Having a schtick of dropping random lines into threads, over and over again, does not make one charming.

I mean, this is apparently Random Thread, so what the hell, go nuts. But in general, on the site as a whole, don't be surprised if people are annoyed if you're randomly writing whatever comes into your head. This isn't an art space. It's conversation, sometimes on fairly narrowly defined topics. Random speech violates the norms of conversation, and even if you have some internal artist-statement rationale about how you're doing it for the sake of shaking people up or whatever, you're still blundering around in a conversation about something else, and you're effectively trying to make it about you or your artistic goals of randomness. You can't be surprised that people are like "cut it out." Join the conversation or don't, but don't just hang around in the room shouting random stuff.

I'm speaking in general terms, not meaning any kind of fightyness. Generally speaking -- I can understand why someone might be drawn to the random art-commenting spree, feeling like it will be received in a certain spirit -- but I also think it's a bad fit for this site (at its current size anyway, maybe worked better when the site was a much smaller community?) for the reason I gave.

For a while, cyberspace.com had a chat "room" that was just cgi-bin forms that every 500 posts or so got wiped out. It was one of my formative internet experiences, going to the library to use the computers to talk to someone who claimed to be the daughter of a general in Argentina (or maybe admiral) but all she wanted to talk about was indie rock with Americans. Plus also a lot of other people.

The page had a really similar format to MeFi, with name and timestamp.

posted by shinybaum at 11:29 PM on November 12, 2010

It's deathly serious. High drama, good character development, and some *intense* graphic violence (way beyond what I would expect from any television show), but done in a way that serves the plot and advances character growth -- they aren't happy about the things they gotta do to survive. Cheesy, it is not. This is no True Blood (which I love too, but for entirely different reasons).

Blazing ones.

SO

The Walking Dead. I'm not into it.

Some of it is that the part of the premise that intrigued me, taking off from the point when most zombie stuff stops and trying to show life in the refugee camp/reconstruction just hasn't happened yet and we've got to go through the standard genre tropes first. Fine. I like zombie movie tropes, love them in fact! But this is a very standard outing, not a whole lot of scares, not a bunch of new or unusual situations to put in the tropes in (this was part of the fun of World War Z, which was basically a list of Craziest Places We Can Put Zombies In), and it feels very rushed to get it over ...so that a lot of scenes rely on unearned emotion. What should be key scenes in the pilot are carried almost entirely by a big emotional swells the show hasn't built up to cause I don't care if someone (apparently) lost their family if I can't even remember his name or any basic motivation besides Is A Cop. The Mom thing was a shade better, but I feel like this is Adaption Lag - there's so much to fit in that you end up glancing over big reaches and expecting the audience to know who the hell these people are. It's all plot plot plot and not terribly new or interesting plot at that. Then we get to the second episode, which had more action but also (clumsily) introduced a whole bunch of stock characters announcing their feelings and motivations at the start of every scene. I'm sticking with it cause of the immense good will AMC has built up and because the scale of something like this on Basic Cable, but I haven't seen a single thing so far that I haven't seen done better elsewhere.

I think the 'new' that the show brings isn't necessarily going to appear until we're a few episodes in, because what it has going for it that any other zombie film doesn't have is that it can end up lasting for dozens of hours.
posted by shakespeherian at 10:31 AM on November 13, 2010

I'm with you, The Whelk. Cop Dude is also sort of painfully genre unsavy, even for a horror hero. Plus he got that horse killed in the pilot! For all he's supposed to be a hero with a heart of gold, that really cheesed me off.

I've only seen the pilot, but what vvalking dead has most going against it is just plain lack of star power. You can get away with murder with charismatic actors.

The scene with the matches in the stairwell, and the slow reveal of the body bags were actually pretty good moments, I thought.

Yes, Walking Dead. First off, having just seen the pilot, I'm a bit behind, (is there a good place to watch the others?), but what I really liked were the landscapes. Maybe it's my city planner side, but you started with Industrial Ruin (kinda), then got Small Town Main Street, then Agrarian Countryside, then Big City. And these were all clearly in the same region (is that unusual? it kinda felt like it). That combined with the relative slowness of the zombies and overall atmospherics made me able to feel actually there, more than most TV shows at least.

Just a moment to disagree here, as someone from Michigan. You can be in the woods in half an hour from most cities in the north and midwest. The exceptions are the Northeast Megasprawl and, like, Chicago.

