I don't know this type of problems seems prettily usual. The English language are flexible about an many things. So, lets extend it's feature list even farther so than it is even more flexible then it had before. If any people do get confuse they can relay on context too make it sense.

posted by russm at 9:46 PM on December 19, 2010

It's all about subject-verb agreement. When you conjugate the verb "to comment," then "1 total comments" makes sense. The problem is that the subject's implicit: "1 (Metafilter user) total comments."

There may also be an issue with the tense (perhaps should be "commented"?), but using the present tense to refer to something prerecorded but still to come is accepted: "Andy Rooney comments on desk chairs, next on 60 minutes."

I've been wondering this for a while...the whole "we've gone a whole day without a MeTa post" thing...how many hours would we have to not have a MeTa post for that statement to be true, no matter where you are and what you set your time zone to? (Please don't say 24; I'll fell dumbs.)

(fyi, the reason why I ask is that I used to be in California, spent several months on the East Coast, now live in England, and I never changed my time zone here on MeFi...so when I notice that 24 hours have gone by on the gray without a post - for my peeps back in SF Bay, hiya yo! - I've often wondered if I, too, could revel in that same reality (but am too challenged to do the maths).)

(Also, I'm posting after midnight, whee!)

iamkimiam: The earliest timezone where there are people is UTC-11, for Samoa and Niue; the latest is UTC+14, for the Line Islands.

So for December 20 -- the day it is in most of the inhabited world -- to be metatalk-free everywhere, there would have to be no posts on metatalk from 10 AM UTC on December 19 (the beginning of December 20 in UTC+14) to 11 AM UTC on December 21 (the end of December 20 in UTC-11).

In other words, 49 hours. (And I already ruined December 20 for some people. But maybe December 21?)

(It "should" be 48, i. e. two full days; the extra hour comes from the time zone peculiarities.)

Each individual with a user name over 20,001 will be issued ONE M-80. When you feel the urge to make a post like this, please insert that M-80 in the appropriate orifice and light the fuse (don't worry, I got the ones with the long fuses, 'cuz some of you are going to have to jam that thing up there a long ways).

Please remember to close your mouth when you light the fuse, otherwise it isn't gonna work, you'll just spew more stupid idiocy and we'll have to mail you another M-80.

I just watched the episode of Star Trek where Data builds himself an android daughter, Lal, and there are so many interesting directions they could have gone with that but it's Star Trek so they didn't and even wrapped the whole thing up with a cheesy deus ex machina to avoid having to confront either the central moral dilemma they did go with or the implications for the show if there was another Data-like android running around (aside from Lore, of course; remember Lore, Season 3?). After a whole episode of diegetic arguments about her rights as a sentient being and blah blah blah, the exegetic response is, just, you know, kill her off without any interesting explanation. New life is precious beyond measure only insofar as it doesn't make things hard for the writers.

But so anyway one of the things they didn't explore in any interesting fashion was Lal's use of contractions; it was this like notable oh-wow how-did-that-happen she-must-be-more-evolved thing and blah blah blah but nary a peep in justification of the absurd idea that for all of Data's super fucking sophisticated natural language skills, he wouldn't be able to figure out contraptions if he damned well pleased? Was Dr. Soong just a twisted son of a bitch who put a literally linguistic kill switch inside of Data? The Forbidden Apostrophe? A dark place where he, linguistically speaking, afraid to look? Was Lal the goddam like Kwisatz Haderach of android speech heuristics?

But more importantly I want to note that the actress who played Lal seems to have studied for the part by watching Star Wars over and over and over again and memorizing all of C-3PO's movements.

I just watched the episode of Star Trek where Data builds himself an android daughter, Lal, and there are so many interesting directions they could have gone with that but it's Star Trek so they didn't...

One of the roads the writers could have gone down (no pun intended) was what to do when Lal inevitably reached a point in her sexual maturity where she wanted to have intercourse with Data. Most societies consider father/daughter incest a taboo, of course, but that is a social construct which came about due to the probability of mentally and physically deficient offspring, presumably not at all an issue where, well, where one can not bring forth issue in the usual way. So, logically, Data and Lal would have no reason not to indulge, but the writers would almost certainly have taken the easy way out and had Data demur because Ryker or Deanna tell him it's a bad idea.

Androids are apparently really susceptible to peer pressure.

1 total comments, but how many product comments? Quotient comments? Difference comments?

Which is to say, DOWN WITH TOTALITARIANISM.

why do we count these things anyway

why don't we count the number of words in a thread

or count the numbers of characters

or count the emoticons used

or count the honest moments of sincere respect between members

why

why don't we ever count what matters?

As Gandhi replied when they asked him what he thought about the Americans on the moon: "I think it would be a good idea".

There is no moon! Can any one of you see such a thing right now? Show me this alleged moon!

The master pointed at the moon.
Artw stared at the master's finger.
Artw was enlightened.

I once convinced a Rabbit to sell a movie and a book too to an Englishman. (Rabbit is shorthand) I did this by convincing the Englishman that his mom loved me (not difficult, mom's love me). He (The Englishman) bargained fecklessly by telling me that my wife loved he and his family. It was feckless because my wife hates pretty much everyone tonight, families especially and me specifically. Though she is an Anglophile and swears there was some conspiracy to kill Lady Di. (sp?) that isn't reason enough for me to commit, even though Cruise and Damon signed.

Are you calling MeFi fat?

No, I'm saying that its lack of attention to detail (this thread) and dismissal of basic usability gives it more of a garage-works feel, rather than a professional one. I've convinced myself that this is intentional and charming.

I'm glad you like the vibe coolguymichael. But to clarify, we fixed the problem mentioned in this thread and we haven't dismissed anything in the other.

In fact, we're discussing that very issue over here and we're very open to suggestion. There are no hard and fast rules about usability that make these choices obvious.
