Why is this a different number than the party line?
posted by filthy light thief at 3:16 PM on July 22, 2009

Because I had nothing to do with the party line and the number I gave above records directly to mp3?

Is there a deadline?
posted by dersins at 4:07 PM on July 22, 2009

I ask because maybe IRFH can call in after he's paroled...

I would say the deadline is a week from today.

From the partyline page: The partyline and voicemail recordings are now automatically posted to the web at mefiphone.inactivex.net. The website automatically adds new recordings every 5-10 minutes.

/partyline has 115 recordings, and /voicemail has 40 messages. Recorded in a lifelike 8 kbps, you (Matt) might want higher quality recordings.

I dunno, Faint of Butt's recitation of Jabberwocky is pretty awesome.

/voicemail

The world requires remixes!
posted by Sys Rq at 5:41 PM on July 22, 2009 [1 favorite]

Wow. /voicemail is being called by debt collections agencies, too. And some folks are trying to make reservations, or are looking for used cars, or valid phone numbers.

But fear not! There are mefite recordings, too. Here's one especially for remixers, and here's one who "can't even get a third of a movement in."

And Mom is giving us a pony, so it's all okay.

1, 2, and 3 were the best party line voice mails. Ahh, memories.

But I'm in prison!

The pruno at the prison meetup was excellent though. We stole some food colouring from the kitchen and dyed it Metafilter Blue.

I'm hoping my sight will have returned in time for the 20th anniversary meetup. I'm also hoping to be paroled before that date.

Wouldn't we need to remember things to have remembrances? (Did you see those photos?)

Can those of us who have telephone phobias write in and have someone else read it?

Brandon Blatcher : If you remember a party then you weren't having fun.

I totally agree; I can't count the number of times I've woken up sticky, with a splitting headache, mostly naked, and no idea where I was, holding a gun in one hand and an empty bottle in the other, so I turned to one of the half dozen women passed out around me wearing clown makeup and asked the important questions like "why is that building over there on fire?" followed up with "were we at a party or something?"

Unfortunately, then you have that awkward moment of realizing that you've got her badge electric taped to your thigh, and having to give it back to her along with her sidearm and handcuffs.

But that's when you look around and say to yourself, "This is exactly why we need to have more meetups at retirement home mixers! These people are crazy!" and you dig out your wallet so you can find out your name and address to go home and sleep the rest of it off.

Man, if I had a nickel...

Philly: I believe we need to recreate the group recitation of 'how is babby formed' and 'the best of sixcolors' for the rest of the community. Where/when can we gather to do this?

My lame memory: waking up in the middle of the night on the 18th, checking Metafilter, and remembering that I had ran into a MeFite earlier that day in Chicago. Didn't even realize it. And I wasn't able to go to the meet up.

Freaky.

8dot3, I agree. The zombielike drone of how is babby formed is NEEDED for posterity. Hmmm... Maybe we can all call in, recite it, and the mods can splice us all together.

The thing about the 8kbps mp3s is that telephone audio doesn't contain a lot of information in the first place. The bitrate of an uncompressed phone call is 64 kbps, so the compression ratio of my mp3s is 8:1. The audio from a CD, on the other hand, has a bitrate of approximately 1400 kbps; making the compression ratio between it and a 192kbps mp3 about 7:1.

[/indignant audio nerd mode]
*ahem*

That said, paaaaaaaaaaarty on! Also, if anyone actually wants the non-compressed versions of any of my (unauthorized, uncut, and non-mathowie-related ;)) mp3s, send me a MeMail and I'll send them your way.