As for Walking Dead, they're still only a couple issues into the trade, if you know what I'm saying. The pace of the TV show is a lot slower than the comics, and the comics didn't start to get really good until they were in the prison. Then they sort of trailed off and got a lot less interesting.

The best parts so far have been in foreshadowing major themes that are done well in the book (the regular descent of the characters into effective zombiehood). That their motivations are stock is something that's a lot more apparent on screen than in the comic, but since those motivations become a lot less important pretty soon, it's not something that I'm all that worried about. The weak acting is more troubling.

But I am totally with Salvia on the excellent sense of place, especially for a TV show.

Sorry, I should have clarified northeast! But having driven through Georgia more times than I care to remember, the landscape in the show feels pretty accurate to me.

The upcoming "should we go back into Deadlanta to rescue Michael RooKKKer" trip seems like one of those fairly idiotic hypothetical ethics scenarios where you have to decide whether to drop a sad-eyed orphan into boiling oil to save a busload of nuns or something.

Well, I like it. I mean, it's TV. It's certainly better than anything else I'm watching on TV at the moment. It's holding my interest right now more than Dexter.

What Zombie series are you comparing it to? I don't think it's fair to invoke "tropes" that are mostly gleaned from 90-minute, low-budget movies and apply it to a serial that is going a completely different direction than previous zombie flicks. Seems almost as if you want to hate it because it's A Zombie Show™ rather than judge it on its own merit.

I found all three episodes to be very good so far. I do understand the feeling that you are expected to care about characters you haven't grown attached to, which was my major complaint with SG:U. But I think the characters in this show have so far been pretty sympathetic and interesting.

How could they have done this better? More guts? Get Nathan Fillon as the lead? What?

I am rather vexed that there will only be 6 episodes this season

I'll take a stab.

Because there's a difference between looking at someone's profile because you're interested, and making it a matter of public scrutiny in a MetaTalk pile-on.

My profile is currently barren. But once upon a time I had a bunch of personal information there that I put up in good faith (a phrase synonymous with "naive"). The idea that someone could pick through it, do a few google queries, and then proceed to humiliate me in a thread because I said something they disagreed with -- that would be indexed by google forever -- prompted me to actually close my account. I re-opened it, but stripped everything out I could. I'm still uncomfortable participating in this community due to the ever-present danger of someone who is highly regarded deciding I"m an enemy that deserves public humiliation, but I feel a little better now that they can't track down my personal details from my profile.

Take that as you will.

posted by shakespeherian at 6:58 AM on November 15, 2010

I'm comparing it to zombie movies and books and other genre stuff. i fucking love zombie tropes, be use they're so elastic and adapatable, so getting six hours to spend on them should be really fun, except I haven't seen anything new or even done particularly well wilth the premise so far. And all the major plot developments rely on emotional pivots for characters that have one personality trait a piece. Even the direction keeps coasting, telling "okay his is a moody and tense scene." but not doing anything to merit it being creepy or moody. I can't shake the feeling that I'm watching a particularly wooden and overly faithful adaptation of something that's making up for not having a ton of plot by mooching very slowly to no dramatic effect. I've said unthread, since the new idea the series pro ports to bring is What Do The Survivors do, it might have been better to skip the zombie movie beginning and start out sack dab in the middle of a struggling but established survivor camp.

Nathan Fillon should be in everything, of course, but last night I kept thinking - are they all bad actors or do they just literally have nothing to work with?

He has no qualms about sacrificing Ken Congrove when they're running down 5th Ave, and coldly presses the 'Door Close' button on the elevator when several of the secretary pool are trying to get through a horde of zombies in the building's lobby.

Eventually Pete becomes a zombie, somewhat akin to Bub in Day of the Dead, with vague memories of his former life and a crude utilization of familiar tools. Peggy shoots him dead through the eye and gives a quiet smile, and Don lights another cigarette with a mysterious look of pride.

The Phenomenology of Synesthesia
There will be a workshop on "The Phenomenology of Synesthesia", sponsored by the NYU Consciousness Project, on Saturday November 20. It will be held in the first floor lecture theatre at 5 Washington Place (between Broadway and Washington Square in New York City).

Synesthesia is the syndrome in which a stimulus in one sensory modality reliably yields an experience associated with a different sensory modality. The focus of the workshop will be the question "What is it like to be a synesthete?". There will be talks and discussion from philosophers, psychologists, and synesthetes. All are welcome. The program is below.

