Metafilter has the prettiest ladies in all the internet April 26, 2010 6:42 PM   Subscribe

In his famous post about his memories of food, Roger Ebert compared interacting with people on the internet to eating dinner with them. I prefer to think of it like a tea party.

I swear that this song is about Metafilter, but because it's probably isn't it's totally about the internet in general. It's on Lala.

Oh, and it's a little sexist, but that's just Stephin Merritt making something of a joke! He probably doesn't think that all ladies are like this! Just be glad it's not as bad as A Pritty Girl Is Like

The Dolls' Tea Party
by The Magnetic Fields

At the dolls' tea party we fritter away
The long afternoon of a long summer day
With extended pinkies and pink cloisonné
Cups and saucers and pots and a Liberty tray

That's why we take our tea
At the dolls' tea party

At the dolls' tea party we twitter along
We prattle and tattle on who's done whom wrong
On who's in, who's out, and who's the best at mah-jongg
Oh, and where to buy fabulous things for a song

That's why we take our tea
At the dolls' tea party

But the cakes! Ah, the cakes are why everyone's there.
They're not diatetic in any way, dare
To try one and you'll have a few pounds to spare
Try another one. What do you care?

At the dolls' we're all in our glittering best
There will be a test on who's best and worst dressed
But we won't have it said we're fashion-obsessed
We're just prettier ladies than most of the rest

That's why we take our tea
At the dolls' tea party.

This isn't directed at the mods. The song made me think about Metafilter and my behavior on the site, and I thought that at least a few people would appreciate it. If you would rather it was gone go ahead and close it up.

But the cakes! Ah, the cakes are why everyone's there.

Good point, though, where are my cakes?

Y'know, I was pretty indifferent to Ebert for a long time until MeFi made a convincing case that he was a cool guy. But the man has to fucking ease up on the Twitter; it's not so much sharing a meal with someone as sitting at the table while they back a truck and dump a pile of stuff - some is good, but some is seriously half-baked shit that he picked up from some roadside crap stand, and then you're all like, hey, I appreciate this and all, I mean, that's a lot of food, but there's just so much of it, and it's sort of all mixing together and y'know, I made a salad, it's just a little plain salad, but it's pretty good, maybe you'd like to try it and the guy's like HEY I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THIS TRUCK AVALANCHE OF LOBSTER AND PARTIALLY CHEWED BUTTERFINGERS HOPE YOU SAVED ROOM FOR DESSERT.
