Metafilter has no official mascot that I'm aware of, though jquinby once proposed the giant squid. Wendell seems to have taken down his design for the overthinkin' bean. I have a critter here that deserves consideration: the pancake batfish, Halieutichthys aculeatus. "They're not like a flounder; they are much more mobile, more like a pancake with feet."

N.b. the term "batfishinsane" has already popped up once or twice on-site. This instance was a link (to a pic of the related rosy-lipped batfish) that now 404's, so here's a replacement. Of the two flavors I think the pancake fishie makes the better mascot because "rosy-lipped" isn't really a top word association for "metafilter" even though many members may be, individually. (That particular r-l bf did pick up some extra mascot points for strongly resembling a mefi member to whom somebody has just whispered "Sarah Palin," "Cory Doctorow," or "Comic Sans.")

Meffy is a heaping, anthropomorphic mash of bean, taters, and hurf durf butter on a collectible plate that reads "MetaFilter: Please hope me!!!" (in Comic Sans), holding a bottle of Pepsi Blue in one hand and a banjo in the other, riding on a pony. Meffy is typically depicted against a professional white background.

From his site: And while some of you (mostly at Twitter) have said nice things about some of the Old Content that has been returned to the Archive, I am still quite anxious about what may be lurking back there. I did have an annoying amount of difficulty posting the Overthinkin’ Bean graphic in the MetaFilter-reference post yesterday, and have since discovered that some (but not all) of the pics in older posts have disappeared. Apparently, somewhere in Conversionland, the addresses in the posts started pointing at places where the pictures were not, or just never stopped pointing at where they used to be. It needs to be in the form of a mefi-blue hindu god, with eight arms! These are holding its symbolic weapons & accoutrements:

- the mushroom of perfect edukation
- the beanplate of limitless contemplation
- the pitchfork of fearsome vengeance
- the giant donut of infinite sustenance

Okay, I thought Over Thinkin' Bean hadn't gone over so well (one favorite) but jfuller thinks otherwise. Thanks! It was not so much taken down as my attempt to save it independently of the WordPress content junk went pear-shaped (not bean-shaped) when I moved the old blog to a WP 3.0 multi-site installation and the domain mapping couldn't find it anymore (If you understand what I just wrote, EXPLAIN IT TO ME).

Anyway, here he is, at a new, even more appropriate url: OVER-THINKIN' BEAN IS THINKIN'

Otherwise, I also thought that Oolong and other bunnies were pre-empted by the wacky wabbits at the Metachat spin-off, and any attempt to counter that with a duck will not end well.

I can also see multiple ways a chicken mascot can fail, unless you go with SUPERCHICKEN. (But I just noticed that superchicken.com is a porn site, so maybe not even that)

Elephants? Between the GOP and quonsar's classic pissing pachaderm pic (one of the things that lost us the img tag), I'd think we wouldn't go there, but...

And squid? Thise Portland-based site may have some affection for the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus, but I'm not so sure of cephalopods.

Still, beans aren't the only non-animal mascots we should consider (credit to J. Rosenberg of goats.com who has designed some other neat creatures)

And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder: One of the four moderators saying: "Come and see." And I saw. And behold, a website.

Metafilter's goin' 'round takin' names. decides who to link and who to ban. Everybody won't be treated all the same. There'll be a golden tater reaching down. When Metafilter comes around

The SEOs will stand up. At the terror in each post and in each re-up . For you partake of that last offered spouse, Or disappear into the Metatalk. When the website comes around.

Hear the banjos, hear the videos. One hundred million members singin'. Multitudes are marching to Mathowie's drum. People askin', people cryin'. Some are born an' some are banning'. It's Alpha's and Oolong's Kingdom come.

And the whirlwind is in the Flag queue. The bunnies are all trimming their wicks. The whirlwind is in the Flag queue. It's hard for thee to flgag against the pricks.

Till Armageddon, no Shalam, no Shalom. Then the father squid will call his monsters home. The wise men will bow down before the member. And at his feet they'll cast their golden fave . When the man comes around.

Whoever is an asshat, let him be an asshat still. Whoever is righteous, let him be falgged fantastic still. Whoever is in-joked, let him be taters beanplated still. Listen to the words long written down, When Metafilter comes around.

And I heard a voice in the midst of the four moderators, And I looked and behold: a pale professional background. And his name, that sat on him, was Death. And 4chan followed with him.