'We need to stay alive until help comes.'

'But we have, like, a whole break room full of food. Jesus.'

Struggling, as his convoluted syntax makes apparent, "to mean what I // mean to mean something:" (54), Ammons creates in Garbage a poetic form to represent the landfill on which he meditates. He, like the bulldozer-driving garbage spreader in section 4, purposively develops a non-hierarchical flat form; in fact, Ammons uses the superlative, saying Garbage is to be his "flattest poem" (14), despite the poem/dump's proclivity to mound up. His signatory use of the colon isolates words, clauses, and phrases just as so many individual pieces of rubbish headed for the heap, along with the equally worn out "old deck chairs, // crippled aluminum lawn chairs, lemon crates / with busted slats or hinges" (30-31).

i think its bull.

Klang does not like my Storm Lake Iowa DJ circa 1983. It was hasty. Typing is the part of the telegraphikal yuk-yuk. Ever do Morse Klang, not the fictional detective nor John Thaw which is The Whelks' skit, but is an art and a craft. Like the brain tells the hand to Rumba. New pauses, a dribbled tap. transmit a test, under 1 minute before schedule knowing the other person who you have never met would answer back even if he was in the outhouse...in time. Edison was joksta telegrapher, an instinct but he had to work at it. History will probably record a bribe or that boxcar tom really just started a mobile fruit, nut and candy stand. Once I drove to Port Huron at about 85-125 mph and searched until daylight for a some old depot. got gacked and fished....always bring reference and tackle on a drunken historical folly.

"THE DEAD SAILORS SIR, ARE COLLECTING":
Big house tonight,11 people...the jingle and the jabber "my boards are wrong, these galleys will not do... Fu$k it, I am moving to Togo" That smiley dreck and tie. Scottish drinking songs. "Gotta get the Ice" is good once only then they start looking for you in the car with a gun metal bong watching the Lions. WTF? nephew. Then the ever devolving "WARSAW I TELL YOU". oh ya, always 2 or 3 everywere. But i turned off the news feed. 20 minutes on naval tactics and he still brings his VHS of Potemkin

seals are very smart and jebus are they cute. "fish"= meme. a song. story. movie you saw. something that, something etc. a cultural universal like pogo sticks in Jakarta.

this thread has improved my typing with along with the delicate dances of Mavis Beacon. was going to do a skit on the American Phili-buster.
then I Thought about a two-step on Shaw. men/flat earth/ truth.

I will tell a meme. it is about what was said in this thread
Sisyphus etc.
The Allusion Club and it goes back to uni.
historical puzzles decoupaged. laugh at the absurd nature of real contemplation.
"first it was the money then it was everything" you see. anything like a bob ross painting.
allusion. make it what you will and remember Zeppo if mirrors start pop-up. The idea of the allusion club is to dissipate the apparatus most felt. you discount you own humanness and it wins like 'things that go bump in the night'.
remember the couriers. when the photo speaks a thousand and one words and the poem reaches no one. it is not an allusion?

I wish I could find the negatives for a roll of film I shot a couple years ago when Michigan got that huge, incapacitating snowfall. The trucks plowed it all into a playground near my house, building this hills of snow that were around eight feet high. They looked cool to start with, but looked even cooler when it got warm enough for them to melt. Because the trucks had rolled the snow up (you know, like plows do), as they melted, they looked like giant, frozen waves of water. Every time I go back to Michigan, I hope to find those negatives, or get a massive snowfall. Either one.

1.

I made some coin today and that’s something. Which led me to Hans- Georg Gadamer. the ‘Applied hermeneutic’ ‘H-G Gadamer on Education, Poetry and History'.

‘Are the Poets falling Silent?'*

“In our society, which is increasingly ruled by automats mechanisms and where the word no longer creates direct communication, the question arises: what power and what possibilities can the art of words, poetry, still have.”

He explained Valery’s’ metaphor between spoken word, everyday stuff and the poetic word. “The spoken word is like a coin, it had meaning in something that is not fully tangible. The coin of the past “had as well the value which it signified, since the metallic value of the coin equaled its value as a coin…..In poetry, when one is directed away from the word, one is also at the same time directed back to it; it is the word itself which guarantees that about which it speaks.”
After 2 pages and the start of the shadow-text. I have to go back to Marranne Moore.
So, Is the coin of Caesar worth more the its weight in gold? Is the counterfeit? Which made me think of the parable of ‘that which belongs to Caesar’... deftly spinning the coin.

