Pony Request: Metafilter Video Playlist! February 19, 2011 10:44 AM   Subscribe

Is there a way to get a list of recent linked videos?

Youtube has basically replaced television in my life. This opens up a need that Metafilter nicely fills for curated lists of videos. I don't always have time to check the day's postings for new videos every evening. I'd love it if there was a way to be shown a playlist of recently-posted videos.

More thoughts:

Searching for the SLYT tag works, but leaves out all multi-video posts (like the recent awesome Crooked Still one, for instance), as well as all non-Youtube video links.

As long as I'm wishing for a pony, I'd like it if this list could include all videos referred to in discussions, and not just from original posts. To keep this under control, maybe all videos from discussion posts w/ more than 10 favorites, or some arbitrary number, or a number I could set myself... maybe same thing for FPPs - more than X number of favorites.

We've considered this in the past and even built some prototypes at one point. Ultimately we decided not to do anything with it because we felt it would encourage even more links to YouTube than we already have. We also felt like having special features for a single external source might take something away from posts that didn't include links to YouTube.

That doesn't mean we wouldn't ever do something like this, but that's where our thinking was a year or two ago.

I'm not necessarily seconding the request, but I just commented in the Bjorn thread that I was wishing for a Vimeo animation podcast and a Vimeo curated list would serve a similar purpose. The concern about SLYT and SLV posts is a good reason why this would be a nonstarter, though.

pb:

What if, when someone creates a post with a YouTube or Vimeo hyperlink, MeFi automatically asks the poster if he or she wants to add a "video" tag (if they haven't already). It'd be a nudge to make people tag things more accurately.

Then you can browse that tag to your hearts content.

The "video" tag could be anything really. Also, you could do it for other major video sites, too. Perhaps the ones that can be hooked into our profiles?

This is something we'd be less likely to do only because to start going down that road really pretty much leads to madness. Any sort of "Hey did you want to do ______?" nudging pre-posting other than the basics starts to get onerous really fast.

As much as I enjoy a lot of the YouTube content that gets posted here, I sort of agree with pb that preferencing it over all other sorts of content isn't something that seems really compelling.

I think anything that encourages one tag over another is kind of a non-starter for me personally. We do it at Ask MetaFilter with the 'resolved' tag, and that tag's use is completely off the charts. Any sort of auto-encouragement will pollute the organic nature of the tagging system, I think. And giving special treatment to a particular tag by creating features around it would hurt the system too.

Yeah, but a video file is always a video. That isn't subjective.

I do get jessamyn's point from a usability standpoint, though.

I made a Yahoo Pipes filter for YouTube-linked posts a couple years ago (almost exactly), based on suggestions from AskMe.

I noticed you are about to post a grary comment. Would you also like to make an angry meta post?
