The Yelp thread had several people saying there should be an Eat.Metafilter or some delicious equivalent. I actually think it could be good. Genuinely written reviews by MeFis of places they've been and the delectable morsels they've masticated. I know it's a little outside of a Metafiltery type deal in that it would be content people write as opposed to the style of the Blue. Maybe too much of an opening for people to be bloggish? Anyhow I think I'd enjoy.
There's the added bonus of "Yeah, I saw this place on Eat.Me."

I have a shelved project that's related and languishing unused. If people want, it would be easy enough to add in restaurant/city details. That said, it takes more from Livejournal than from Mefi, and it lacks the catchy name.

I like the idea but we really don't want to re-invent the wheel, or Yelp for that matter. There's a great page on the wiki called EatMe that's got an accumulation of food-related AskMes. I know that's not the same, but it's a neat thing in its own right.

It would be super neat if someone decided to curate a blog for mefite foodie nerdery; as a subsite of Metafilter itself I don't see it happening.

How about a place where MeFites can detail trips or exciting things they do in specific locales so that the best vacations/new living situations/travel stops can be had every time?

If not raw-meat-read or pumpkin-orange, I'd recommend a banana-yellow. Although in ten years when the banana blight makes them extinct, we could say it was lemon-yellow or egg-yolk-yellow.

I remember that Matt was totally resistant to the idea of an Ask subsite for Metafilter for literally years. People kept asking him, he was like '...well, yeah, nah...'
Then somebody, I can't remember who, put up an unofficial one that was more than just a click-here-to-install deal, and like a week later (coincidence or not, I have no idea) Ask was launched.
I dunno what I'm doing here other than reminiscing about the good old days, those sultry internet August days, but: Matt leaves a shitload of money on the table all the damned time with the whole 'let's not re-invent the wheel' thing. That is, according to the INDUSTRY, not what you should do with a massive dedicated userbase.
Thing is, I respect him for it. It's the same respect I have for the Deck, as well. No neediness to grow, and grow, and grow and then sell (or go the cliché IPO route or whatever) -- just reach a nice maintainable size, slowly ramp up, monetize without pissing off your userbase, and then instead of flailing out all over the map, just hone down and make the core experience smoother and smarter and faster and better.
Dunno how much of that is deliberate on Mr H's part, but I suspect quite a bit, and that's why many oldfart internet people including myself reckon he's a smart fella.
So: yeah, but nah.

I'm somewhat tempted to agree with smackfu. If we were to try something like this, you have to give some thought on how to structure it, since I've always thought that most review lists end up suffering from (a) massive inconsistency (hmmm, both French Laundry and the McDonalds in Toms River NJ get 4 stars....), (b) argument (food reviews can bring out some really odd and strong emotions in people), and (c) poor culling of outdated data.
I think we could structure something to work around (a), and (c) is something that I think the mefi crowd would actually be good at. (b) is where I'd have the biggest concerns about a mefi effort on this front, because we can very often be a cranky and jaded community.
Myself, if I were to try and set something up for this, I'd probably try and do the same thing we do with the main mefi site: leverage the resources of the web, and have a good mechanism for people to collect and point to existing reviews, menus, etc, for places, with the same caveat as the main site: don't point to your own stuff. But that's just my food for thought.

I already use AskMe (in conjunction with Chowhound, TripAdvisor, UrbanSpoon, eGullet, and people I know in person) to suss out where to eat and do other stuff out of town--has worked brilliantly in Spain, the Caribbean, Canada, and all over the US. Most of what you want is in there, you just have to dig around via tags and search. And when it's not, just post a question.

I still think there's traction here, it's just a question of how to make it useful. I've never given up my wistful love for TravelFilter and would like to find ways to make geographical info contributed by MeFites easily usable across a couple formats for purposes like this, as well as others.
I've also been trying to think of a way to do this in MeFi Mag. I would love to see a department of the Magazine that's like a page of local knowledge info dropped by a MeFite who lives in a given location. It would be structured somewhat like those NYT pieces "36 Hours In..." but might be more focused on one day, and would include that MeFite's picks for meals and snacks as well as sightseeing, pastimes, and unique things to do.
Have I written this as a proposal? Not yet. I'm still not sure it's a viable idea. But I think it would be awesome. "Jessamyn Takes Vermont." "ColdChef Undertakes New Orleans." "Flapjax's Toyko Jam." Something like that.
It's a guidebook style I personally would buy if it were for sale.

I like this idea. And I like the idea of integrating ask.me stuff, new and old, even the occasional post from the blue. I like it a lot. But I also want a BookFilter. And TravelFilter. And images in everything, after bringing on an image mod, who just did the images. But what I really need from MetaFilter is probably a different thing entirely.
Also, Miko's suggestion about adding this to the magazine makes good sense to me. How about a featured Ask.Me from the archive? Or maybe ask someone to expand on a question or a comment? Some way to link the print and the site.

As an aside there is a meatfilter.com. I know this because I often type it incorrectly. It's a link to an amazon store with cookbooks and I always wonder how much the guy makes. Mostly because I'd love that URL, but I bet he makes enough to never let is expire.

The thing about yelp is that it has a broad review base but of super-questionable quality and veracity. Here we could probably maintain quality very well, but I think the coverage might be spotty outside of like New York, Chicago, Toronto, the Bay Area and Portland.
All of the metadata you would want to have on reviewed restaurants would be a big old pain in the ass to keep clean, and God help the mods if the thing ever got really popullar because we would end up with the same mob of shills and axe-grinders that infest yelp.
Personally I like the idea of a recipe subsite or wiki a lot more than restaurant reviews, because I bet the quality would be really high and it would be considerably less admin overhead and tsuris to maintain.
