Mysterious package arrives...thank you secret quonsar!

I'm mostly a lurker, so starting a metatalk thread is a little scary, but here goes...

Thank you secret quonsar! What a great book. Even the table of contents is a work of art. I'm looking forward to exploring the rest of it.

It was a fabulous feeling: a package arrives. I try to remember if I've ordered something. Hmmm...I don't recall. Wait...it's my secret quonsar gift! [big smile] I was totally not expecting to receive anything this soon. Hooray secret quonsar! Thank you mrbill!

Let's dedicate this thread to guessing what you received. I'll start. Was it a waffle iron?

Hmm. I'm torn. It's a Christmas present and you opened it before Christmas. Bad form. But it's also not really a Christmas present so opening it is probably OK. Work secret Santa would be opened straight away for example and this doesn't even have the 'Santa' term attached. Both the one I sent and the one being sent to me are due to arrive after the 25th so I guess it's not my problem either way!

Be warned, O my Secret Quonsar: yours oughta show up Monday from Amazon. Hope you dig it.

Also, what book did you get? Enquiring minds want to know!

One part of my secret quonsar's gift should also get there Monday. I was feeling uninspired, but something struck me as odd on your profile, so I went with that.

I just realized I'm in serious danger of getting a penguin.

I found the perfect gift for my secret quonsar on etsy, but waited a couple of days to order. I went back and it was sold. I emailed the seller to see if they'll have another on time. If that won't work I'm not sure what I'll do!

Wait...I thought it needed to me in the mail by the 14th, not arrive by the 14th! Eep!

I'm certain this is how the exchange is structured. Drawing was on the first, package should be mailed no later than the 14th. That it may have been mailed on the same day as the drawing by some should not mean that everyone has to get their packages there immediately.

That said, I have some 'splaining shopping to do!

Quinoa received Show Me How: 500 Things You Should Know Instructions for Life From the Everyday to the Exotic.

Sure, I cheated by $2 on the purchase price, but 2-day shipping was free due to my Amazon Prime trial, so it evens out.

The reason I sent the Secret Quonsar so soon was so I wouldn't forget about it later. 8-)

Actually, on my birthday the day before yesterday, at work, I recieved a cupcake shaped bouquet, adressed to 'jonmc,' (not my full name). The card merely said 'FROM THE INTERNET.'

Freaky.

As mrbill said, I got this remarkable book which just about does away with the need to ask metafilter, or even google, anything. How to trim rose bushes. How to flirt. How to mount a camel. (Ahem.) How to brush a puppy's teeth.

In fact, if we distributed this widely enough, it might do away with AskMeFi completely! On second thought, the book seems very optimistic, since there are no instructions on how or when to DTMFA. So AskMeFi is safe after all.

It's a Christmas present and you opened it before Christmas.

I did, actually, carefully research quonsar etiquette to find out whether I was supposed to wait to open my gift, but last year's Metatalk thread suggested that opening a quonsar gift upon arrival was acceptable. Interestingly, I was only wondering if I was supposed to wait until after quonsar mailing day...I didn't grow up with Christmas, so it didn't even occur to me to wait until the 25th.

I just picked up my Secret Quonsee's gift yesterday. I feel so un-spectacular now.

Winnipeg, no! You should feel spectacular for being on the early side of things! I just bought mine yesterday too...But surely someone else must be able to post a thank you? Anyone?

Er. With shipping, mine was over $15. But it was probably under 15 euros. Despite the fact I'm in the US, I'm going to run with that.

I hope my secret Quonsar likes it, but I have a slight bit of worry as the item was not new and I didn't get to inspect it before the store shipped it off to the recipient. So I know what the item is, in general, I just don't what kind of shape this particular item was in. I hope it's not worse than the store described.

This may be the place to say THANK YOU for my last year's SQ present. It didn't arrive until February but it totally rocked. Two regional American cookery books and instructions about what music to listen to whilst cooking so as to get into the right region. I was really touched by the thought that went into it. The person it was from (I don't know their username) was completing a thesis plus moving house so it was amazing that they managed to send anything.

/guilt for not thanking before

I received mine today. It arrived from Americaland in 6 days! From Newark DE. I don't know what/where the DE is, but I'm assuming Newark isn't slang for New York...but I kind of wish it was.

So, I didn't open it... but I did open the card and read the customs slip.

I"m so excited. I was certain I"d have a dud Secret Quonsar.

Do I thank my Secret Quonsar directly? I'd like to. I know who they are. But I didn't write on the Secret Quonsar, that I sent to the UK, who it was from. I think I just said it was from Secret Quonsar.

And I spent about $18 on the gift and $30 on postage.... I probably should have chosen something smaller and lighter to post overseas.

So... to stop rambling and get back to my original question.... where do the thank yous go?
posted by taff at 8:12 PM on December 8, 2009

DE is Delaware, a state, and Newark is a city there, unrelated to New York (although there is a Newark in New York too).

You are welcome to post thanks here or thank them directly if you know who they are. Either way is fine.
posted by IndigoRain at 11:32 PM on December 8, 2009

Thanks IndigoRain. I guess I could have googled (why didn't I???? silly me!)... but your link told me things I didn't know. I usually enjoy trying to work out what the letters stand for... but would NEVER have worked out Delaware. I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I"m not sure I would ever have guessed that. I think I thought it was a city.

Never strong on geography.

Now I know a little bit more about my universe. Thanks possum!
posted by taff at 2:48 AM on December 9, 2009

There migt be a Newark in NY state (I'd have to check a map) but the Newark that you are thinking of that is not in Delaware is really in New Jersey. Airport, turnpike, etc.

Dear Secret Quonsar,

It was a delight to answer my doorbell just now and get THREE packages containing things from my wishlist. Thank you so much for the devil duckies, my favorite childhood book (From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler), and a book I've wanted for a long time but never gave myself permission to actually buy because it seemed so silly (Loser Goes First: My Thirty-Something Years of Dumb Luck and Minor Humiliation).

I love them all and really appreciate that you sent them to me. Now tell me who you are :D

Last year, the gift I got was nicely giftwrapped. So I saved it for Christmas, and even brought it to the family Christmas to open with the rest of my gifts. This was not the best idea. "What's that gift?" "Oh, it's from some stranger on the internet." "Really?!" Luckily it was something normal.
