Tweet out! April 16, 2011 12:11 PM   Subscribe

MeFi's own Adam Savage ("MOAS") gave us a very cool shout out to his 15 million Twitter followers, saying "Awesome links, excellently moderated discussion. My favorite community of balanced, reasoned debate is www.metafilter.com." And in response to another tweet asking about Reddit, MOAS replied that of course he still reads Reddit, but "for reasonable debate, I far prefer MeFi.".

It's still okay to say awesome here, right? Because that was pretty awesome!

Totally said in the Adam imitating Jamie voice.

I was kind of a slow convert / late adopter of Mythbusters, and it's still a little too noisy for me to watch lots of in a row (I'm sensitive to the bogglebox) but I just love it now. I love when the announcer says that Cary Grant and Tory are doing something. I get a giggle every time.

I have done a little research work on the contemporary reflexive performance of expertise in media as its been influenced by social networking's effects on authenticity and Adam's the posterboy for that analysis, which also deals with Mefi's own John Hodgman and not-mefi's-own-yet-as-far-as-we-know-but-get-on-it-PJ Penn Jillette. "We're What You Call Experts" is the title of the paper I delivered. I can't really figure out how to laud MeFi in the paper, but it's gonna happen eventually.

Anyway, kicking myself for not being an ingratiating fangirl at the meetup we were at together, but maybe again someday.

Not enough to make it out or really able to compete with the cacophony of debris or anything, but still it's still there.

When Adam Savage was the King at the Mermaid Parade at Coney Island I was trying to get to the boardwalk. I went all the way to the Cyclones Stadium. As I pushed through the crowd, there he was, sitting in his, King Car? Getting ready for his part of the parade, I guess.

I got to shake his hand before moving on to my destination.

It was hard and calloused. Like he builds a lot of stuff or something. Go figure.

I'm rambling, but it comes down to this: it's not about the skills, it's about the problem solving.

So true. In '92, I went into the T-shirt business, using some idled equipment that belonged to a friend. He's a real Jack-of-all-trades - welds, drives locomotives, helicopters, etc. He was always at hand when I had an electrical problem, or something, and it was a good thing, as launching a business takes a lot of work, even if everything is working well. He came into the shop one afternon to announce that he was going to go build Kartchner Caverns and would be in Arizona for four months. I said "What'll I do if something breaks?" He stood there, flabbergasted, and sort of just looked at me for about 10 seconds, then said "Fix it."

Best advice anybody ever gave me.

For a second I considered creating a sockpuppet account for this thread with the name unplannedchaos, which I was then planning on using to argue against the best qualities of Adam Savage. It seemed like a fitting joke.

The Scott Adams thread was what made me marvel at Mefi for the umpteenth time, and I was prepared to tweet THAT thread, until I realized that that in and of it self wouldn't serve Mefi as a community as well (given that it had already gotten plenty of notice, I mean I found it on gawker) as me just tweeting how great Mefi was. I didn't need to point to it with a potentially polarizing occurrence (is anything NOT polarizing on the web?).

I was at the end of a nice week with Mrs. MOAS and feeling lots of relaxing vibes and web-love for the green.

I particularly love (and I don't think this has gotten enough attention) the way it was dealt with when it the sockpuppeting was discovered- Scott was given the choice as to how to deal. It's a graceful solution that stands out and above the general din of the web.

Now that we're bandying about the term masterdebater, I should tell a story.

Twice in his life my father woke from sleep with a full blown limerick in his head. The first was in the early 80's and was about an old friend of his, a famous designer. It reveals gory details about that persons sex life and doesn't bear repeating here.

The second limerick does.

One morning, the Master Debater,
Stepped into a rogue elevator.
As the cage started falling,
The Master, appallingly
tried to debate his Creator.

I've been working on a talk I want to give as to how these 5 lines actually encapsulate my fathers entire philosophy of nearly everything. It seems appropriate to write it down here.

Whose example should we choose to learn from, should we choose to show our children and their friends as a stellar example of how to live one's life: MOAS or MOSA's?

This is like the MeFi version of Goofus and Gallant:

MOSA uses a sock puppet to try to boost his celebrity.
MOAS is a celebrity, but only makes a big deal about it when absolutely necessary to keep some idiot from setting his bathroom on fire.

I could hope to be MOQ which has kind of a nice ring to it, but I expect I'll one day be "No! We never heard of him. He was never here! Now stop asking questions about that monster!"

Because really, which do you all think is going to be more likely?

I love MOAS, but I'm also kinda glad my job doesn't require me to stand in front of a fan and hurl shit into it.

My job requires me to stand behind the fan and catch it.

You need to be promoted. You're much better at making than being a catcher.

It's a gift, really. Not that I don't practice a lot, I mean obviously, I do...
