Ghost in the machine - bad moderating November 12, 2011 12:59 PM   Subscribe

Ninja Editing / Deleting by Moderators - how's about we see a bit of smoke?

I understand that posts can be moderated. I understand that they can be deleted. What I do not understand is that they can be vanished Guatemala Bay style, without a note on the offending post [e.g. "Text has been removed for X reason - signed mod] or a note to the account who made them [PM: Yeah, that wasn't cool, I had to remove it - signed Mod X].

So we're left looking at a void where there was a post, and wondering... did I imagine posting that, and am I taking acid that all these responses are to something that never existed?

Hints: A moderator can edit a post - so why delete when you can prune?

Why the ninja magic?

I'd like a reason for the ghost like editing, I really would - especially when the post in question does not break any rules.

This thread
: way to go moderator.

Hint: all answers were very pertinent to cat ownership and having children interact with them.

What I do not understand is that they can be vanished Guatemala Bay style,

Two thoughts.

1. I believe you mean Guantanamo Bay;

2. If this is true, and you do mean to suggest that mods deleting a comment about cat ownership is even remotely analogous to being detained in conditions that violate the Geneva Conventions, I think you may need a refresher course in a little thing called "perspective."

Or, Cortex - get some balls.

You're well able to prune a post, rather than deleting.

Especially irritated that a post that wasn't an argument, but ended with "Disclosure: have two dogs, one cat and sixteen horses. Rural location" got pruned - and the reasons for teaching good animal ownership are to do with empathy.

And no - of course I meant Guatemala... it was a pun/ joke on sloppy green muck that is sold, and a reference to the prison camp. i.e. If I did a Godwin, I'd have used the right name.

Man, you peeps are heavy.

Because we have a long-standing site policy of not editing people's comments or posts for content. I'm pretty sure that this is a question you have asked before; it is certainly one we've discussed many times in Metatalk in the past.

You do not have to like this policy, but you do need to deal with the fact that it is the policy and that it is not changed.

So we're left looking at a void where there was a post, and wondering... did I imagine posting that, and am I taking acid that all these responses are to something that never existed?

You are welcome to drop us a line to inquire if you are confused about a missing comment or unsure of whether it was deleted or was a hallucination on your part.

You know, fuck it. I've tried really hard to help you figure out how to make it work here, and it is not paying off. Go elsewhere.
