So...why wasn't this deleted as chatfilter?

Not throwing stones-I'm pretty sympathetic to chatfilter-y questions. But it seemed pretty clearly a chatty question, which was pointed out a half dozen times in the thread itself.

Just curious.

From the explanation of "chatfilter" in the FAQ:
- Questions where everyone's answer is equally valid along the lines of "What's your favorite X?". Maybe there is a reason you want to know? Super, just put it in your question.

Well, vacapinta is a part-time mod. It's possible he's been doing his Actual Job and didn't see the flags, and it's possible that not many flags started going up until the East Coast mefites got to work and saw it. It's pretty likely that it isn't staying up because the rules on what's chatfilter suddenly changed.

If the OP had included, "because I want one-book suggestions from everyone here to fill my lonely days", would that have been enough?

Yeah, vacapinta is explicitly Around When He Can Be, not so much On The Clock, so he checks in when he can but he's not glued to the site and some days he may not have a chance to check in at all. Something not deleted at 4am is accordingly not as much of a weird thing as would be something not deleted in the middle of the US workday. It's great that he can nix some stuff, when he can, the overall rate of nighttime weirdness is way down since he started helping out, but there will still be the occasional Thing That Occurs.

Anyway, it was chatty chatty chatfilter, it had a ton of flags, people answered it anyway because chatfilter is chatty and people like to chat, and now I'm awake and my tea is steeping.

So, in summary, the flowchart for the "do I start a metatalk asking why something that would normally be deleted hasn't been deleted?" scenario would have a little diamond box on it that says "is it before, like, 1500 GMT or so?" and the "YES" arrow points to "wait until the mods are awake at least" and points back to the same diamond again and the "NO" arrow points to whatever the next step is.

I kind of want to make a flowchart now.

Glinn: As far as I'm concerned, that would not have saved it. Mostly because "because I want one-book suggestions from everyone here to fill my lonely days" doesn't give enough parameters. One criteria for determining if a question is chatfilter is "are all answers equally correct". When you're dealing with non-realtionships questions, this is a useful criteria. Like all answers to "what's your favorite ice cream?" are equally correct because each person's favorite (even if it's "sherbert" which is not technically ice cream) is, in fact, each person's favorite.

"What's a good book about alternate histories that features a murder?" has fewer correct answers than "What's a good mystery book?" which has fewer correct answers than "What's a good book?" which has fewer answers than "What books do you reread?" Those questions are, in my opinion: Not Chatfilter, Probably Chatfilter, Deleteable Chatfilter, Unquestionably Chatfilter.

But we're all assholes with opinions about what is deletable chatfilter. I try to flag and not care, but sometimes I flag and complain to the person standing next to me. Who (usually) isn't on Metafilter, and really doesn't care.

As far as ice cream, my current favorite is strawberry (and I endorse TV's requirement that it have actual bits of strawberries in it) but it varies over time.

Ben and Jerry's used to have a "Reverse Chocolate Chunk" that I loved—chocolate ice cream with white chocolate chunks—but it's been discontinued. I've tried to recreate it at mix-in type places, but it's not the same.

It's weird to explain but vacapinta's sort of a sometimes-mod. That is, he helps out and checks in a few times but he doesn't have a shift, he's not on payroll and he has a Real Life and Other Job much more than any of us do. So we're thrilled he helps out here but he gets only credit and no blame.

I have a lady in my computer class whose husband works at Ben & Jerry's. She came in to say thank you last week with seven pints of the stuff [Late Night Snack, Cinnamon Bun, Everything but the..., Mint Chip, Chubby Hubby (2) and Oatmeal Chunk). I had to pay the janitor a pint to get the others out of the freezer when work was over. When I bought my house in Vermont it was from the then-B&J's webmaster, in 1997. I know ice cream. And I still miss Cool Britannia.

Shouldn't it be okay for an occasional imperfect question to slip through? The pileon of flagging and questioning about an innocuous chatfilter post seems to edge into "Neener, neener, I'm telling the mods" territory. I don't think that's Chrysostom's intent; I just like the occasional semi-legal question to have half a chance.

Ardiril...that would be an awesome thing to post on MetaChat.
posted by Miko at 9:57 AM on April 11, 2011

Well, it's not so much the innocuousness at issue as it is the textbook chattiness. Borderline stuff gets through now and then, not-really-even-borderline stuff once in a great while, and if people can be relatively cool about that bit of flexibility and circumstance and other people can be relatively cool about the fact that in general chatfilter is gonna get nixed, we're all good.

I don't think "neener neener" really comes into it in general; in some cases it might, sure, but mostly I feel like when someone comes to Metatalk with a "hey, this didn't happen like I expected" question it's just because they actually want to make sure they understand how the site works.

What would be the ideal Metafilter Ice Cream Flavor? Plate of Beans. Not taters?

Pancakes.

This type of conversation is the lamest thing about this site.

Someone posted a simple truth above, verifiable by science (chocolate is the best ice cream flavor). Then a bunch of wishy-washy, sometimes (literally) fruity alternatives are posted and we're all obligated to take them seriously, when we all know they're SICK AND WRONG.

Aw, mefimailing one of us isn't a huge gaffe or anything, it's just suboptimal in a lot of cases because response time is slower (a LOT slower if you try me on a day that I forget to get back to my mefimail) and we end up having to coordinate mod-side if it requires further discussion. Don't feel stupid, feel informed!

Also the best ice cream is Tin Roof Sundae.

I would just like to reiterate that "best" does not necessarily mean "favorite". Escape from New York is my most favorite movie ever, but it's by no means the best movie ever.

(I saw chocolate with bacon last week at Whole Foods and might try it tonight.)

Pancakes with bacon!

So I'm in Amsterdam and I am looking at the breakfest menu at some place around the corner from my hotel which SAID they opened at 9 but REALLY opened at 10 and I see they do dutch pancakes, crispy, big flat fried dough with various fillings. I am unsure in my dutch and alone and meek. I ask the waitress, with her tidy apron and air of harried efficiency, if possibly, if it didn't offend, maybe could I have the pancakes with both apple AND bacon?

"Oh Sure!" she says, but with a dutch accent so more elongated. Off she goes into the kitchen. I am left at my little white table with a pot of coffee and a thimble of juice.

The pancake arrives. I eat it. I then eat only that pancake for breakfast for the next 13 days.

I could spend the rest of my breakfasts eating that pancake.

I thought that Walker Brothers made the best Chicagoland-area pancakes with bacon. I was wrong. Over Easy does.

Granted, if you go to Over Easy, you can't pretend you're in Ordinary People, but if I based all my decisions on pretending to be in that movie, I'd be drownèd.

I know I'm late to the party, but I had to correct y'all. The best ice cream comes from Bent Spoon in Princeton, NJ. They make a lot of good stuff, but vanilla sea salt caramel, lemon mascarpone and Guinness Bailey's are high up on the list.