In the second paragraph he writes:
“Must all literature now be Litterature Engagee….Without a doubt, the word of the poet in such a time must be different. It will be related to the reporting, casual nature, and dispassionateness of technical language.. But is the Poetic word thereby truly a reporting? Or can one demonstrate that even today one can still build a lasting image out of words, which is not passé but constant and forever? And which, therefore, still permits the “common spirit” to be expressed in a poem?”

I cast out the net, that you hesitantly weigh down
with stone-written
Shadows”

hello Lady, how are you.
Moved a desk into the study/bedroom. i have desk fetish. Nothing like moving into a desk. I love old film and Phil. and was going to rant a little on Korda. (always called philiosphy courses 'Phil.' I was in a little trifecta at Uni. and what a flurrry of arcane decoupaged funnies we cobbled. Like Flikr in the age of infotrack but power is comedy and thats were it lies in undergrad. My female comrades of course remarked about: male/philiosphy/{ers}/very large percentage of='Phil.') Anyways, at uni, i made the looped vcr/tv with 'Battleship Potemkin' locked in the vcr so that was all you could watch. It was placed in a spare room. I left the channels open, simply turn to channel 3 and you get rabbit ear-era tv. 95% would watch it for ten minutes then leave or turn it off. Sometimes what may be art is not. In the office for the Mag was a couch a desk and two chairs. I hung up a Michael Moore autograph signed TO KARL...M.M. (which is going to Madamejujujive when i find it) from 'Roger and Me' promo days in Flint and a poster of Ludwig. The Nixon meatloaf source awaits.

Pat Nixons Meatloaf.

2 tablespoons butter
1 cup finely chopped onions
2 garlic cloves, minced
3 slices white bead
1 cup milk
2 pounds lean ground beef
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon salt
Ground black pepper, to taste
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon dried marjoram
2 tablespoons tomato puree
2 tablespoons bread crumbs

Grease a 13 x 9-inch baking pan. Melt butter in a sauté pan, add garlic and sauté until just golden - do not brown. Let cool.

Dice bread and soak it in milk.

In a large mixing bowl, mix ground beef by hand with sautéed onions and garlic and bread pieces. Add eggs, salt, pepper, parsley, thyme and marjoram and mix by hand in a circular motion.

Turn this mixture into the prepared baking pan and pat into a loaf shape, leaving at least one inch of space around the edges to allow fat to run off. Brush the top with the tomato puree and sprinkle with bread crumbs. Refrigerate for 1 hour to allow the flavors to penetrate and to firm up the loaf.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Bake meatloaf on lower shelf of oven for 1 hour, or until meat is cooked through. Pour off accumulated fat several times while baking and after meat is fully cooked. Let stand on wire rack for five minutes before slicing.

Makes 6 servings.

tomorrow: Dicks from congressional cookbook 1961 but wait.
first we must contrast this.

'grand dame of the 123/oss' meat loaf

2 cups minced onions
2 tablespoons butter or oil
1 cup pressed-down homemade bread crumbs
2 pounds ground beef chuck
1 pound ground raw turkey plus
1 cup cooked rice (see note)
2 large eggs
1/2 cup beef bouillon
2/3 cup grated Cheddar cheese
2 cloves pureed garlic
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 teaspoons thyme
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon oregano
3 bay leaves
Directions:

Heat oven to 350. Saute the onions in the butter or oil 5 minutes or so, until tender and translucent; raise heat and saute a few minutes longer, until lightly browned. Scrape into a large mixing bowl. Combine all ingredients except the bay leaves in the bowl and mix together thoroughly, using first a wooden spoon and then your hands. Shape the mass into a free-form loaf on a buttered cookie sheet or into a buttered 8-cup loaf pan. Arrange the bay leaves on top. Bake in the lower middle of the oven for about 1-1/2 hours at 350 degrees. The meat loaf is done when the juices run almost clear with a pale pink tinge. A meat thermometer should read 155 degrees. Let cool for 30 minutes and pour off the fat and juices before serving.
Note: This meatloaf also can be made with a pound of ground pork shoulder or sausage instead of ground turkey. In that case, eliminate the cup of cooked rice.

