Meet Up or Die? June 16, 2010 1:16 PM   Subscribe

New Hampshire (and the rest of northern New England) meetup!

Since 2005, there have been no meetups with the word "New Hampshire" in the description. Let's try to change that! There may not be many of us, but we're probably a pretty cool bunch!

How do New Englanders feel about meeting in late July or early August, somewhere in Manchester, Concord, or Portsmouth? Food ... drinks ... some sort of summertime recreation like climbing a mountain or sitting on a beach (preferably with food)?

Oh nice, I was about to suggest something like that: I'll be in southern Maine from July 24-31 and would be happy to meet up somewhere not too far from Portsmouth (Manchester and Concord are at about the outer range for me, and only if they're midweek -- I've been stuck in weekend traffic before).

I'd come to Portsmouth, maybe further, summer gets really busy really fast.

Portsmouth is nice, so I'd be game (though if it was pushed a wee bit north to York Beach, I'd be ecstatic :)

I will probably be interested in something. Manchvegas would please me. York Beach is a little bit of a stretch.

Oh, this is exciting. I'd also prefer Manchvegas (conveniently speaking), particularly if weeknights are something people is up for. I don't think I can make it out to Portsmouth on a non-weekend. I don't want to narrow things down too much, but how's something between July 15 and 20 in either Manchester or Portsmouth?

I've only been able to go to bars in Manchester for about a year (most of which I've not been here) so I'm not up on the places to go outside of places like Strange Brew and the Black Brimmer. What about Unwined or Taipei and Tokyo? (unless anyone's under 21). As far as Portsmouth, the Friendly Toast and the Flatbread Company are the only things that come to mind. Non-food centered, I've got nothing. Any additional suggestions?

Oops, sometime between July 15 and 25?

I just googled "Manch Vegas". Granitarians are weird.
posted by Cat Pie Hurts at 3:37 PM on June 16, 2010

According to Wikipedia, "Manchester is nicknamed the Queen City. More recent nicknames for the city are ManchVegas, Funchester, ManchHattan, Manchganistan, and simply "Manch""

I've never been to Manchester, though a friend once described it to me as the "Worcester of the North". I'm still willing to come visit, though.

I suggest a meetup with "New Hampshire" in the description but held in Albuquerque.

Also, whoa, I only live 2 hours from The Jessamyn.

Why did I think you lived in Montana?

Ouch. Harsh but fair.

2 hours? Lucky.

I'm near Brattleboro VT and would consider coming, depending on place/time.

As an outing option, I'd suggest a climb of Mt. Monadnock. Not as stressful as White Mountains, fabulous views, historic and all that. Second most-climbed mountain in the world, allegedly. Options for non-climbers to join for post-descent libations nearby in Keene.

(Nice play on the NH motto, BTW)

I might be able to make it up for a NH meetup. I'm away in August but around until the last weekend in July.
posted by bondcliff at 7:48 PM on June 16, 2010

I'd be much more likely to go to Portsmouth than Manchester, but I'm also out of state for two weeks starting July 30th, so.....
posted by anastasiav at 8:22 PM on June 16, 2010

I could do Portsmouth the 24 or 25, not Manchester those days. I'd also be up for York Beach. Evenings are better, since I refuse to waste nice days driving when I could be swimming. In

Always up for tax free liquor stores meeting folks! I think Portsmouth and Manchester are more or less equidistant from me, so I don't have any particular opinion. I can carry some folks in my car if any other Bostonians want to join in.

ChuraChura, as the convenor, I think you are tasked with choosing between ManchFilter and PortsTalk and naming the date.

Beagle, once a date and place are established, maybe you could organize a Mt Monadnock climb around it, or another nice climb. Personally, I've never been up Mt. Washington by car, and would like to. You gotta earn that bumper sticker.

I vote for Portsmouth, not near the July 4 holiday, and will do my best to come, even if it's in Manchistan.

*sigh* One of these days I'll make it back east to a New England meetup of more than two (not that it wasn't a hoot, terp and TG!) This, however, is not that day.
posted by SpiffyRob at 6:38 AM on June 17, 2010

I'd vote for Manchester, since I might continue up to the Whites the next day to climb something (family obligations permitting) but I'll be happy to go to Portsmouth too.

