looking for a previous thread on getting high May 10, 2009 10:00 PM   Subscribe

Trying to locate a previous metafilter thread on getting high, specifically with legal herbs. I'm looking for it because there is a link within to some online herbal place (with shaman in the name) that got their start trying to reduce pain from braces. My kid is 12, just got braces, and is having a hard time. If this should be askmefi then please delete, sorry and thanks.

Was the original thread deleted?

perhaps you were thinking of this askme about relieving pain caused by dental braces?
posted by boo_radley at 10:31 PM on May 10, 2009 [2 favorites]

When I was 24 and had braces that hurt like a MF, I alternated ibuprofen and tylenol, dosage figured out by coworkers who were an MD and a pharmacist to not hurt my liver. That worked just fine. Sorry your boy is hurting. Make sure to keep wax for the wire ouchies.

I'm fine with whatever, but not at the age of 12. When I had my braces, the OTC pharmaceuticals worked fine, and I was experienced with the alternatives.

Sorry if I sound preachy, but he's gonna be ok.

Can't you just feed him corn liquor and codeine like a normal parent?

Had you not included the "my kid is 12" sentence, I think people would be more willing to help. As is, this is an odd request for many. I only drug kids under 10. Sorry, I can't be a part of this.

Here's one that recommends cloves and other stuff.

But every kid who has ever been someone's 12-year-old with new braces has had a hard time, and everyone says the best results come from OTC pain killers (aspirin, etc.) and wax (to prevent lip damage).

In addition, you could mix up some of your own grandmother's special pain remedy and be very serious about it, whisper to the kid that this remedy probably wouldn't be allowed these days, and make sure that it smells and tastes like it would be powerful. Maybe clove oil and some other harmless stuff. And offer to massage it into the gums if that helps.

If you get rid of the physical pain, he's just gonna fixate on the social pain of being a 12-year-old with braces, and fake weed isn't going to make him cool.

ABOVE THE INFLUENCE!

In the old days, you just fed the kid laudanum. Can't you do that?

(I hear it also does wonders getting little kids to shut up so you can sleep.)

Don't know the thread you're talking about, but you may be trying to think of Basement Shaman. Also clove oil should be worth a try.

OK, I give up. Try the "Aside from cannibas, which herbs induce a high?" thread. But I really don't think you should be getting your 12-year-old high, even in the name of reducing the agony of brace face, if for no other reason than that the local police (who, to make things worse, are probably Mormon) would come down on your ass like a ton of temple bricks and take your kid away from you (or take you out of your own home).

If that's any comfort to you, Aspirin's active ingredient was discovered in the bark of a willow tree by a Church of England rector.

If your child is experiencing pain more severe than normal, OTC, child pain-relievers, then you need to go back to the orthodontist.

This would have gone over well on AskMe. When I was a teenager the only thing my daddy did for me was give me a carton of cigarettes and cough out, "Smoke'm up, Johnnie." I plan on doing the same for my child, but I think I'll go with the longer burning Native Spirit cigarettes rather than the Pall Mall's he favored. Does anyone know where I can find them cheap?
posted by mrmojoflying at 4:30 AM on May 11, 2009

What about one of the oral gels with benzocaine in it? That along with wax and ibuprofen and/or acetaminophen as suggested above should help. If the kid is really in agony, see if the orthodontist will write a script for Tylenol #3 (I doubt he or she will).

I second the opinion about CPS taking your child away if you use anything not prescribed by a doctor for your child to get your kid high, regardless of how legal you think it is.

If you misspoke, and are just looking for something to rub on his gums, I apologize for the preachyness. I still think benzocaine will work better than some herbal remedy.

This reminds me: my 7 year old is having trouble making a good blunt. In my day, we used joints or pipes, so I'm not particularly good at it myself. Anyone have any tips?

....Everyone, mecran01 is not asking to locate the thread because she wants to get her kid high. She is asking to locate the thread because at some point in the thread, someone in there posted a link to an online store that sold herbs and herbal remedies for things. And she is looking for the store, NOT for "a way to get my kid high."

This is kind of like how in one of the FPP threads about STAR TREK, someone posted a link to the fanvid made up with Kirk and Spock to the tune of NIN "Closer." Theoretically someone may want to find that NIN spoof vid, and would ask about that thread -- not because they wanted STar Trek info, but becasue they wanted to find that fanvid. This is the same deal.

Sheesh.

EC: The post was badly worded. I gave an appropriate answer, a warning in case the poster really is thinking about getting his kid high and some silliness, because this is MeTa.

In askme, a badly worded question has to be worked around. Here in MeTa, snark is allowed, if not actively encouraged.

AskMe: What's a good herbal remedy for crooked teeth?
posted by DU at 6:32 AM on May 11, 2009

EC: this assumes that the site was actually telling the truth when it talked about the application of its products to reducing pain from braces.

I don't know how familiar you are with online "legal highs" shops, but I can assure you that this is a very big assumption.

I put "legal highs" in scare-quotes because I've seen plenty of these sites advertise products as legal, when I know that they're not, or are legal only in some countries. There is not a high degree of honesty in this particular market, and mecran01 could be taking considerable risks, both legal and medical, in purchasing anything from such a store.

A couple weeks ago I smoked some legal "smoking herbs" a friend had. It didn't make me laugh, it didn't make me happy, it didn't even make me hungry- it just made me feel really high and creepy. I don't recommend it.

Hmmm... Just to piggy-back: I'm not feeling touchy-feely enough and I'm certainly not dancing enough. I wonder if there's a solution?

What about one of the oral gels with benzocaine in it?

I never had braces, but I've had a lot of dental issues over the years, and I can attest that most tooth pain can be beaten by ibuprofen, benzocaine, an unwillingness to admit that you are suffering, and on the weekends, booze.

In my experience, the first two are the most useful, the last two are the most commonly used.

I don't understand why taking biochemically-active herbs to reduce pain is "better" than taking biochemically-active drugs to reduce pain.

Seriously, I've never gotten that--the people who say "I'm not going to use drugs to treat my depression; I'm going to take St. John's Wort!" or "No aspirin for me--I'm drinking willow-bark tea!" seem to be laboring under some kind of delusion that medicinal herbs and medicinal drugs don't work in the exact same way, through biochemical reactions in the body.

(Note: People who say "When choosing a headache drug, I prefer willow-bark tea to aspirin because I want to avoid {additive}" or similar are obviously making sense, but I almost never encounter that.)

So short answer, why not give your child the medications the orthodontist prescribes, rather than following the recommendations of some random drug-addled hippie on the Internet?

(Note: Is herself a random drug-addled hippie on the Internet, so keenly feels the irony of all this.)

In answer to earlier questions:

Sorry, my kid was crying last night at 11pm and couldn't sleep, and I was looking for something topical and stronger than anbusol, not trying to shoot him full of opium. I gave him ibuprofen, and had him do a saline rinse, and he nodded off eventually.

What I was trying to ask as well, was whether the original thread had been deleted, so I could quit looking for it.

My parents were fond of the "We'll give you something to cry about," regimen of pain control, but YMMV.

Just so you know I'm not 100% asshole, I went through what your kid is going through now back when I had braces and it sucked, and the orthodontist didn't take it seriously. Just make sure the kid wears the retainer.

That legal high stuff is total bullshit, even though I understand your concern. He really would be better off with a bourbon mouthwash.