Dicks meatloaf will have to wait. Ms. Clav is analyzing the recipes and inflicting me with meatloaf till x-mas. I was flickering through Martins’ ‘Cinema In Revolution’. The section by Antoloi Golovnya is great. Of the Montage crowd he did not fuss about with the high brow scripting. A real nitrate fella. In 1924 Golovnya joined Kuleshovs’ Cinema technical team under cameraman Levitsky and formed a friendship with Pudovkin ( a visual resemblance to Oliver that is uncanny) . The film was ‘The Death Ray’. This is a real treat, I saw it once about 6 years ago and had not gotten around to torrent search when “the light went dim”. It has all the paranoid compartmentalized jejuna amerika grease paint drama - silver pants and ray gun hilarity. Reflexive for sure. Golovnyas article is ‘Broken Cudgels’. He writes:

“When we talk about teaching young men to make films, it means that we first of all to teach him-if he is a director-not to write scripts. Secondly, if you are a director of a film adapted from a literary work-respect its author…
We teach him also that every work must have social value; that he does not create it for his personal amusement, but for the people; that he has no right to create works that are harmful to society. For instance we are often asked: why don’t we show a film like ‘The Seven Samurai’ in the Soviet Union? Simply because if we did, louts would begin to fight with knives. In short, the method is a series of ‘Hows’-how to study the material, how to treat it, what aims to set, how to organize the work. All this learned by practice of the craft” (Pg. 144)

Thanks to yesster, I have been re-aqiunted with the word processor. it is still a chore. Holy smoke its its easy on the eye no?

Typos galore. I’m glad I typed ‘Michigan’ as like others, it to has many a distinct "dialect?".
Inflections what have you. One model of the 1940s-through the 80s broadcaster was the 'Chicago schoo'l I calls it. It has that nasal flare and that can be modulated with ease into a rather concise “americanese”. Michigan is similar but mimicry is more the subject line. The cables from hell had a frame work. By themselves, if read, they could mean specific things or become a vague referent. Context? To break the “3rd wall”. I will say a trick to ‘clav’ is seeking the positive by negative means an age old technique. The question to myself is not about a screen name or some skit but as to the importance of the negative in relation to the positive out come which as many philosophies teach, is moment to moment. One has to listen to what is being said even if it is resistance and against a set of beliefs. This should be inherent as John Adams farting on his horse, he just lifted his butt a little.

Lady, your arguments in the original FFP that created this thread are still as valid as of that day, one month, what has changed. or what. I want QII to smock on over to my house for foonery. I want to...i want. not much to see as you can surmise. but when i welcome someone into my life i risk rejection...low self esteem i suppose. and when i break with a freind it is of the deepest reason that does not concern the world. your 1984ism, your point is it relevant ? It is not the initial response to intrusion but others that may be ‘dragged’ in and that creates a new playing field. It is akin to confession and all its broad implications. in psycological warfare, the arts 'is' the highest form of assault. this is common knowledge. the trick to that: an invisible skin deflects. wow, super stufy wuffy. The words become wasted and art devolves into factions. like anything like anything, the thinking mans retreat option. The real question is that what I am doing? Or what.

i would like to talk to yesstir about his art. But being “spooky mulder” makes that option about nil. that’s we love Ludwig. but i am an ass loud and shabby and will be in NYC come spring. i have some grace like anyone. confession revels and re-vaels reveals veal.

In a time of economic uncertainty and lowered political expectations….never the less…Young people hunger for morally satisfying careers, for linkage to the oppressed, for lives to have meaning outside the narrow circle of family and friends. And if other opprununities to satisfy their own ambition do not exist, some of them will attempt to create their own linkages through violence. That is why the effective counter-terrorist device yet discovered is popular mobilization for significant change. Domestic terrorism can be averted, in the long run, only when there are mass-based organizations capable of linking the youthful intelligentsia to the people.”

Hmm.

This poem
if we shall call it that,
or concert of one
divided among himself,
this earthward gesture
of the sky-diver, the worms
on his back still spinning forth
and already gnawing away
the silks of his loves, who could have saved him,
this free floating of one
opening his arms into the attitude
of flight, as he obeys the necessity and falls . . .

Sancho Fergus! Don't cry!

Or else, cry.

On the body,
on the blued flesh, when it is
laid out, see if you can find
the one flea which is laughing.
