I think we should coddle cuddlers and cuddle coddlers. Coddling cobblers is also good, so they will fix our shoes. Cuddling cuttlefish sounds like a good idea, with all those arms, but, as it turns out, cuttlefish don't like cuddling, so we should coddle them instead (possibly in either sense of the word, depending on your dietary habits, but don't expect the cuttlefish to enjoy it then). Coddling cobblestones is just silly, and don't you pretend that it isn't.

Well, according to the OED, Moll or Molly has been slang for a lower class woman, especially a prostitute since at least the early 1500s. It possibly derived from a pet form of Mary (whether this was just a common pseudonym or from Mary Magdalene seems to be rank conjecture). Molly as slang for gay and/or effeminate men seems to have arisen at the same time, possibly by association with male prostitutes or effeminacy.

"Mollycoddling" seems to be coddling mollies in the sense of women rather than prostitutes. (For what it is worth, "coddling" seems to come from the medieval Latin "caldellum," meaning a hot drink, which would definitely be coddling on a cold day.) A "mollycoddle," on the other hand, is an effeminate man (i.e. one who must be coddled) and then, via the obvious and tired route, applied to gay men. Why it is effeminate for men to be given hot drinks, I don't know, but this may explain some of the opposition to coffee shops and tea houses found on the Right.

My (American) boyfriend and I went to a fishmonger in London when I was there visiting him. He went up to the guy and asked, "do you have any cod?" The guy said, "you want my cod?" My boyfriend said, "oh great, yeah, I'd like about a half kilo of cod please." The guy gave us this really weird look like we were insane, rummaged for a moment under the counter, and stood up with a stack of business cards in his hand. "I can give you two or three, mate, but I don't know why you want so many."

Because over here it's cahd. And over there it's cohd.

The saddest part of the story is that once we got the confusion cleared up, we found out they were out of cod. We did get his card, though, so maybe we'll try again some day.

I'm completely against codpieces. At the very least, it's false advertising, and there are rules about that stuff in other areas of commerce. Why the hell should human sexual relationships be exempt from the sort of consumer protection we've grown to expect in the other areas of our life?

Wait...

You said coddling?

Codpieces encrusted with dling are even worse than plain codpieces and should *definitely* be regulated. People see men walking through the streets of Mayfair and Kensington, their codpieces all decorated in shiny gilt and marquisite, and they think that these fake dandies actually have the wherewithall to cover their crotch in gold and diamonds. By the time they find out all the dling dling is actually fake, it's too late and you've given some foul, pox-riddled molly full and unfettered access to the family jewels.

The next thing you know, not only have you permanently damaged the prospects of all of the future male issue in your branch of the family, but you've actually played havoc with years of investment in the finest bloodline of Gloucester Old Spot this side of Bristol.

Don't talk to me about shiny codpieces...

I mean I know the whole Snow Bed thing is just a stoned dream leaden with anvil-sized dramatic ironies to be mercilessly reversed and we're at exactly the point in the season when it always looks like there are too many plot threads and characters until we get to the second to last and everything somehow magically and masterfully gets tied together but at this point I really would like to see a major character die. Although I do like that there is an actual, realistic threat to the Vampires, Maryanne was only into humans, The Authority stuff was on a more personal level, and seriously, the Church Of The Sun didn't stand a chance.

Speaking of WHICH, they keep talking about Newlin's disappearance in the background and they did make a point of having the familiar Pop Cap game sound "The Zombies Are Coming" sooooooo....

And on a side note, poor Jessica! Everything went wrong in the worst possible way! And like with President Rosyln I don't care with Pam gets Shot In The Cancer, she just needs to be fancy again.
