IRL RSS and mobile January 27, 2011 4:59 AM   Subscribe

IRL: the RSS feed and the mobile site.

RSS: I'm subscribed to the Toronto events. Today I noticed that the RSS feed shows the same fields as the other sites: title and body text. It would be incredibly useful to see the event's date/time and location as well (or even instead of the body text).

Mobile site: I couldn't see how to mark myself as attending without switching to the standard site. It turns out that I can mark myself as attending IF I click on "3 attending, 4 maybe" first. Could we make that more clear?

Android, Google Reader, Dolphin browser, in case that's relevant.

I think it should definitely show the date of the event, or "Proposed" if it's just proposed with no confirmed date yet.

We include the full event details in xCal format within the feed, so all sorts of display nerdery is possible in theory, but if Google Reader chooses not to do anything with that data it doesn't help much. Yeah, we can add the event details to the end of the description and the category to the title. We already have a convention on the site of [category]: [post title], so that should be fine in the feed.

How about adding an explicit link after the attending count for mobile devices? Along the lines of: "3 attending, 4 maybe — are you attending?" if you haven't set a response yet.

"3 attending, 4 maybe — are you attending?"

That would be perfect.

When I go to the feed in my browser (not gReader), http://irl.metafilter.com/go/canada/on/toronto/rss, I see no event information. All I see for the most recent item is this:
MothUP Toronto #9 - Love & Sex
Wednesday, January 26, 2011 11:07 PM
Lusting loins, secret sex tapes, confessions of amour, breakups and makeups are the stuff of our special Valentine's Day edition of the MothUP. This month, it's all about LOVE & SEX. No story is too racy or romantic.

At our last event, Sasshat told an amazing story. Who wants to be next?

SIGNING UP:

Potential storytellers must submit their name, title of story, and a brief piece of introductory information at the start of the event or during the first intermission (for those of you who arrive late or need a little liquid courage before signing up). If you have an amazing (theme-related) story that must be told, email a brief synopsis of your story to mothuptoronto@gmail.com and you may be one of five pre-selected storytellers for the evening.

GUIDELINES:

Stories must be brief! 5-7 minutes
Stories must be TRUE.
Stories must be from personal experience!
Stories must be STORIES. No readings, no props, no notes, no standup!
It is a good idea to have the last line of your story in mind.

For additional questions about the event or for storytelling support, please message either of us directly! For guidelines or inspiration, go to http://www.themoth.org/listen or http://vimeo.com/groups/mothup.

MISCELLANY:

This event is entirely FREE!

The event will be filmed and recorded, so be prepared to sign a waiver granting us rights to the material if you plan to share a story. Videos from MothUP events will be featured on The Moth vimeo site, and stories may be considered for the radio program, The Moth Radio Hour.

The room fills up fast, so get there early to ensure a seat.
What would I have to use to see the xCal information? (Note that the date included there is the post date, not the event date.)

Bring up the feed in your browser and view source (the browser feed viewer won't show this info to you either). You should see this for that event:

This is all set. I added the category to feed titles, the date, time, and venue name to descriptions. Also added "Joining us?" to the mobile site so it's more clear you can click that set your status.

I added the category to feed titles, the date, time, and venue name to descriptions.

I still can't see this and I have no idea why. I've tried subscribing to all IRL events to get a refreshed feed and to see events added since you made this comment, but they all look the way they did before.

This event was posted a few days after you last commented, and it has a firm date and time (i.e. did not get posted to RSS as a 'proposed' event), but I don't see that date and time in the RSS feed.

What am I missing?

Also added "Joining us?" to the mobile site so it's more clear you can click that set your status.

This is lovely, thank you.

I haven't updated the All Events feed, only feeds for locations. That's why you're not seeing it there. The All Events feed is a bit of a firehose as it is, so I'm hesitant to include Proposed events there. But if there's a demand I can add it.

ok, Proposed events, category names, and date/time/venue should be set for all feeds at IRL now.
