Are we sure that's not a fake fake?

Sweet! Congrats fake.

While we're lauding fake, I would also like to give him props for helping me fix my LCD monitor on AskMefi. Not many posters are capable of or willing to provide such clear, thorough answers.

I heard his next project was trying to win a book scanner by making a laser cutter.

Congratulations! My husband and I plan on using the tutorial for the book scanner; I love e-books and he loves building things. I got so excited when I saw the link from MeFi.

I've just read that thread for the first time, and the civil discussion between fake and toekneesan is Metafilter at its very best.

The book scanner is fabulous, and I am humbled by your expertise--even your thank you to the sponsors is completely over my head. fake, please consider a post on computational photography soon.

That is just the coolest thing. Bravo, fake.

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of spending the entire day readying my workshop for this crazy new tool. Seriously, I can hardly believe that my project took the grand prize.

The MeFi discussion was all kinds of good. I'm working on a new guide as a result. Nattie, be sure to check the comments at instructables for some smart improvements to the original plans.

I will do a post on computational photography -- I have a surprise coming up in the next month that will set the stage for it.

I am totally humbled by all this. Thanks, all.

Man, I don't even know what computational photography is* but I love it.

* if it's that thing that google does with their book scanner where they project a known-grid onto the surface and photograph it with UV-sensitive cameras and then use the resulting deformation map as a way to transform the actual picture taken seconds later.... awesome.

Congrats fake. You totally deserve it, though I'm still hugely envious.

It's probably for the best that I don't have anything like that though. I'm sure I would only end up using it for evil.

Wait, would be building a rocket powered dog walker be considered evil?

Just imagine how it had been if it was Mefi's Own (tm) Jagged Glass Dildo or If I Had an Anus.

If anyone is still reading this thread, and thinking about building one of these things, come join us at diybookscanner.org -- the instructables comment system is really overloaded.
