MetaSearch FAQ? June 10, 2010 6:43 PM   Subscribe

Is there anything that details the features and operators of MetaFilter's own MetaSearch?

I can't seem to find one... curious if operators such as '+,' '-,' 'and,' even double quotes "query here" ala google work or not. If there's not an FAQ could something easily be tossed together? I'll help in whatever capacity...

(this is neither a complaint nor a pony; i got my pony last year, thank you very, very much!)

The search feature is very, very simple. We don't have any operators and no quoted strings. You put in search terms and get matching posts and comments. If you have more than one keyword, you get posts and comments that contain them all.

I think we haven't felt the need for a FAQ entry because there isn't much to explain. No hidden features. But we could probably put something together letting people know that there isn't much more to it.

just spent the better part of a minute trying to figure out how to mark pb's reply as 'best answer.' god, what an idiot i am...

last year i asked for the number of comments to be listed in the rss feed.
for some reason the mods thought that intelligent and implemented it.
it felt very cool. thank you mods!

We need serious colon searching technology.

Allegedly, extraterrestrials having been visiting our planet and making use of such technology for quite some time.

One feature people might want to know about -- the search doesn't work for stemming. If you want to find "eggs", you can't search for "egg". I learned this the hard way after getting a few posts deleted (after doing what I thought were good searches).

Sometimes, instead of a MetaSearch, you can find what you're looking for using a Google search with an added site restriction of "site:metafilter.com" or "site:ask.metafilter.com" (of course, without the quotes).
