Ravelry redux November 20, 2010 7:10 AM   Subscribe

Ravelry (http://www.ravelry.com) has been out of closed beta for a while. It also gets a fair amount of love in any fiber-arts-related post on the green or grey. Can we add it to the list of social networks in user profiles?

It looks like the last time this pony came around, ravelry was still in closed beta. It's open to the world, now, and there's a mefi group on the site.

Are their profile pages public now, or do you need to be a member to see them?

I can't view my profile when I'm not logged in and I don't see any option for making it public.

I think you have to be logged in to see nearly all of the content. Are we only linking to more publicly visible social sites?

Hey there,

This might not help rmd1023 since the number is small (sorry!) but we've got MeFi on our (short) list of social networks for profiles and there are 139 people using it.

PS - Profile pages are still members only and they look like ravelry.com/people/username

Casey, had I known you were on MeFi, I wouldn't have gone digging around myself. :) Nice to see you here!

Yeah there needs to be some sort of publicly available profile URL for us to be able to add it to the social sites stuff [even if it's just a smallish thing like facebook does]. If Ravelry doesn't have this, it's not something ready to be added to the list, but keep us posted.

Wait, now I have to post-stalk Casey on MeFi, too?

caseyf -- yep. I'm on there as 'rmd', flaunting my mefi association with pride. :)

jessamyn -- it hadn't immediately occurred to me, but that makes total sense.

So...a young person of my acquaintance enjoys crochet. I'd like to check out the site before I let him join. ....but I can't? It's just a login screen? Who does that anymore?

Who does that anymore?

They're a rather tight-knit community.

HAHA
ha... ha... heh... um... sorry

OK as soon as there are public profiles on Ravelry, I vote for being able to love on Ravelry from my MeFi profile.

Dear Casey: Please get with the program so I can have this pony. Thank you.

For some reason I've really wanted the Ravelry admins and the MeFi mods to be friends. It'd be like when your mom makes friends with your best friend's mom, and it's really cool because you get to see your best friend all the time. Fifteen years later, you find out that the whole time you and your friend were watching She-Ra, your moms were drinking martinis and snickering about your pinworms.

At first I read "jessamyn" as "jess" and thought worlds had already collided.

@DU - when I visit the site, I see a big "join now!" button. Maybe try refreshing the page?

Dear Casey: please get on the ball.

I have exchanged Ravelry profile names with several mefites, but I'm sure I have missed a lot of them. Does anyone have the time to monitor a Ravelry Metafilter group if we start one?

Francesca, do you mean in addition to Metastitcher?
posted by zizzle at 3:05 PM on November 20, 2010

There is a MeFi group in Ravelry.

http://www.ravelry.com/groups/metastitcher

Is that what you have in mind?

Jinx, zizzle!

Ravelry needs an about page. Or something that tells you what it's for.

Also, I think the standard answer to these requests is usually add the site to the mefi wiki and as demand gets there they are added or somesuch.

Great, heading to sign up. Thanks.

Oh ha, I'd forgotten I did this, but look how cute it is!

I would love to be able to add Ravelry to my social networks here, too. Get on it, nerds!

Oh, I'm glad to see we can link ourselves here over there! (I'm raanve over there.)

I'll also join the group. \o/

This is more of what he's looking for, I think: Tour, but you don't see that unless you click sign-up and then notice the 'what is ravelry' link at the top. It is a little odd that it's not linked from the front page anywhere that I can find.

What? We have a Ravelry group? (just ran to add the group)

Ohhh, Ravelry loooooove. Joining in. Y'all didn't all know about Metastitcher? Get all up in there!

Just a reminder: if you have other social networks that you'd like to see on the site you can nominate them at the wiki, here: SocialStuffs. That page includes a list of past suggestions that didn't make it, and a list of the current active services.

I learned how to knit primarily so that I could join ravelry! It's a pretty awesome site! And it's my go-to search for how to knit most things.

Anyway, I need to get back to working on my Alex DeLarge stuffie! Pardon the black suspenders, that was from my first draft (which I promptly destroyed in an embroidery accident).
