MeFi meme index? July 15, 2009 11:39 AM   Subscribe

Is there an index of MeFi memes? I'm pretty new here (so new I'm not sure whether this should go in MeTa or AskMe), but there are a lot of memes I don't quite understand. Has anyone ever created a list of the more popular MeFi memes with explanations and possible origins? I'd love to see one.

The official unofficial mefi wiki has a page dedicated to In Jokes, which is probably your best bet.

Also, mathowie's comment about why he doesn't like Mefi's in-jokes (linked in the wiki) is worth reading.

Well if no one else will, I'll up the noise to signal ratio:

What about....
Elephant pissing, robot maids cannot clean linoleum, taglines, dtmfa, keyboard clacking, campbell's vegetable soup, warholics, next up:, needs more (noun), <>, smalltext, alphabet threads, server fan death, domesticated wheat, Kim Jong-Il is your facebook friend, best of the web, MARQUEE TAG, I expected (noun), cat-scan, [citation needed], gigfilter, error code 508 waldo not found, achewood is not funny, what is this where is my hat i am elderly, there is spumoni in the station, Why no?, and, let's not forget that one that blanketed the site back in 2000, "was this submitted properly someone reply"

I think the HURF DURF entry should probably mention that it's a Something Awful import.
posted by empath at 4:06 PM on July 15, 2009

On Something Awful, Hurf Durf (also sometimes Hurf Blurf or Hurfing and Blurfing) is just a wildcard substitute for any amount of pretentious speechifying on a topic.

I think mathowie has softened his attitude toward injokes as time has gone on (that comment linked to on the wiki is from 7 years ago). I mean, he's making t-shirts of them now.

Secretly I hope that making those injoke t-shirts is slowly killing him inside, but somehow I doubt it :p.

Ooh, ooh, I can play too!

My favorite is "I actually know far more about this subject than I think you can imagine" from this thread. It doesn't seem to have gotten the traction I really think it deserves.

Aw, nice! I think that's lovely.

Also, while I'm on the subject of "good/pleasant things Jessamyn has done", thanks for not saying "Good God you're irritating" when I ask potentially ridiculous questions about etiquette &c. (also one time I MeFi Mailed -- if that is indeed the correct punctuation, about which I am unsure -- her with a mod questions and I learned later in MetaTalk that she doesn't like that so apologies). Hugs for everyone!

I know it's from 2002, but mathowie was right in 2002. As the wiki says, "Fresh, original wit is probably a better way to contribute."
