Here are the main attributes of the average mefite. S/he:
- likes pancakes for breakfast, a plate of beans for lunch, and waiting on the answer to whether something is still edible or not before dinner.
- has a lot of deeply held but internally inconsistent opinions about most important issues, but particularly religion, gender relations, the dominance of American culture and politics, and the Israel/Palestine situation.
- likes aesthetically pleasing photos, but not if they are embedded within a complex, lengthy flash interface.
- loves your favorite band but still thinks it sucks.
- needs to DTMFA and get into therapy, immediately.

I think the Long Tail is an actual neighborhood along the Cambridge-Somerville line. We looked at a few apartments there.

I'm going to take a shot at this... the average metafilter member is male, overweight, in his late 20's. He lives in or very near a major city, on the west or east coast of the United States. He spends about 5 hours a day looking a a computer monitor. He has a college degree and is currently employed, though he's not making as much as he thinks he should. He wears glasses. He has spent many hours of his life playing videogames. He watches The Daily Show and Mythbusters. He is in a serious relationship, but he's not married. He rents rather than owns his own home. See, this is brilliant, because almost no one is going to fit this exactly, but it's so normal that everyone's going to be able to find enough similarities to themselves that they'll be like, "Hey, this kind of sounds like me!" People are good at finding themselves in any description, which is why horoscopes seem genuine. Once you start looking at it through the "this is me" prism, you even forgive the details that don't fit; for instance, I am a vegetarian, but just the fact that the word "vegetarian" appears here gives me a sense of: "OK, not quite ... but at least vegetarianism was mentioned!" (The pepperoni pizza line already shows he's not a vegetarian, but explicitly saying, "He is not a vegetarian" hints that maybe he tried it in the past or would like to go vegetarian in the future -- so he's not that far from me.) Other details that might sound precise are actually so vague they could actually refer to a ridiculous number of people, e.g. "He does not attend church regularly." Juan Apagato spends a lot of time wandering around town. He tried college for a while, but it consumed too much time. So now he's looking for a job that doesn't involve much work. He rents a room in a large house and rarely sees the people he lives with. One is called Frank something, and he thinks there are some more but he can't be sure. There is no such thing as a single favorite pizza topping. A combination of pepperoni, bacon, sweet onions, green peppers, roma tomatoes and pineapple makes my favorite pizza, and you can hold the mushrooms for the rest of your life.
