please write a Greasemonkey script that can a) recognize the snarkiness of a just-posted comment, thereby b) anticipating mad favorites for said comment, thereby c) filter out all other comments and in the process of doing a, b, and c, d) render the time stamp to say OH SNAP!

I would heart you forever, I would.

I was hoping for a Kool-Aid-esque "OH YEAH!!!".

Next April 1st should be the Mega-Meta-Soundboard day. Oh yeah.

Dear AskMe: I accidentally left my comment out on the counter overnight. It still smells OK, but is it safe to post?

God that would be awesome. We could include Macho Man Randy Savage's version of "Oh yeah!" to boot.

STOP WATCHING ME!!
posted by Bango Skank at 1:37 PM on April 24, 2009

Different embedded sounds for flagging, favouriting, posting... the site would be a total fracking mess. But now the real MetaFilter seems like a pale shadow in comparison to my visions.

And how about some little reminders every once in a while, such as, "You're beautiful and highly employable." Is this too much to ask? Really? You never tell me I'm beautiful anymore.
posted by heyho at 1:52 PM on April 24, 2009

Sure, heyho. There could even be a button next to your profile name for when you're feeling down, labelled ":(". Press it, and Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" begins playing.

STOP WATCHING ME!!

Fine!

*dismantles hidden web-cam*

*tells private investigator to discontinue surveillance*

*calls off security van from across street*

*fires psychic scrying team*

*retasks the three high resolution satellites current monitoring duties*

Feel better? No! You don't. Now your lonely, aren't you? Well, that's what you get.

Man, I always hated the word "users" when I was working at the computer lab as a student. It made me feel like we were in a drug ward and we were all enablers.

That's too funny. I considered putting together a similar list, and the only one I could come up with that made me happy was "Blink and you'd miss it".

There are some Legal Seafoods ads on the T about their fish being "fresh" which are just pictures of fish saying rude things. My favorite is the fish who says "Man! You smell like carp!"

Carp carp carp.