But I'm a Masshole, so you NH folks can do all the planning.
posted by bondcliff at 6:42 AM on June 17, 2010

I might be free to make the trek from Portland, especially to a seacoast locale, if its a Thursday, Friday or Saturday. I can bring fresh bread for a (beach) picnic.
posted by bzbb at 7:34 AM on June 17, 2010

Are NH-native Massholes allowed? I could make it back to Portsmouth.

I love me some friendly toast.

I think I would like to come but I've never been to a meet up before and I, too, am a Masshole. Is that a deal breaker?
posted by pentagoet at 10:38 AM on June 17, 2010

I'm in NYC for the rest of the year, but given advance warning, I can make sure I'm in Boston for a weekend. I can even make a 3-day weekend for myself with enough notice.

(In other words, I'm basically commenting here so it will show up in my Recent Activity.)

Depends, how do you feel about air conditioning?
posted by bondcliff at 11:07 AM on June 17, 2010

Think carefully before answering that question. It's a tricky one.
posted by Eideteker at 11:47 AM on June 17, 2010

Air conditioning is fine between consenting adults.
posted by pentagoet at 1:00 PM on June 17, 2010

Are you sure Worcester isn't the "Manchester of the South"?
I like Manchganistan and will now use it in reference to that fair city
posted by pentagoet at 1:03 PM on June 17, 2010

I'm not available the 17th/18th.... I'd be up for an August meetup though.
posted by not_on_display at 2:40 PM on June 17, 2010

Keene and Monadnock are near me. Portsmouth is far but nicer than those cities in the middle, or so I think. Yet they do have the advantage of being central. July 15 - 25 is out for me. So I will sit here on the sidelines and let you guys decide and if I can make it, great. Someone page languagehat. Also, other states are welcome.
posted by Hobgoblin at 3:14 PM on June 17, 2010

ChuraChura, if you can figure out a meetup date from all this, I salute you.
posted by JanetLand at 6:14 PM on June 17, 2010

... I am really overwhelmed and did not think there were so many Northern New Englanders and our southern brethren wandering around Metafilter.

Since it's been decided that I am the, well, decider, I'm going to say Manchester because it is more convenient for me. I'm for Saturday, July 17. That'll leave time for folks to climb a mountain in the afternoon, if you're so inclined. To be really, truly Manchvegas-y, I suggest the The Red Arrow.

So then:

July 17. 7:30 PM. The Red Arrow.

Yea? Nay?
posted by ChuraChura at 8:02 PM on June 17, 2010

I am a maybe. The last time I went to the Red Arrow it only sat like 20 people. Is this a different Red Arrow?
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 8:07 PM on June 17, 2010

I'm out. If enough people aren't able for this one, I might try to set one up (in Portsmouth) for the week I'm around, though.
posted by jeather at 8:56 PM on June 17, 2010

No, you're right, Jessamyn. I guess my suggestion would only work if a few people show up. Let's say Strange Brew in anticipation of a big turnout!

Strange Brew, July 17, 7:30 PM.

Have fun, kids! I can't make that. Don't forget to get your account banned if Jessamyn attends!

Sorry, that weekend is out for me.
posted by beagle at 7:04 AM on June 18, 2010

Clearly I chose wrong. Is this weekend good for anyone? Otherwise, we can move it up or down, as this was sort of arbitrary.
posted by ChuraChura at 7:54 AM on June 18, 2010

I can make it that weekend or later. Any earlier in July, we have guests over.

I can't do saturday evenings.

I should be able to do the 17th.
posted by bondcliff at 4:00 PM on June 18, 2010

OK! The 17th it will be. If anyone else makes another NH-area meetup on a different day, I will do my very best to make it!
posted by ChuraChura at 5:38 PM on June 18, 2010

Horace Rumpole and I would be interested in coming up from the Boston area, pending his work schedule. We're not Mass natives if that helps.

BTW, turtlegirl plan to have a party the 24th. It was going to be the 17th, but was reminded of this thread. More will be posted as plans firm.
