Metafilter shoutout on Treme. Did anybody else catch it?
Metafilter was referenced next to Facebook and Myspace by a character who was bringing up 'internet things'. I can't provide a lot more detail as I tuned in seconds before the reference was made and didn't get all the context.

Sorry. It occurred in the last ten minutes or so, when Delmond Lambreaux is talking to a record company executive asking for more publicity for his newly released jazz album. The exec scoffs at the idea of providing coop money for Boise, Idaho, and Lambreaux suggests that they use "Facebook, Myspace, Metafilter, shit like that." (paraphrasing the last part).

Metafilter was mentioned in dialogue in a scene where a musician is yelling at his manager for not publicizing him (I think). He tells him to put word out on "Facebook, Myspace, the blogosphere, Metafilter..." at which point the manager retorts "Meta-what?"

I was shocked when I heard it. Metafilter is not "popular" to the general public the same way Facebook and Myspace are. Not even close. Someone on the writing staff must be a member or at least a reader.

Yeah I was a bit shocked to hear them mention metafilter and not dig or reddit. There was a pretty long Treme thread before the first season though, bet they found metafilter looking for what the Internet was saying about Treme

I'm not sure how I first learned about MetaFilter, but I remember knowing about it in those dark days before MySpace or Facebook as something that was 'around'.

Keep in mind the second season of Treme takes place in mid-late 2006, I think, back when Metafilter was a sleepy country village and not the bustling Internet metropolis it is today.

BTW, that "Treme Explained" series is terrific, I highly recommend it. As a NOLA outsider, it really deepened my appreciation for the show and the NOLA culture on which it's based.

'Yes, and they would know, sorry.' 'But you simply must have one!' 'No, but it's finals and I do have a line of tuition-paying students with actual reference questions so if you'll excuse me...' 'But you simply must!'), the fact that I had a paper due the next day, and a few other little details, I might have indeed jumped right up and offered.
As it was, I politely said, "I'm so sorry, we're closed. Perhaps Santa Monica is still open?"
And the voice said, "But you simply must be able to help!"
With that, I missed my chance to say, "Only if you mention Metafilter.com by name will I be able to help you."

Hey Now, Meta-who people... I am the music supervisor for Treme, and have been a sometime reader and very sporadic contributor around here for almost ten years. But I had nothing to do with the "shout out.". I read it in the script, and was on set when we shot that scene, and I remember thinking "Metafilter? Really? Sort of obscure, but, ok..." On reflection... the character who says that stuff is supposed to be pretty clued-in to cutting-edge Internet shit, so I don't think it's implausible that he would mention Metafilter. A lot of noise in reviews today saying that the Facebook mention is wrong for the time period, but I don't think so. The scene takes place in December 2006, and Facebook was open at that time. So again, when these writers are creating situations and characters, they do their research. This clued-in guy character was pointing out three examples to Delmond, and it makes sense that he gave them in order of descending popularity: Myspace, Facebook, Metafilter. I don't know for sure, but I would guess they wanted an example of something that Delmond definitely would not have heard of, some Internet-insider jargon. Hence, "Metafilter."

MySpace is still slightly relevant in the music industry. Although SoundCloud is probably taking over very quickly (thank god!), many artists use MySpace to stream album release promos. But damn, MySpace is just so completely fucked; who built this crap? It runs like utter shit. I remember it took me 20 min to get the stream working when OMD came out with their new album.
