An Olympic Vancouver meetup?

I don't know if this is a really good idea, or a really terrible idea...

I'm living in Vancouver. I think other people live here too. Who are also mefites. And maybe a few more are dancing there way into Van city for some olympic action.

There's culture oozing everywhere like sap out of a maple tree. There's free music coming out of the wazoo.

Any mefites want to meet up in the next couple weeks? Anyone in town from out of town, want to celebrate some olympics, mefi style?

I will be in town between the 16th and the 24th. Barring work needs, I might be able to make it.

yup.

I'll be in town between the 20th and 26th; although I've got some family things scheduled, I'd love to come to a meetup.

Potentially yes

Just watching the surreal scene of Gretzky heading out of the stadium to light a second cauldron and being driven through protesters to light the second cauldron, after one of the hydraulics on the opening ceremonies failed. So I have a topic to suggest: Canada can build a mechanical arm for the Space Shuttle but not ones for Olympic torch bearing. Compare weight ratios and discuss.

Maybe. But can we not call it an Olympic meetup? I'm developing an allergy.

The Canadian rabid hockey fan civil-rights attorney wife was having a laugh about "free speechers" blocking ticketholders from attending. Figure skating maybe, curling perhaps. If you stand in the way of the Canadian hockey fans who are going to attend a Canadian hockey event then you are likely to find yourself with an insiders view of the vaunted Canadian health care system.

I'm in and will bring the cameras.

So tentatively sunday the 21st to accomodate both bonehead and hurdy gurdy girl? I'll give it a couple more days to see if we get any more constraints.

Also, maybe we could call it the Cthonic meetup? Or maybe Hadic? Tartaric?

I can't do Sundays; it's the day we put the paper together and so I am tied up the whole time.

I would love to come to a Vancouver meetup - been ages since the last one I made it to - but I'm skipping town until the 23rd. (Like stray I would much prefer a "meetup" to an "Olympic meetup". )

Oh dear, sorry, the 21st is a family reunion day for me. :-(

Put me in the maybe camp too. I don't have much going on, but I'll see... and also see if I'm willing to deal with all the crowds. Never did like lining up to get in for a drink, although I have been know to do it.

Well I'm totally open. I'm just fielding days. Would the 24th work better for people?

And I wasn't expecting to do anything in crowded places necessarily. I was thinking of just meeting in the afternoon at say, Delaney's Coffee house.

24th is a possibility, especially if it's in the afternoon. And I do like the idea of Delaney's.

So should I say we're on for the 24th at Delaney's, or have things fizzled out a bit?

which Delaney's? the one on Davie?
posted by seawallrunner at 10:11 PM on February 15, 2010

My vote's for that one if it's convenient for others.

delaney's on davie?? I only see one on denman, is that the one you mean?
posted by jeffj at 11:47 AM on February 17, 2010

Yah, that's the one. Right now I'm giving up on the meetup though, since so few people seem interested. If someone else wants to carry the flag though, I'd still be happy to come if it happens.

What? Huh? Don't give up Alex404, stay the course.

I'll have to bail if it's downtown or near a tourist attraction like Granville Island (as an example). Made the mistake of getting off the skytrain at Granville & Georgia instead of Waterfront and omfgpeopleallover and they all walk too slow. What did the news say... "hundreds of thousands of people downtown." Can't. deal. with. people. agh. Next time!
