Where do I put this to discuss it? February 8, 2002 9:12 PM   Subscribe

I would like to talk about the opening ceremonies of the Salt Lake City Olympic Games. Is it more appropriate on MetaFilter or MetaTalk, or not?

No, not really, except general news website stuff, hence the hesitation. I'd just like to get an idea of what everyone thought of the ceremony, what went well, what could be improved, etc.

It's definitely not appropriate for MetaTalk. Metatalk is really just a place to discuss how things on MetaFilter are going--ettiquette, bugs, suggestions for improvements, etc. It's also a place for talk of other weblogs, and how they might relate to Metafilter.

Now, whether it's appropriate for Metafilter is another subject. First, there needs to be a link to somewhere on the web. The easy thing to do is to link to NBC's Olympics page, or the IOC home page or something, but that doesn't really jive with what Metafilter is about. One of the main guidelines to posting on Metafilter requires that the link be "something most people haven't seen before". NBC's site is very well-traveled and, well, kinda boring.

Take a look at liam's Olympic mascot/logo link. There's something unique--a catalog of the various logos, mascots and torches from all the past Olympics. It does (at least) three things very well:

1. It's truly web-based. Talking about something on TV is always difficult, since we don't have it on hand to refer to. Plus, this really isn't a site to discuss television, per se.

2. It gives us all a frame of reference. We're all seeing the same site and, again, we all have it on hand to reference. It also gives a focus to the discussion--the specific logos.

Anyway, I babble. I hope that helps. I don't want to say "don't make a post about the opening ceremonies", but unless you're careful and do a little legwork, you're likely to stray outside the guidelines that Matt has established.

Neither! Don’t link it! MetaFilter is not a bulletin board system! Gah!

The opening ceremonies of the Olympics may be interesting to some (not me), but most people know about it. Therefore, it doesn’t fit the baseline requirements for a good MetaFilter link.

This site is not the place for “chatting”. It’s just not built for it.
