MetaFilter was the winner here, I was a little drunk when I wrote the caption as if "I" won. But yay! I've never really entered an award show before but when MeFi became a finalist I really wanted us to win.

About the Award:
10 Year Award

If Internet time were equivalent to real time, then the survival of this site over ten years is equivalent to the survival of cockroaches over the next millennia.

in all seriousness though, congrats!

It's hard to tell from this picture, but Matt accepted the award from a man in a full-body robot costume. His acceptance speech was, "Thanks!" The MC said, "That's it?" And there was thunderous applause.
posted by pb (staff) at 9:29 PM on May 20, 2010 [6 favorites]

I don't suppose there was an acceptance speech. I don't suppose it was interrupted by a belligerent Kanye West. I don't suppose he insisted that Geocities had the best website of all time.

Of all time.

I think this is fucking awesome. If any site on the internet deserves an award for going strong for ten years, and getting better and better all that time, it's Metafilter.

(Also I was totally standing around in downtown Portland trying to decide if I should buy dinner or drive home and risk traffic when Matt, with pb and someone I didn't recognize, walked by and said hi. I guess they were on the way to the awards.)

(I decided to drive home and ended up making some delicious stir fry. Which isn't as exciting as winning an award, but still.)

I'd love to see what the other finalists were, but the awards site is teh broken

Woohoo!

And who else could possibly have won an award for 10 years of excellence? No one!

Well, I suppose the other nominees could have won, but how likely was that?

"Bandwidth Limit Exceeded."

I guess this web award won't be winning any web awards.

I particularly love that this took place on the same day as the whole 'saved from the Russian mob' thing which is, obviously, a historical high point of MeFi's history.

Matt, don't feel a minutes embarrassment at saying I won. You did. None of us would be here without you, and your willingness to stick with this even back in the days when it didn't bring you any income and your wife was probably like "Hey, do you have to monitor that site every single day..... Come to the beach!"

Thank you for doing this for all these years, for sticking with it, for putting up with weirdos and jerks, and for not selling us to Gawker or some such thing.

So... The WebVisionary Awards website exceeded its bandwidth limit? I guess they didn't envision the demand.

That never happens to the lolcats.

10 year award? Is that like the grumpy old man award? I think MeFi should have swept a few other categories, but I guess we kinda earned the GetOffMyLawn Trophy of GRAR. So, um, yay us?
posted by Quietgal at 9:39 AM on May 21, 2010

And tonight at that same club they are having a puppet slam. I am not even sure what that mean, but man, I want to go.
posted by cjorgensen at 9:43 AM on May 21, 2010

Yep, because if I told them once I told them 100 times: MeFi first, THEN puppet slam.

This is great! Congratulations, Matt, the mods, and everybody. Well done.

Question: The finalists seem really Portland/Oregon-centric. Was there some sort of Oregon focus in the entrance criteria or the judging? Is it because Webvisions is in Portland? Or are we Portlanders just the awesomest people on the planet?

I think it's the third one.

If chosen, I will not serve.
posted by jquinby at 5:32 PM on May 21, 2010

maqsarian it's Portland centric because it's a regional conference. It's like at the SXSW awards, almost all the winners are from Austin web design firms.
