What's up with the ★?

On some of jessamyn's posts, I'm seeing it say "jessamyn ★" as the author. It seems to be limited to metatalk, but cortex nor matthowie have one. The wiki isn't helpful, but does mention stars. Google acts like it's been there forever, but I don't remember seeing it. Is this some sleep deprivation induced hallucination I'm having, or does someone know whats up with the star?

I can't see the star, just that crappy little box with illegibly tiny numbers in it. I've been through every Unicode choice in Firefox's View: Character Encoding menu, and through every choice in the Tools: Options: Content: Advanced menu; I do have Wingdings installed on the [WinXP] machine. Is it calling some other font, or something....? Please help, I feel so stupid that I can't sort this out!

Fonts that support Unicode Character 'BLACK STAR' (U+2605). I think the main one that most people have installed is Arial Unicode MS, which gets installed if you have Office. I'm pretty sure you can find it for download if you look, or try installing one of the other fonts on that list that are freeware.

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.

I'm not sure that's a vote in its favor. Quidditch treated with appropriate vagueness as to the ruleset would have been just fine—we all know it's a prop for the story anyway, none of the books were titled Harry Potter and the Intercollegiate Tournament Ladder—but the explication in detail of such a stupidly designed game makes it clear that Rowling should not be designing games. Whether that's clear to Rowling I have no idea, but where the rules of an invented game are left vague we can at least have the out of giving the author the benefit of the doubt.

Although languagehat has taught me that every pronunciation is right, the most commonly accepted pronunciation of "vituperative" stresses the second syllable.

The first syllable might have "i" as in "ice" or "i" as in "hit", and the second syllable might have "u" as in "plume" or "u" as in "cube", and the third syllable might be "pear" or "purr", and the fourth syllable might be "a" as in "car" or "call" or "ape", but we all agree the last syllable rhymes with "give", right?

Hell, let's all just use "contumelious" instead. Nobody knows how to pronounce that, so even playing field!

interested to know how you pronounce it, kittyprecious

My IPA's pretty bad now, but [vɪ-'tu-pɹ-ə-,tɪv] or vit-'oop-urr-uh-,tiv in fake-o phonetics.

What seemed weird to me was
(1) They use "ahy" to spell out the long I [aj] sound (which differs from my short-I pronunciation, but no biggie there) and
(2) The italicized fourth syllable, which looked like it signified secondary stress and a schwa, since the alternate spellings didn't match.

Basically, their phonetic "translation" was just really idiosyncratic and unintuitive. I have nothing against alternate pronunciations. But mine is the best.

On an unrelated note, since somehow I have had occasion to share with the Green and Blue today that I have been raped, have had an eating disorder, that I like anal sex but my husband doesn't, and that I have had two abortions, let me share with the Gray the most embarrassing confession of all--

I think the source of this was an atlas that I had that showed a flat projection of the US, with Alaska in an inset on the left (where the Pacific Ocean is) and Hawaii on an inset on the right (where the Atlantic Ocean is). Somehow, that image stayed in my brain and I never compared it to, say, a globe.

Until an American History class my junior year where I expressed bemusement as to why the Japanese had attacked Hawaii instead of California. Hilarity ensued for everyone but me as the depth of my ignorance was revealed.

NOW YOU KNOW ALL. My life, it is an open book. Nothing will embarrass me now, not even photos of that time when I split my pants playing kickball in third grade.

Given that England have just not lost in Australia for the first time in decades, I'm honour-bound to disagree with you. Normally I wouldn't, but rules are rules apparently. One of the vagaries of an unwritten constitution, along with parliamentary convention and enforced tally ho-ing.

There is also a Greasemonkey script, mark contact contributions, that will put a gold star by the name of anyone you have as a contact, 2 gold stars if you're mutual contacts, and 1 silver star if they have you as a contact but you don't have them.

I became a regular "paid by the company like an official employee" employee on 1/1/06 though I'd been helping out on and off for the year previously. mathowie was all like "You should get a sabbatical" and I said "How about a gold star instead?" and here we are.

Anytime I think you guys can't get any more quietly awesome, you do something like this.

Not to diminish the beauty or unique nature of the star, but I'd really love a star on every mod for those convenient times when I just want to flick down a MeTa post and see the mod-response. (Optional, default to off, so that new users still get suckerpunched by ninjamods!)

That's one of the best features of the MeFi Navigator script -- it puts a small tag next to each moderator's name in Metatalk threads. It's not large enough to be really distracting but it's enough that it catches your eye as you scroll if you're in skim mode.
